Tawny I'm in Florida. There is a slaughter house in Fort Lauderdale, they say it's closed but it is not. We don't have a place but the auction to surrender a horse too. Regardless the owners situation. We need you to help all of us. I rescued 2 horses in Tampa. We're a lady with diabetes was buying feed instead of medicine. She had no one and no where to surrender. Her daughter reached out to me to help her. Be the answer, tell people who to reach out too. Give a phone number to call for help in every state, instead of saying people take to the slaughter pipeline for (whatever).

Thing is, Keith, like most people who are genuinely hard workers doesn't need it. They do as they're asked because they have good hearts and, more importantly, they take pride in their work. They don't need limelight & other such nonsense because the MOST IMPORTANT pat on the back comes from themselves.... nobody else.
It's people who don't take pride in their work, who need their hands held and others praising even the most insignificant of their achievements, who need limelight.
That pig had me cracking up lol but thank you guys for all you do for these animals. I'm disabled and cannot work due to health. Even across a screen this provides animal therapy. Really reduces anxiety. And gives some hope in this dark world.
Horse auctions were the same way 40 years ago. I sat with tears running down my face as my heart was breaking. And back then, there were no shelters or safe places for the horses to go. I seen a little Shetland pony with hooves that were curled back into his legs, and they had to pull/push him through the ring, because he couldn't walk. People were actually angry and hollering at them for doing what they did. He sold for $5. Whatever happened to him I'll never know. I just hope that he was given the last act of kindness quickly. I have not been back to a horse auction since, I would end up in jail.
I'm so glad none of the drafts had to be euthanized. They often seem to come in basically worked until they broke down, but those four don't look too bad. I hope they make it.

