- Where does an airliner go if it encounters an issue while crossing the North Pole? Diversions are never easy, especially when operating in the Arctic. This video briefing details the threats at Thule Airport (BGTL).

As a Canadian in the Air Force I love that it’s a Canadian Herc and soldiers in the Video
I was stationed at Thule AB, USAF Security Police, for a year in 1980. An awesome adventure. I miss it.
Can you elaborate with your experience?im heading there in March 2024.
I always feel sad when I see great videos with such low view counts. This is a very informative video, also the one about Kabul.
first rate cooking at the dining hall in Thule...well worth the diversion...
I must tell this story, it got printed in the Air Force magazine. In the late 80's being a C-141B crewman we had a stop in Thule at 0 dark thirty, it was about 28 below if I remember correctly. We had space "A" passengers and the Toilets required pumping and we needed fuel. A lone airman had the duty I guess and got the fuel truck out, fueled us, and then went to retrieve the pumping truck. Our AC was short-tempered and wanted him to rush it up. The airman said he was doing his best. That was not good enough for our AC and said he would report it. The Airman 1st class replied, I'm already in Thule, it is 28 below and I am pumping poop from your stinky airplane, what else could you possibly do to me?
Thank you for this Briefing. Very detailed and definitely adding value in enhancing SA of the threats
Lately, we were flying on a northerly route and my college told me about the Thule AFB, that in case of medical emergency, uncontained cargo fire etc., it would be better to divert there, instead of continuing to our etops alternate. Thanks for the video, very informative.
Thanks for the briefing! Well done!
As another polar ops guy, this is a brilliant video. We need more of these to be honest.
Hi, thank you for your kind words, and congrats on making the first comment on this channel :) Lots of airports coming up, maybe Svalbard, Norilsk, Kangerlussuaq... any other suggestions?
@@threatforward Flying over the pole, the Russian Arctic airfields are a bit enigmatic. But nothing with the issues that Thule has. Svalbard is a good shout too.
@@threatforward yes please; also Tiksi and Chokurdakh 🙏🏻

@@threatforward Kabul and thule were very relevant to me since i did simulator checks on them and your videos helped me out quite a bit and ILS in hot weather couldn't been done any better really helps me be a better pilot to understand all the relevant threats, I like the style and how convenient it is that they're very relevant to me im pretty sure any video you would make would help me and tons of other pilots thank!
Yankee Go home 😊
