Yamaha VSTAR 1100 Strange Electrical issue - Intermittent Speedo & Signals

  • After getting the bike back together, the wife and I took our bikes to the coast for a test drive. Id noticed when letting off of the throttle that the speedometer started shutting down which immediately gave me cause for concern as this is a low voltage indication and cause for charging system failure. Testing showed however this was not the case.
    Why would the speedometer and then later discovered the turning signals only work just fine when laying on the gas but die when slowing down? A shorted cable? an opening ground? connecting or disconnecting from inertial forces????
    The answer is stranger than you think!!!!

    I have a 1998 Royal-star. Just got back from a short ride with the same symptoms. Looks like if you blow the turn fuse the Spedo and Odo are going to be intermittent. Thanks for the video!!! Kept me from cussing for a few hours. Went straight to the turn fuse, was blown, replaced and now everything is back to normal.

      Glag I was able to help, Again it depends on how to the fuse breaks, that can lead to different symptoms, the point is almost always all of them point to a fuse event.

    Hi I was wondering if you have ever checked your mid shaft nut or had issues with it? It is a common issue with V-Star 1100 and can be a safety issue as it can potentially lock up your rear wheel if it comes off.

    This was an awesome video. Just got a Yamaha v star off a friend about three weeks ago. I had the same problem each time I pulled the clutch it died out. Ironically as soon as this problem happened I also ran out of gas for the first time ever. I only had about 90miles on the tank as well. How many miles do u get per tank?

    I'm having a problem with my 2008 vstar classic 1100. First time I had an issue the battery while driving. I changed out the battery and before long that battery went dead. I changed the stator, no difference. (although I had to change the plug on the stator because it was different then the one being replaced. I then changed the coils, the starter clutch and then the rectifier. The bike now starts but backfires, doesn't run smooth. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

    @kieranwyse9739 Před 5 lety

    Yep More or less the same problem with an XVS950A Midnight star. The speedo needle could not complete the switch on sequence,and the display did not appear. So the tests for current paths, and the fuses with the trusty Fluke meter, which did not reveal any faulty connections. Alas for no reason the unit worked properly without any encouragement.during checks. There is a permanent 12 Volt supply to the meter: Keeps the Time and trip meter settings: Another 12 Volt supply is the switched one,this brings on the display warning Lights Meter Lights etc. The trouble was the speedo died whilst riding,legal need to have a working speedo, So all connections especially earth ones were checked out. The connector blocks and harness wiring all looked at.
    In the end a replacement speedo had to be installed, and no trouble since that was done.

    • @retrotechandelectronics
      @retrotechandelectronics  Před 5 lety

      Did you take apart the old speedo cluster to see what was wrong, there is usually a surface mount resistor that burns up and thats it.

  • @tjmac9284
    @tjmac9284 Před 2 lety

    So my bike just did that and then the next day wouldn't start. I haven't got to look at it yet. But do you think mine is just a charging issue? Some of my lights still work, but it just makes a bad sound, my speedo and odo trip meter won't work.

    Keeps popping that fuse every time I replace it and ride a couple miles. Dealer Combed through the wiring underneath the gas tank and could not find a short anywhere. Combing though.... Never measured the current in that circuit..... or the measured current with each apparent load removed to find a possible shorting piece of equipment if it wasn't a wire. It isnt always a wire.... Sometimes its a load..

  • @geordiesworld
    @geordiesworld Před 2 lety

    Barking up the wrong tree with that .. the fuse is goosed because you have a bad earth short or something mimicking it . Led rear indicators ? But bulb fronts on a 5 wire flasher relay do this .. I've yet to find the full solution and suspect it requires diodes. It's certainly not a fuse joining back up .. did you get any further with this ?

    Hello I have a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Classic. I have a video of what the bike is doing
    czcams.com/video/WqBWMvhF8dM/video.html
    The issue appears after a few seconds after starting the bike. My question is do you think a Speedometer sensor could cause this issue? I have checked Coils the ohms are within range. I disconnected the speedo and put back on. I have searched most all connections. Battery is charged and tight (no Loose connections). The only thing I have left is the Speed sensor. That entails some work to get to it. That's why I'm asking. Thanks for reading my comment.
