I cannot imagine the hardships that those poor American boys went through, the constant terror, never knowing when danger could come, the heat and the hostility of their own people when returning home. I remember a woman I met in Vietnam, I complimented her on her excellent English, she told me she had been married to a GI who promised to take her to America but he was killed in the Mekong Delta,. I remember sitting on a bus and passing through the old DMZ and seeing cemetery after cemetery all with communist emblems over the gates, each one full of the graves of young men, many little more than boys who were never even given a chance to live, young men and women cut down in their prime. So much misery and grief all around, so many wasted lives, American, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, ANZAC, only time will heal the scars. Though my country stayed out of Vietnam and I know no one who fought in that war I give our American cousins my respect. My own father is dead now,(He died in 1998) he fought in Normandy in WW2, I remember he never talked about the war, most vets don't , they just want to forget, not wanting to be reminded of that terrible times in their lives. Yet I can still see my father with tears in his eyes when he watched on TV as the queen placed a wreath of poppies on the Cenotaph (Memorial) in London. 50 years on and the sight of the Queen laying the wreath still brought tears to his eyes, somethings a person never forgets, no matter how hard he tries. I believe all veterans are deserving of respect, whether they fought in WW2, Vietnam or the Gulf, for people like me who has never been to war we cannot even begin to imagine what the vets went through and with many of them are still going though, the dreams and nightmares that will torment them for the rest of their lives.

The Vietnam war was a horrible political struggle for power. My dad was in his early 20’s, newly wed to my mother, pregnant with me, and very wary of both Vietnamese soldiers and the U.S. soldiers. Their future wasn’t bright, and my Dad planned a boat escape for my pregnant mother, his brothers and sisters, in the dead of night. A vietcong soldier saw them leave the shore and took shots. Fortunately they were far enough to escape the gunfire, but my Dad with his adrenaline pumping noticed minutes later that his white shirt is now a hue of red, realised he wasn’t unscathed. He was hit on a non-vital part of his neck, but bandaged up and pushed on. A long and treacherous ride to a western country, looking for political asylum, they managed to find Australia. That war was unfair on Vietnamese civilians, who were between two factions, both willing to kill them. This is a mere summary, but was the reality for many caught in an unwanted and unnecessary war. Politics doesn’t care to resolve their bloodlust, and will continue to fight wars should money and power remain an asset to sacrifice innocent lives for. We are pawns to the rich and those in power of our nations, and the cycle has repeated and will continue to repeat into an unforseeable future. War is not glamorous or romantic, and it’s sad that nations continue to fight, killing innocents to this day.
My best friend was a Vietnam Aussie vet. He died of bowel cancer. He lived with me and my kids. I was old enough to be he youngest kid born in 83. He watched me struggle as a single mother, get married, have another two children(we didn’t think you’d make it for both of them but you did!) You died in our family house. It was FULL house with hospice. But we’d all play great bloody music. Here’s to you bro/ poppy! Best house go mate ever! You’re granddaughters are so proud of you and think of you everyday. I was drafted in 1967. Had to report one week after my 20th birthday. Hoped I wouldn't be sent to VN, but of course that's where most draftees ended up. I served in the 101st.....It was a surreal experience, you hardly ever say the NVA or VC. I was lucky in that we were around some heavy action, but were not involve in any major, prolonged fighting, it was just the luck of the draw. Making 'contact' was always the mission. I was a scared immature kid. I look back and now wish I'd been more gung ho, but at the time staying alive was our biggest goal. It was a weird time....Arm Forces radio play all the hits from back home, so my mind was on San Francisco and Height Asbury, but I was stuck in VN. I don't think about it very much, more now that I'm older, it was terrifying, but something I'm glad I went through. Over there, we were all brothers, Black, white, whatever. We hung out together, and we took care of each other. Sad to see what's happening in this country now.
Well, to be fair, the uploader kinda swayed possible discussions when he put "Vietnam War" in the title and offered Nam' footage in the video. Nothing wrong with that, but it will utimately make the video easier to reach for people more interested in the song as part of the pop culture sorrounding Nam than on the piece of work itself. The official Rolling Stones video lacks any references to the conflict and discussion topics are way more varied as a result.

@Christopher Bateman Ya don't win wars by winning battles, ya win by breaking the enemies' will to fight. And Hanoi beat you by breaking your country's will to fight. Especially by sending most of the US army in stretchers. Case-in-point, the Vietnamese war was a Pyrrhic victory, in that while they may have won conventional engagements, they were losing troops, money, support from the South Vietnamese and American public at large and material. Bottom line, ya took quite a licking.

10:1 kill death ratio but if you want to call that a win that's ok with me. The US got tired of the massacre and didn't have the stomach to watch it on the evening news any longer.

