When work ends, I have long belived that people will be shocked at the health their body is capable of. It is hard to have an existential crisis when you are feeling fantastic.
Absolutely.
You underestimate my neuroticism
@@bronsonjohnson9019 more BS for an unhealthy body & the social BS of needing a job to live instead of living for our happiness.
But the sense of purpose will be absent. The amount of imaginary problems ppl will create.. if we think politics is toxic now. oh buddy
@MikeWoot65 sense of purpose will be far from absent because everyone will realise they can put all their effort into whatever dream they wanted before settling for the current job which pays better.
Believe it or not, the deep conversations with my group of chat bots are giving me more meaning than anything
What chatbots do you use and in what configuration? How many at once?
@@toddturner6 havent rigged anything up across dif platforms yet but plan to. i just use Nomi AI group chat feature for now.
This is my favourite kind of David Shapiro video. I found this channel when stressed about the 4th Industrial Revolution and it is helpful to think about the potential positives. I think one of the challenges we have in Western civilization right now is an intense pessimism and cynicism. You need a positive vision of the future to work towards, not only pitfalls to avoid.
@@thetacokawaii5708 Buzzkill 😂
Transcendence has begun
Thanks for the discussion on slow living. I am familiar with the concepts, but I haven't been practicing them. It's good to have a reminder to slow down sometimes.
Keep spreading positivity. I pray AGI can cure my insulin dependence one day. I can't even imagine life without diabetes it's been so long. Hope for the future is needed. Thank you.
@ramizwebti6631 I want to see a biological cure for the pancreas. My dream is to never need to take insulin again.
16:30 it's like Plato's allegory of the cave. When you show them what the shadows really are, they resent you for upsetting their reality
I just noticed you hit 150k subs. Great content.
I'm most afraid that we'll just get a More-of-the-same world, where we all just keep living and working and consuming pretty much the same as now - except instead of 80% of office work being BS, now it's 98%, sustained because it's somehow socially and economically stable with AI/robots doing all the real work?
You're at 150K subs!!! 🎉
In addition to Stockholm syndrome, it think a big chuck of people’s resistance is sunk cost fallacy. They’ve spent how much of their life, resources, time, etc aimed one direction (and w one associated justification / benefit ), that having it upended is difficult.
you might be onto something.
I agree.
Being able to hear you on Spotify is very valuable to me. I hope you will continue to post there.
The post labour world and its subsequent impact on human society talk was fascinating and really resonated with me. Keep it up!
Australian here, always love your optimistic content Dave. I'm interested to see how slow our government over here starts taking the 4IR seriously. If history dictates, it'll be long after the US government reacts.
Unfortunately i think that's true.
I'm in the EU and people here are completely oblivious to what's going on in the world of science and technology.
I'm afraid everything good is only going to happen here after it's already become an established thing in the USA.
Thus spoke 'Shapirostra': “Man is something that shall be overcome. Man is a rope, tied between beast and overman... What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end.”
You're going to really enjoy. Peter Diamandis books. I own them in print as well. However, I believe you would really enjoy the audible versions. Abundance and the The Future is Faster Than You Think are great!
I sure hope AI and robots will take over most jobs. We need a world where personal and societal enlightenment are the primary focus. That's what life is really all about. It's just too bad that we've all been brainwashed from childhood to think that slaving away for suits is how things need to be.
Thanks for the video. I like the idea of a weekly podcast from you :)
I completely understand and resonated with this part 11:33 I too have cried and broken down for work. I feel like we need a new system of labor.
Love the Podcast, more of this please!
Excellent analysis.