I just watched one of the latest videos on this channel and I saw this lovely draft who had to be put down because of the most horrific leg injury. I’m so sad. I felt sick about how anyone could let that beautiful creature come down to that stage.
The drafts looked pretty bonded. Those poor guys have worked hard their whole lives to end up at an auction. I’m so excited the they are in decent shape abs hopefully find a good home. That little white donkey stole my heart. What a sweet little soul.
Man, that donkey that knew what apples are has me bawling now. Someone had to teach it what apples were, and they likely cared about him
The mare that was too aggressive and violent to even be around humans was still very lucky to have gone home from the auction with you. She would have suffered horrifically if she'd been handled by the auction pipeline, the auction staff, the slaughterhouse staff. Her pain would have been much worse if she hadn't gone home to your rescue. I'm sorry she couldn't be saved, but you guys did the right thing for her.
Imagine being scared out of your mind already and then put through the rough handling they do at those slaughterhouses. She met a much kinder fate.
She likely had something wrong with her to be that aggressive as even many "aggressive horses" don't go after people without any warning or noticeable behavior changes you can predict (ears pinned, getting into your space, charging forward in a stall, etc.) which normally indicates a neurological issue and not a training issue. The slaughter pipeline would not care and would say she was disobedient or disrespectful and would have used excessive force. Glad she is resting peaceful now.
Maybe she was simply scared. Wish you would have given her time to settle down. I would have left her alone for a month.
@@SecretLemonadeDrinker First, where? BLM is getting rid of their land and their horses by rounding up more and more and selling them each year. BLM doesn't have the funding and public backing it did years ago. Secondly, there is not always a good chance of survival rate for a domesticated horse who could possibly need shoes or at least need farrier work to magicly be "OK" wearing their feet down and be totally OK in the wild. What herd would just take in some new violent mare and how do we know the BLM would not just round her up and sell her to someone next year? It's a childlike ask and I would have to double check but potentially illegal as well. Also, Kill buyers do go to BLM Auctions and buy up horses and take them over the border to slaughter. A single horse is also unlikely to survive on it's own and could end up hurting any person that it comes across and if they go "that was the mare from Horse Plus that killed our BLM Agent on his rounds" they are getting sued or closed. I hope this answers your question as to why. We don't have the herds of majestic mustangs running across the US anymore. We have people who want housing and our mustang population has some serious health issues and is being downsized all of the time.
@@cybilm133 Fear reactivity is something that you can see in body language. The horse is responding to an external stimuli such as people moving. They would shy away or give some warning of discomfort such as bulking or saying with body language "I'm not Sure/Comfortable with this" before attacking. The issue was that the attacks were completely unpredictable and she did it without warning and for no apparent reason. Since horses are prey animals when given enough room to move away from something they fear they normally do move away and not attack, bite, etc. The fact she attacked several staff was of great concern as well as the trainer who imo does seem to know how to handle a tougher horse and send them off.
Why not keep her for a month? First, I believe they couldn't fully vaccinate her which if you are coming from auction there is a SIGNIFICANT risk of equine diseases that run through those places hence the quarantine period that they place the horses in before they even allow them with other horses. We are talking one sick horse can come in from an auction having gone there not ill and picked up Strangles and brought it back to your barn and all of your horses get it and need antibiotics every single day with puss oozing from their necks. Your water and feed buckets can't even be shared with non quarantine horses it is that easily spread. If she gets sick you can't treat her because she can't be safely handled.
Next issue, where do you put her and how do you actually care for her? You can't stall her for a month as that needs to be cleaned and she needs exercise so that means people interacting with her and potentially getting bit, kicked, and just plain hurt. They have a large quarantine pasture but putting her with other horses can be a risk as well as a large area because people may come in and get the other horses for medical treatments to farriers or to even just pet and she would charge through that fence. Unless they were set up for an aggressive horse or had a mustang pen there is nowhere she may not get loose and hurt someone and that would be on them. I wish they all could be rescued but unless you want to donate about $10K for the type of safe pen she would need for a horse like that and the staff were willing to work with an aggressive horse who may still need to be put down then they really are left with no other options. She would also be isolated from other horses in that pen and one staff member would need to feed and bring her water and this would be someone who was well educated in horses and willing to risk their own safety. Normally people who take on this job have that kind of mustang ring at their own home IF they are willing to take on the challenge and they know the risks involved. It is living with that horse and devoting a massive amount of time to a horse they don't know is fixable. It would be like the trainer ignores every other horse there and only deals with her for as long as they are willing to foot the bill so other horses would pay for it in the end as they don't have trainers lined up to help train horses for free. You also have liability like she spoke of where someone taking food and water to this horse which would need to be a trainer/highly educated horse person could get injured just bringing her food and water and they own the horse so the liability for this person's injuries is solely on them. Say the person is badly hurt and this horse wont let you near the injured person, she gets put down in the spot and the medical bills could be massive or loss of life and equine insurance for a facility only covers so much and not usually aggressive animals.
For them to put such significant resources, time, energy, and take into account the MASSIVE RISK involved, IF the trainer felt comfortable with this option, it just does not balance out to actually do it. The risk assessment is just too great for severe bodily injury to a person vs the chance of recuperation. As horses who normally behave in incredibly unpredictable ways that are not like a horse or prey animal and without warning in their body language normally have a neurological issue that is not "fixable" and can't be overcome with training. Horses can be aggressive but they still normally pin their ears back and let you know they are going to bite you, kick you, charge you, etc. so it's the lack of predictability that is of key importance here.

My daughter had her retina detached from a bike ing accident. I didn’t know how they fixed iit in Germany! That little white pony that jumped out of the trailer had my heart. So gallant. I agree with the last act of kindness for the violent horse. The draft horses are so beautiful.
All the horses you guys adopt I make little endings to their stories. The draft horses become therapy horses for veterans, the paint becomes a western pleasure show horse, the white mini gets to be loved by little girls and the standardbred gets to be a pasture mate to live his life out as a true horse. I think it's nice to imagine them in their dream homes, it's all we want for them!

