This video discusses the history of frog pregnancy tests and chytrid fungus. Before at-home pregnancy tests existed, people used frogs to determine if they were pregnant. The use of frog pregnancy tests had incredibly terrible consequences for amphibians around the world. When these frogs were eventually released from their labs, they spread a deadly fungus, called "chytrid fungus" or Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, across every continent. This caused amphibian populations to plummet across the world and many amphibians went extinct entirely. In telling this story, this video answers the following questions:
How were frogs used as pregnancy tests?
Were frogs used as pregnancy tests?
What is chytrid fungus?
How bad is chytrid fungus?
How did chytrid fungus spread?
How does chytrid fungus affect amphibians?

"Frog Pregnancy Tests"
me: "Frog what?"
When I clicked this I thought it would talk about how to test a frog being pregnant 😂
@@nolanclarke8589 if a man injected his pee, the frog will be!
I thought the same😭
@@nolanclarke8589 me too-
Frog Pregnancy Tests is not a list of word i'd see next to each other
If i had a kid i would totally have them watching your channel instead of cocomelon 😂
My five year old loves these videos!
So in other words, the frog extinction wouldn’t happened if us human either 1: import them back to their homeland and release them or 2: Put them down since they’re considered invasive species to the other lands.
Unfortunately, our understanding of the ecological world was not as advanced as it is today. There are countless examples of introductions (both intentional and unintentional) across the planet having unforeseen impacts on their environment.
@@CormacHolland exactly. if humans in the past knew about conservations, we probably would’ve still be able to see live Dodos today.

"Because I didn't wanna know"
"Mom last time I pee to a frog and it's laying egg💀"
Girls do the sexiest things.
I was trying to figure out why my brain loves all the little background noises you do so much and it came to me… it reminds me of cartoons/kids shows, just brings a lil nostalgia😌
"everything you didn't know about frog pregnancy tests"
that... that would be everything...
Brought to my mind the episode from M*A*S*H, when Hawkeye used one of Radar's rabbits for a pregnancy test for Margaret Houlihan.
“What are you doing?”
“injecting pee into a frog”
Good to see you back

This type of comment is the type of lack of appreciation that leads to creator burnout and then to stop creating. Do better.
@@Lapavlaoh I didn’t know. Good 👍
What an interesting video! Thank you! Could you cover the invasive bat fungus that gives them a santa beard?
Interesting
FINALLY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG FOR A VIDEO
Here I am, a herpetologist, screaming “THE CHYTRID FUNGUS” at my screen at 6:16
Can I get my medal now? because I’m in massive college debt and I need something to show for it.
So basically, we released frog plague 😢
Another story of humans thinking they know what they are doing and destroying nature and the beautiful variety of animals in it. 😢
In the end, we will end up in a desolate, barren world devoid of any diversity in its flaura and fauna, devoid of everything that once made it beautiful and most importantly devoid of all the qualities that made it livable for us and that will be the price for our hubris. The saddest thing is that we will deserve it too.😢
Oh, wow. That frog 1:52 is 70 years old!?
Science is incredible.
Thank you for always Teaching us Beauty of Nature 🐀🐊🐋🐒🐥🐆❤️🙏
Human being human...
Killing everything.
Good to see this channel is growing. I love the contents. It deserves more reach. ❤
Why does the frog look so goofy lmao
To lull you into a false sense of security. Not only do they have fungus but they're vicious. If you have them in an aquarium, they'll eat all the other animals in the tank.
i knew about this for a while. been waiting to see a video like this, you did really well brother!
I had no idea thats how chytrid originally began spreading... i need to research this more. Insane
Isn’t it crazy?! I studied herpetology in college... it really adds an extra heaping layer of misanthropy to your day.
The Good news is, there’s some hope. If herpetologists act quickly enough, many amphibians can breed in captivity and eventually be reintroduced, and there are many studies being conducted to help find an ecologically safe solution.
Look into the Golden Panamanian Frog, though.
I wanted to get a tattoo of one, because to me they represent overcoming adversity, against all odds. When I saw some in an exhibit at the Atlanta zoo, I am not exaggerating when I say that I cried- because it meant that the population that the team collected were successfully breeding.
Bro, finally posted

My grandfather was an endocrinologist and my mother tells me they had a shed in the backyard where my grandfather kept all the frogs to do pregnancy tests
The pharmacist after seeing him buy a pregnancy test and saying its for a video 😂😂
What I really want to know is how they discovered that frogs could be used for that
Fascinating! Wow! ❤🎉 Thank you for such a cool episode! Noice job!!!
The way you present the information in this video reminds me of David Attenborough.
Love how interesting the ecosystem i. At first I thought you were going to say that the frogs were having babies Humans out here in the wild. When you look at their hands they look like humans I would not doubt it great video
Great video!
Frogs are cute but i will not be doing that 🤢
Finally bro uploaded 😄😄😄😄😄😄
I wasn’t expecting be watching this first thing in the morning, but here I am 😅
I'm so hyped
I am waiting for a long time
frog pregnancy test is probably a combination of words that you could pull out of a hat
I knew it, but I didn't know humans also realised a virus. That was very interesting to listen to, thank you for your work!:D
P.S. to be honest I'm really disappointed how many people here being not so polite about the video. Like, it's interesting from the view of science, why you need to comment "whо аsk"? The creator put a lot of effort in his videos to make them interesting but straight to the point at the same time.
P.P.S. I may have some mistakes here, sorry for that, English is my third language I started to learn, so I'm not that good in it.
Please do Rabbit pregnancy tests next 🎉
Welcome back 👏
My Grandma used to be a nurse, and told me about using frogs for pregnancy tests. Pretty strange procedure.
But how the frog gets pregnant by injecting urine?
Explain if you know.
I love your videos
4:30 you could call it a mass extinction
Thats why poison dart frogs went nearly extinct

How to post calm videos like this
My grandmother never worked in a piss-injecting frog factory.
Not the frogs bro! I never knew my little amphibian buddies are in danger.
This is one of the youtubers that I have to watch at 1.5x speed
Why is the frog in the video still alive? it's unusual to see live animals in this video, btw great video!
Is he playing with lego?
My grandma told me she peed on a rabbit to test if she was pregnant, if the rabbit died then that meant she was pregnant and was probably ganna eat a stew later, haha thank you for your videos and keep sharing cool knowledge😊
How species of animals and brids and insect do you have
Wow...
1:53 how did it survive that long?
Its the same species not the same one
This guy reminds me of Mr . Roger. Will you be my neighbor.
hi odd animal specimens
Rabbit pregnancy tests were so bad my Mom refused to do that.
I didn't know tests needed frogs to get preganant 🤔
welp, I got an African clawed frog, time to test it out
I had to watch this at my grandmas house why. . .
Wow poor frogs
One of the most odd and bizarre things I've found, lol I'd would like to know *HOW* humans discovered the relation between human pee and these specific frogs.
Btw, the labs are to blame, they're suposed to be managed by smart ass people, the same people who were in charge of managing these frogs.
5:19 WHY LEGO 💀💀💀💀💀
20 minutes?!?!?!?
I'm curious about how the pee actually makes them lay eggs🤔
Yeh me to
