The Gardener's Friend 3-Stage Ratchet Pruners are easy to open and use once you understand how. This video shows how to lock and unlock the pruners (secateurs) and how to make simple pruning cuts using the tool.
This is one of the most sophisticated and simple tools for pruning on the market today.The are especially great for people with compromised hand mobility issues and take much less hand pressure to operate and execute pruning cuts. Great fro gardeners of all ability levels but especially great for those with Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendonitis and other issues affecting hand mobility.
The pruner lock works really smoothly and easily once you know this little process.
Hold the pruners in one hand like you are about to use them.
Squeeze together slightly. Then slide the little black lock mechanism with the other hand. It should slide really easily.
Simply reverse the process to close and lock.
When closed and latched they are held shut by a slight spring mechanism as a safety feature. Otherwise, they would not stay locked. By relieving the pressure keeping them closed you can easily open and close them.
It the slider is still stiff, just put a small drop of light oil on the inside of the slider and move back and forth but this is seldom necessary.
Once you get used to this you can easily open them with one hand but at first, use two.
We also recommend removing the little sponge and storing in a safe place because it will get lost if left in the handle.

Thank you for telling us that someone had trouble opening and closing these pruners. Even after watching you and squeezing the handles together, I still have to use a screw driver to push the slider up and back. However, you have reassured me that it will get easier with use. Until I watched your video I hadn't managed to unlock them at all.