Sorry, but the animal rights activists that shut down horse slaughter in this country, are largely responsible for the horrible conditions many of these animals show up in at auction. Instead of being able to take an animal to a local slaughter, where they do have to be humanely disposed of, they instead forced slaughter buyers to cram these animals into huge double decker trucks to make itfinancially viable to travel the huge distances the now have to go to reach borders to other countries that realize life isn't all rainbows and unicorn farts. This means animals are crammed in as tight as they can get, which means more injuries and deaths, if an animal falls during transport, they can't get up, a d will be repeatedly trampled, and animal transporters will also go to the next closest auction to see if they can unload more horses they weren't able to sell at the last ones. I have owned horses my entire life and kept them until age or bad injury required humane euthanasia, but not everyone has that option! Many are forced by finances to bring their horses to auction, or since the govt makes it more difficult for people to euthanize and bury on their own property, slaughter was a necessary evil, but it was far more humane in this country than in others and now the animal rights activists caused far more harm than good, Because they never consider the whole process or the alternatives. And if you block people from crossing borders with horses for slaughter, that will again cause more damage to horses, who will end up being shot and dumped or turned loose to femd for themselves.

I would think he could be gelded, his feet brought back to normal and then you’d have a very nice gaited gelding.
People need to boycot any shows with big lick horses. You'd think in this era people had risen above this sort of cruel entertainment. It's gross.

What is big lick? Sorry but I'm not a horse person & have no idea what this means for the horses?
@@RebekkaRN1962 It's a cruel and exaggerated version of the Tennessee walking horse's natural gait. Big Lick shows have horses with stacks (basically platform shoes) on their front feet. I believe they are often weighted so the horse has to throw the foot up more. Then in addition to this, they sore the horses ankles with chemicals and then put chains around their ankles. The chains hitting the soreness causes the horse to fling its foot up even more in pain. Many claim they don't sore the animals and that the stacks aren't cruel, but like Tawnee said, they don't get a chance to be a horse because they can't be allowed to go run in a pasture with stacks on.
The resulting walk that they have is, imo, horrible looking and is grossly unnatural. If you google it, you'll see what I mean

I'm hoping it's not though and that someone saw the condition of horses and said this is not for me to buy and just handed that money over to the rescue. Trust me, Horse Plus is actually buffering what they show and this is horrific enough! If you have ever attended one, you'll know what I mean! What you can see there are the things straight out of nightmares! It even provoked me to want to become violent and hunt down the people that allowed this! Way out of character for a nonviolent person such as myself. If you do plan on attending one, word of advice, don't have supper before you go, it won't stay down long!!!

I still think of knitting a balaclava and going on a puppy mill rescue mission. Cannot abide animal cruelty. So yes I hear you. Have you seen a film called Powder? A shooter is forced to experience the pain felt by the deer he just killed. O I wish. Anyway thank goodness for Horse Plus. They walk well the line between truth and an ugliness so painful it would turn us all away.

I learned this from my parents at a very early age using the Powder technique. LOL Nothing abusive. Like if we held our pet and they wanted to get away, mom or dad would hold us so we could see what it felt like to have a bigger person have control over a smaller one. Come to think about this, I believe that was why none of us were bullies. : )
@@geminidream4347 yes- your parents ‘educated your imagination’. Interestingly so did my father. We visited a convict settlement and he gently told me what they would have experienced- cold, scuttling rats, prickly wool garments. He asked me if I would stand in the cell and he would close the door. He left me maybe 30 seconds after I started asking to come out. So I felt a brief flash of abandonment with my wishes irrelevant. Perfect timing- he was a born teacher. I learned deeply but was not traumatised. We were lucky weren’t we.

Our politicians would rather spend time on things that don't matter. Pronouns are SO IMPORTANT while our countries go down the toilet. Ukraine's borders have our soldiers helping out, while our country is wide open for drugs, child sex trade, people in dangerous gangs, people sick with the latest disease. We pray and we will keep praying. Why won't the republicans get serious and fight for us?

Slaughter may be outlawed here, but shipping them off inhumanely is not. Our laws need to be much stronger to protect animals.

In Canada they breed and feed out big Belgians for slaughter. Many are shipped to Japan.