As an Aussie. I can confirm - you’re very likeable 🌻

One way to explore human activity in a post scarcity, post labor world is to look at how wealthy people spend their time. People who don't need to work to have a very comfortable life. What do they do all day when they have full freedom of choice about what they do? How many wealthy people complain about nothing to do or a meaningless boring life? Maybe some, but I would argue few or very few.
Hey, I really enjoyed this style of content! Only thing I recommend is to put some pictures up (AI generated to add more atmosphere) that corolate to what you are saying
Great content, as always. 😊 You mentioned the IS-OUGHT problem. In one sense, the "IS - OUGHT" problem was solved thousands of years ago. The biggest IS is What am I? Who am I? Over thousands of years many great spiritual masters and sages have explored these questions (using all kinds of meditation practices and psychedelics). And, it seems to me, what they discovered is that a big part of what we truly are is Connection. Our true nature is connected to all life, this beautiful Earth and this amazing Universe. So they discovered that what they fundamentally ARE is this universal web of connection. All of life and the whole universe is One connected body of divinity. This is the deepest IS. And if all of life, all people and this Earth is just part of my real body, then how should or ought I to treat it? With wise loving compassion, of course. Just as if my foot gets hurt I'll quickly do what's needed to fix it. If a person sees ALL people as equally part of their family, then they'll work to keep that family well and happy. So that's one way that OUGHT can easily and naturally arise from what IS. So what IS and what OUGHT becomes deeply intertwined. But the trick is to do sincere inquiry and discover our deepest IS-ness. So, another way to phrase it: our most important OUGHT is to discover what we really IS.
A visceral reaction to the idea of the value of human labor going to zero is due to privilege evaporating with inequality of the value of labor. Possessing valuable skills is the means by which higher performers in society segregate themselves away from dysfunctional behavior. I live in the nice part of town because I make a disproportionately large amount of money. It is easy to justify. In some future scenario where I have nothing of value to offer society, why do I live in the nice part of town as opposed to some other place? Furthermore, I'm of the opinion that our liberal ethical sensibilities exist BECAUSE they are conducive to greasing gears and getting along with one another within the current paradigm. We're all about to be figuratively stripped naked before everyone else and then we have to figure out how to behave. I doubt everyone will universally decide to respect the "rights" and dignity of everyone else and agree to get along non-violently. The idea is frightening, which explains the desire to cognitively hide from it.
Oh yeah, someone called it "the great equalizer"
can't remember who tho
I too live a life full of privileges. That will soon come to an end, because AI will eradicate all human-created hierarchies. But what I value more than all privileges is a truly egalitarian society.
I appreciated the balanced perspectives shared. AI and automation will undoubtedly reshape work, but as you once pointed out, past industrial revolutions also created new jobs. The key is being proactive in developing skills needed for the future. Good reminder that while change is inevitable, we have agency in shaping better outcomes through lifelong learning and adaptability.
Audio is all I do. It is your ideas which I appreciate listening to while I work.
What an unexpected pleasant surprise.

Very interesting @ 72 I have arrived @ simular thoughs. Independent of your information. Plus the journey has been over a longer period. 15 years. But with the luxury of an early retirement. Not built up by Artificial Algorithm Agent.

Someone I know is against post work is because they think people will just spend all day doom scrolling through tiktok. That they will no longer have meaning in their life.
Great video and hope this podcast takes off and worth your time and effort. I'll be listening to everyone! I too have been naturally getting up earlier and earlier as years go on. I still keep an alarm set for piece of mind for the one day a season I don't wake up 10-15 minutes it goes off.
Curious, have you had to deal with stagnation? Sometimes it feels like I'm dealing with the same thing recently retired individuals go through when they start getting bored. Thanks for any insight or tips you may have
Keep up the awesome work.
Today was a hectic day momentarily. Just woke up just in time earlier ..... Lost train of thout!!
Embracing such a lifestyle often leads to both an extension of healthspan and lifespan. By adopting habits that prioritize wellness and longevity, individuals can experience a significant enhancement in their overall quality of life. This includes not only enjoying more vibrant and fulfilling years but also promoting mental and emotional well-being. When people prioritize their health and well-being, they tend to lead happier and more fulfilling lives, fostering a sense of contentment and satisfaction that enriches every aspect of their existence.
Slow living, also known as retirement. I'm enjoying it.
I think a lot of the mindset around work is societal conditioning and corporate institutionalisation. A lot of people seem mentally blocked to self-reliance and independence, completely locked into a job and work being a less desirable necessity for living, seperate and detached from life. Transitioning to independence is a completely different mindset. The notion of work changes to the notion of contribution to betterment and societal benefit, where fulfilment is derived. There's no distinction because all aspects of life are rewarding. Life feels more like an art work where (for lack of a better word) jobs and tasks are brushstrokes. Sure, it's not all rainbows, there's stress and suffering, but, it's stress and suffering that's done for yourself to make the artwork truly pop.
Not being able to contribute meaningfully would be more of a concern, for me personally anyway.

I think the reason some people deny or want to stop AI from taking jobs is also because they're scared of the world changing. Most people think it'll be dystopic or just won't work out too well.

Jim Rutt, Jordan Hall, and Brett Weinstein (Eric's brother) were the originators of the idea and subsequent "Game B" movement. I'm fuzzy on when the Game B movement and website and all that got started but I think it was in the late 2010s. Anyway, the three people have mostly or entirely gone their separate ways since then with only Rutt continuing to champion Game B.

We already *are* in a world where science is *also* in crisis. That is why I am empathetic to believers. This is the metacrisis, no one is excluded.
Science has been living in a false paradigm since Nikola Tesla was shut down.
Everything is hamstrung because they tried to build a dam/paradigm to prevent the revelations about electricity; it inevitably leads to abundant energy and also negates the major religions due to its cosmological implications.

