  • The Normandy Landings (also known as D-DAY) happened 80 years ago today in which our Navy played a significant role.
In addition to transporting troops and vehicles, we also deployed warships to support the invasion force.
During the night of June 6, 1944, our minesweepers cleared the approaches to all five allied landing areas. As the landing craft assaults (LCAs) and landing craft mechanized (LCMs) approached their targets, Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Royal Navy (RN) ships shelled the German defensive positions along the coast of Normandy.
As the landings progressed, the RCN and RN escorted ships carried additional troops and equipment to the Normandy beachhead. During the first day of operations, LCAs and LCMs of the RCN and RN had landed 176,000 troops and their equipment on the coast of Normandy.
We contributed 110 ships and 10,000 sailors in support of the landings. On D-Day, Canadians suffered 1074 casualties, including 359 killed.