Thank you for rescuing these 36 souls. The laws must be changed. I am not sure about banning injured/sick horses at auction, else they would be left to suffer and die by their owners. But close the borders for slaughter. No more.
If the Palamino mare was in Australia we would use a honey treatment. It was believed that Manuka honey was the only type but now after scientific research, they know that any pure honey will do the same thing. The honey kills any superficial infection and keeps the tissue soft yet allows the wound to breathe. She would get anti-inflammatories for internal help and the honey applied daily or more often if required for external help. A fly spray is necessary if the soil is bare or it is bad weather.
Another really good treatment for wounds is Paw Paw Ointment, developed in Australia and made from paw paw or many parts of the world know the fruit as papaya. A man developed it here and it works a treat but I don't know if it is available in other parts of the world. It can heal the worst cases of proud flesh and leave the healed soft tissue almost scar-free.

Paw- Paw ointment.....I really rate that stuff, it works like magic on superficial burn,grazes
& more ! When I left I did a bulk buy, they do sell abroad but the price is exorbitant!
our clinic uses it a lot too!!! it works wonders! we are in the netherlands.
Also used in hospital for some skin issues.
Wish i had known this or had some when i got my own burns. Fun i learned something totally new to me today thanks

I had a detached retina that just happened out of the blue. Also had the surgery with the bubble. It was scary but healed up well. Hang in there Doc!!

Horse meat isn't legal in other provinces to eat nor slaughter.
Atlas cargo ship live draft horses to Japan for slaughter. People have tried to stop the farm that raises these horses with little success in BC.
I usually don't donate to charity. Because I can't be sure where the money is really going. But with you guys, I can really see exactly how the money is being used. You're going into next month's budget.💞

Yes, Tawnee the "backend stuff" is never fun whether it's administrative, rescue OR stable stuff. LOL! Thank you ALL for doing what you do. Wish I could donate more, but living on social security only allows a little. I'll always donate whatever I can just to help you give these beautiful animals a chance; they need and deserve a good home, love and care. (Just like all of us.) LOL! That donkey was like "oh! a nice person with an apple" in the middle of this nightmare! Bless you Tawnee, they ALL need Love!

I know it is futile to hate, but the people who neglected these animals, and then put them in auction are very good candidates for a hate list.
I don't waste energy on a "hate list"; I just know that karma DOES work and it does come back around when they least expect it. Those who abuse animals are setting themselves up for terrible things to come. Don't stand too close!

Thanks for explaining the problem with the horse that was being so unpredictably aggressive. With her aggressiveness being expressed as it was, there has to be an underlying physiological or chemical problem she was suffering from. She at least was able to end her life in some kind of peace. The little white horse was so sweet, and the little horse with cancer on her tail was just painful to watch. Bless her heart. I was extremely glad to see all four drafts were saved. I hope the damaged hooves are able to mend well. Draft horses are my favorite horses of all. They are such gentle giants and deserve far better treatment at the ends of their lives than they get. Thanks, everyone, for all the time and love you give these wounded soldiers with tails. You are their angels.

Glad the draft have a chance. Long road with those hooves, but capable care you can provide.
After that walker gets the nip, giving him a couple mares to put him in line my help. Make him safer as he learns socialization and boundaries.
Border states need to select elected officials to stop transfer to Mexico and Canada.
We need help to make that difference. Our wants aren't blocking. NY doesn't want them and have attempted to stop before border but kill buyers dump before being pulled over.
Until NO is the vote, Ontario won't step up. Please make a difference one border at a time.