When I hear this I imagine a soldier running with his M16 by the handle running towards his friends, he holds his helmet tight in his head. He runs and jumps into a small trench and starts to fire, he sees his friends dieing. That feeling of sadness fills him. Then he is full of anger, he rushes to his friends to save them. He yells and fires at opposing forces. He doesn't sense danger, he only sees his fellow soldiers and the enemy. Everything else is black. He gets to his brothers of war and puts one over his shoulders and runs back. He does this over and over until they're all safe. When a Huey arrives for extraction he helps his friends and gets in the M60 and fires non stop until the enemy is dead. After this everything he sees is black. There's no color in him anymore. Just black.

Magnificent footage. I had never thought there would be so much of it about the war in Vietnam. And so different-from the video of bombings to the fall of South Vietnam.
I never went to Vietnam. I was stationed in Dover Delaware in the Air Force. During the early 70's when the US was with drawing. A senseless war lost. Tens of thousands dead on both sides. South Vietnam fell to communism in spite of everything. Will the world ever live in peace? I wasn't a good soldier. I rebelled against the war when I began seeing soldiers come back from that place and what it had done to so many young men all for nothing. That was when I was in basic training. Still, I got an honorable discharge. With certain conditions. Those days were at a time when I was one among many that rebelled. Hope the world will learn to live in peace one. Will be a long time coming and as long as there is money to made from war peace will not come.
The US were not beaten militarily in Vietnam and actually got the Vietcong to surrender. The problem was that the democrats made a political play and they pulled similar to the US leaving Afghanistan.
@@bighands69 Eh, if an army is withdrawing it means they lost the war. The problem was, the US army faced an enemy who was better equipped logistically.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. I'm too young to have lived through it, but I once met a US Vietnam War veteran while travelling through Vietnam. He was a kind but broken man who had spent many, many years since the war ended as an alcoholic. He was there to visit a village near the DMZ he had been stationed at during the war to make amends for the unspeakable things he and his platoon did to the innocent people there. I spent about a week with him and I visited the village with him, where he was welcomed with open arms and all was forgiven. The experience really touched my heart and will be with me forever. From what I learned I can quite safely say that you experienced the war as a nightmare because it was a nightmare. I hope you came through better than my veteran friend. All the best.

People these days will complain about anything, just think of people born in the early 1900’s a pandemic way worse than the one we are going throw multiple wars that people as young as 15 would fight in! People these days need to get a grip and understand how grateful they are.
"Sarge! We're under fire. Im going to do it! I'm going to say the N word!!" "No private! Don't! I have a family!!" *me picking up the field radio* "Napalm on our position now!!"
My dad's grand father was in WW2, he was in the Pacific theater and was taken as a pow, he hid a camera and I haven't seen any of the photos but it was probably horrible knowing what the Japanese did to the Americans in POW camps. After that he was never the same, if kids were on his lawn he would make them work till sunset, and when parents would complain and he would beat them, I'm assuming he was never arrested because the cops were to afraid of him. Another person in my family who fought in WW2 was my great great uncle, he was a paratrooper and helped clear the beach before d day, after WW2 when America got involved in Korea he enlisted again to fight, then in the Vietnam War he didn't fight but he was an advisor with what would later become the CIA helping plan strategies in Vietnam. He was in so many conflicts because he liked killing people, he was often bored after wars and referred to it as "when peace broke out". These are all examples of how war changes people and it's important to honor those who serve.
I come here everynow and then. It's always a shock to see the newer comments and note I have to scroll far, far down to see my last comment. Imagine on those who see only pictures. No smell of sweat, Hops gun oil, camo paint, JP4, cigaretts, the stink of a tropical country. This is the best video of Paint It Black but that's my opinion. Different world now but still the same ole-same ole, yet I feel the pilot-light of my youth here. I felt the joy of being a young, healthy male despite the place. It was so vivid.
When you're Vietnamese and you connect with the footage on a strange levels, seeing your countries torn apart and modern Americans and Vietnamese finding these footage cool on top of an epic song.

They were in it for the long haul. In my view, China is taking on the mighty U.S.A. with the same strategy, the long haul. We can thank Nixon which started that progression by visiting and embracing China as a needed diversion from his Watergate investigation. At the time that visit to China was extraordinary and was so welcomed and captivating. Like landing on the moon. It led to investments in China with what we have now at Wally World... nearly everything Made in China, including computer chips for cars which cost us dearly from lack of computer chips for cars. Nearly everything made, and controlled, in China. Hardly anything that made America truly great beginning with the Industrial Revolution. Lets move on from China and now return to Vietnam...

Simply amazing song and incredible footage . I was born just as this war ended . God Bless every last one of our service men and women !
And the Vietnamese people
I was born in ‘65. I remember the last years of the war in the early ‘70s - the news reports always mentioned Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
95% comments are jokes and no comments are talking about what the message this song tells us .

Just black.

In those days I was just over 20, I experienced this war like a nightmare. But the songs were beautiful