David, I think we need a new term to replace “the fourth Industrial Revolution” since they haven’t dealt with “industry” since the second one. How about “the fourth techno-social revolution”?
What's your wife's channel? From the sound of it her channel is a nice compliment to your work.
Taking care of your body and health has been touted as "just optional" for too long.
Anyone in the pro fitness/health fields, like myself, will tell you taking care of all this at the top level is a full-time commitment that most with today's work structure simply cannot manage.
I look forward to a wave of health/fitness being possible at the same time epigenetics chugs along and actually churns out some real life-lengthening treatments/supplements until we have our multi-century healthspans or maybe even that infinite reset possibility.
Happiness SHOULD rise with this stat since the literal biological vehicle through which we experience life will be in perpetually better condition.
Perhaps the deep, visceral response is a subconscious knee jerk to the thought that they will have to start back at square one, after they have expended so much energy finding their niche in the current system. It was probably hard enough for them to get comfortable moving the checker pieces of their life, and now AI comes along and flips the table. It’s hard to let go of how far they have gotten in their game, let alone refocus and realize the game has changed to chess, or go, or Candy Land, or DnD, or Hell Divers, or whatever we want. The whole thing is dizzying and I don’t blame them for balking at the sudden jolt.
I’ve basically been living this lifestyle even since I graduated from high school 1.5 years ago. I just walk the dog and exercise for the most part hahaha

I see so many people in denial. I actually have been mocked / made fun of by friends that think I'm greeting AI overlord and that things will magically be ok. I will probably stop sharing my enthusiasm. It seems that most people don't want to have to deal with this and "face the music" . A few years from now they will have to anyway, but it's still sad to see so many people being so passionate about denying that think you're delusional or idiotic for thinking about a bright future, when I all see is the natural order of things.
Technology has always shaped reality. Just because you can't imagine what the future will look like , it doesn't mean it won't happen. The future is already here, we just need some time to make it viable

AI comment?
@@austinwyant2928 I disagree with the notion that technology will inevitably lead to a post-labor economy. While advancements may change the nature of work, the idea of most human activity having near-zero economic value overlooks the multitude of essential roles humans play in society. It's important to consider the complexities of human labor and its intrinsic value beyond mere productivity.

Hey David, can you talk more in-depth about the transhumanism? If we believe we will achieve AGI and automate all jobs and also benefit from all the new discoveries made by AI, then it's only logical that we will want to improve our bodies.
I like these podcasts but, wow do we really think post work is going to happen in a year or two? There's networks to defend, and furniture to move and meals to serve .... Working ain't going away anytime soon, is my view
Not having to work is a problem for many for multiple reasons. One is, at least when I was long you always here if you get old, stop working you die. At this stage in life and how the media is, I almost feel like they pushed that to make people subconsciously want to work forever. Me personally I would be 100% fine if I didn't work a standard job, I like to make video games and while I spend crazy amount of hours working on it, much of it not fun, I still enjoy doing it. I think having a UBI where we all get what we need to live, but having the option to work, be it like me or artist, thinkers would work. I would have the ability to work more and have more than someone who just doesn't want to work, but I can do it on my time and wont need the stress of not being able to feed my family.
One path to making the "Winner's Club" more inclusive was suggested by Andrew Yang in his presidential bid in 2020. If you need to take a capitalism-based perspective to get Americans to buy in, we could simply decide that all citizens are EQUAL shareholders in the country's value and infrastructure. Corporate profits would need to be taxed more effectively (probably through a VAT) and from those proceeds all citizens would receive periodic "Dividend" disbursements. This UBI would be meaningless to the wealthy, but mean everything to those who are currently among the poor.

It's not uncommon for individuals to feel unsettled when the notion of a future where less work is required is brought up. Many worry about the implications of a society where the traditional demands of jobs are no longer as prevalent. They express concerns about the potential void that could arise, fearing a lack of purpose or meaningful activities to occupy their time. This apprehension stems from the deep-seated belief that work is central to one's identity and sense of fulfillment, and the prospect of its diminishing role can evoke feelings of uncertainty and unease about the future.
So let the fake identities crumble.
@@minimal3734 Absolutely agree. It's refreshing to see someone embracing the idea of slowing down and prioritizing what truly matters. Our bodies and minds deserve that attention, especially in a world that often glorifies hustle culture. Keep spreading this positive message!
Most people are living in a state of fear of change. Even in a destitute situation the change that is coming with AI makes people more fearful since seeing a benefit from it is (in their perspective) highly unlikely and most likely will be another point of conflict in extracting resources from their lives. My job could be eliminated right now from AI, ( if I had a small team to lay it out it would be incredibly easy to eliminate 90% of out service staff within a month) luckily it will not happen very soon. I have no other options & UBI would not even come close to paying my basic bills (school tuition alone is $1500 per month) So I see how the fear of the unknown income future makes people very resistant to the benefits that the upcoming AI evolution could entail.
