Still The Best Three Row In America? | 2021 Kia Telluride

  • After a year of being on sale, is the Telluride still the top dog? While I wish Kia offered a few more paint colors, and the second row isn't as child seat friendly as the Pathfinder, the Telluride excels with the most legroom in the segment, responsive handling, good acceleration, and solid good looks. While there are certainly reasons to buy a Highlander over the Telluride (mainly the available hybrid), I think everyone looking for a 3-row crossover needs to have this Kia on their shopping list.

    Your review is spot on. We purchased a 2021 Telluride SX Prestige with the tow package back in October. Hands down the nicest new car we have ever purchased. That coming from a family that has owned multiple Honda’s, Nissan, Mazda and Cadillacs. Refined is the word that most often comes to mind when we drive it. @@alextran8188 I forgot to mention. While Kia dealers are still selling the Tellurides close to sticker price and mostly higher trim versions, Ford (factory and dealers combined) actually is lopping nearly $10k off of high trim 2020 sticker prices to move their 2021 Explorers off the lot since the 2021s (only out a couple months, since Ford botched the 2020 release so badly) are already selling below invoice. This after they already lowered the MSRP by $4-5k.
      Ford is expected to sell about 220k Explorers in 2020, but over 50k Explorers were sold to fleets, rental car companies and police departments. The new Highlander has actually outsold the Explorer outright the last 4 months at the pace of about 260k units a year, and expected to outsell it for December as well, and that is without fleet sales. The next Pilot will also probably sell in somewhat similar but lower numbers. The Telluride is clearly limited by supply and clearly more desirable than the Highlander based on average transaction prices. If they had 300,000 of them to sell instead of the less than 80,000 they're going to sell in 2020 for a car that was specifically designed for the US (the Telluride isn't sold or made in S. Korea like the Palisade), they would easily sell them all, independent of Palisade sales, although not as close to sticker...

I looked at a very well equipped EX with Nightfall Package last night and retuned this morning and it was already sold. It’s crazy how well this is selling. Let’s hope they manage to improve on it as the years progress without messing it up (i.e. I had a 2006 Pilot and would have went for a newer model had Honda not cheapened the interior when it was a redesigned - the 3rd generation is better but too rounded and now looks just like a Minivan)

    The styling of the Telluride looks like a step above its class. It’s handsome, not fussy and the design should hold the test of time. On the other hand, The Highlander is handsome, but it doesn’t punch above its class. I also have a hard time with the rear 3/4 bumper view. It looks like someone backed in to it (or the driver backed in to something). It’s a deep crease that doesn’t do it any favors. It’s almost like Toyota built in the famous “Camry dent” in the rear bumper. The Palisade is also handsome but far more Asian looking. That will appeal to some buyers but the Telluride looks like it could be an American car (which, it is, both in design and build) which has a great appeal to the American buyer. Great review Alex. Hi Alex, really love and appreciate your videos. Can you do a video on cars comparing panoramic sun roofs in 3 row crossovers? I have 3 children who appreciate the view when driving in Manhattan, from their car seats. Going from a Santa Fe looking at the Palisade but I am losing the panoramic roof. Thanks.

    Highlander styling is too complicated in a bad way like GM tends to be. But the badge will make many sales. I like to combine legroom+Headroom+shoulder room to determine usable interior size. Makes decisions even more interesting....

    First of all, I'm a fan of your reviews. Thank you for all of intelligence. Also I'm a huge fan of Hyundai automobiles since 2007, with the first ever Korean vehicle I have the Sonata. Since then, I never looked at any other brands anymore. I agree with you about the front of Telluride and the rear of Palisade will be perfect designing, but I like the Palisade's interior more than Telluride. Anyway, I don't think Toyota highlander hybrid is fitting for compared with Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade. So, please don't mixed it up and confused the followers. It's just only my opinion.

    I gave up on it and got something else. Sure it's priced competitively in theory, but they still don't make anywhere near enough to satisfy demand. So the price difference is quite pronounced when you will be paying MSRP at best (top trims in my area are regularly several thousand above MSRP still), and you can still get the competitors for significantly off MSRP. And that's just the sale price, if you're financing it, the difference is even more pronounced because you won't find low APR manufacturer financing for that one any time soon. Still love it, but not enough to just ignore how expensive it is over the direct competition.

    Thanks for a thorough review. I’m puzzled by the cargo room in all vehicles in this class. Using the third row compromises cargo room in the back greatly. If I’m hauling 6-7 humans, I will need much more cargo room than the little space that’s offered. Humans come with lots of stuff. That leaves the only option of going up to a Suburban or minivan.

      Some of these dealers are taking advantage of the fact there are literally none of these to sell and demand is high. If any kia dealer wants over sticker don't even entertain them just walk out the door. The only reason why it's marked over sticker is because some joker actually will pay it! But the car is only worth whay we as consumers collectively agree to pay for it and that should be msrp!

    @MarkRVillano Před 3 lety +1

    I understand why most car companies don't offer the same range of motion and features on the passenger side of the vehicle, because precise positioning, and fatigue are not nearly as big a factor for the passenger, who has much more flexibility when it comes to where and how they sit (or recline). The seats are the same and offer the same basic level of comfort, but a passenger is usually able to find a good position without having to worry about getting the steering wheel, pedal placement, and proper view of the road that make positioning in the driver's seat much more important and less flexible for the driver.

    The Telluride is 0.4” longer than a Pilot, so the Telluride is a direct competitor to the Pilot. The Sorento is 7.5” shorter than the Pilot.
    You combined the sales of the telluride and the palisade for it to outsell the Pilot, which isn’t fair because since the launch of the passport, pilot sales have decreased so you should add the Pilot and the passport together and see how it stacks up against the Hyundai twins. ( Lexus also combines the sales of the RX and the RXL)