Thank you very much for giving unfixable horses the last act of kindness. It's a difficult call, but it's one I have had to do for 3 dogs and 2 cats. A pet owner/guardian should do what is best for the animal they care for, not just dump them at auction. Yea, I've had to pay the vet, but my animals gave me so much live and companionship. It's the least I can do to help their death be less painful when the time comes for that. One dog I waited too long and let her suffer too much, took her to every vet in town without finding out why she was suffering in her old age. Next time around, with an old dog with neurological damage of unknown origin, I took my dog in on Valentine's Day to have her put down. That was the most loving thing I could do for her. I took care of my mother when she was dying and in Hospice care at home. It's what you do when you love a person or animal. You care for them, throughout their life and help them when it's time to die.
Through out the years we have had several cats and dogs put to sleep. Everyone was hard, but the family knows it's for the best..we all cried, told stories, missed them for a long time after....most were in the mid to late teens.our last cat I adopted from the humane society, he was 1-1/2yrs old, declawed, (horrible business), neutered and picked me out. Reached through cage to pat my head, meowed and said take me, take me..take me...
Lol...Kramer had a great life with us, he loved to play with our dog, loved the 3 kids, hubby and I. After a vet check it was decided he was too sick to carry on (kidney disease)...brought him home cried for 3 days, scheduled his sleeping appt, and cried both during and after...but I held him, and talked and sung to him, as he slowly went to sleep....family cried another 3-4 days, and every so often after that for several months. We figured out, if our math was correct, he lived until he was 20-21 years old. He was loved and cared for..we still miss Kramer...he was a great boy.......had great dogs too. They went to the rainbow Bridge the same way. Still miss them all. Most of our pets were 18-20+ years old. They are all buried in my flower beds. With markers. I still miss them all.
Don't let anyone ever tell you that you are doing the wrong thing by giving them a shot of mercy. Better that than to suffer indefinitely. You can tell your workers, donators, and any one else who gives you a hard time about it.

I wish I had the money to keep a horse, a big gentle draft would be exactly what I'd want. Although I'd definitely need a mounting block for that one considering I'm 1.52m :D That cracked hoof looked really bad.
Animals feel afraid, fear others, and suffer greatly when they are hurt through their feelings, or through torture, just as we do. But they are kind and gentle by nature.... humans are mostly cruel monsters.

I love donkeys. They are fierce pasture protectors. And they have loads of personality and character. Love love love them.
On the white horse I’d clear up the infection with antibiotics and then pack the wound with sugar. It helps with granulation and regrowth of new skin.
I'll say a prayer that Doc's surgery went perfectly. You guys are doing great work and don't let anyone give you worries about making the hard choices for these horses. There are crazy horses just like there are crazy people and those horses are not fit for adoption. Sometimes horses get brain damage and are just broken and can't be fixed.
All i can say about the Amish that sell their workers in that condition go on to meet their God and that God holds the same regard for their well being as they did for their 4 legged friends.
Good and bad people in every group. They have puppy mills too.

The people and I use that lightly,to let horses donkeys to get in that state should be ashamed of themselves. The love and kindness you give to those animals is wonderful, ye all are true heroes. I'm in Ireland 🇮🇪 hope to go on your site to buy something soon. Keep up the great work you all do.
Many in the Amish community are not only huge contributors to the puppy mill trade they also run their horses into the ground before auctioning them off instead of rendering proper and often expensive vet care.
That's disgraceful and certainly goes against what their Bible dictates about being good stewards and which also says "bless the beasts and children," which means for all to cherish, protect, and care for these innocent souls.

To the Amish horses and dogs are considered nothing but "livestock", dogs are a huge money making opportunity and they live tragic lives all for the bottom dollar when they should be treating their animals properly with love and respect.

Thank goodness there is these awesome people to take these beautiful, loving animals. I swear there are humans who should never ever be allowed to have another animal ever again. When I worked on the Falkland Ranch B.C. Canada ( ranch got sold woo hoo), the rodeo horses that were bought from an auction where not being treated for infections made me sick to my stomach.
Pigs are always dramatic. LOL! They have their own agenda and they don't like someone messing with it. But I love pigs. Especially the little ones. I call them pigmies. They are so cute!
Loved seeing the rescue of so many donkeys. Miss seeing the in-depth coverage of the in-take process back at the shelter vs watching so much of the auction.
I'd actually like to see both (would not mind a 2 hour episode). But if I had to chose I'd prefer the in-take

My boy when I got him was covered in rain rot head to tail. After washing him regularly I massaged cold pressed sweet almond oil into his coat and skin(full of zinc) so good for the skin. His skin improved and his coat came back beautifully

I hope you do well Doc! I had the same procedure back in Jan. 2020. The surgery itself was fine. No pain since you are under the influence. The only difficult part was staying on my side for 40 minutes of every hour. Some have to stay on their stomach.
I think with the media team you have now everyone is so much more informed. Which is important to have people see. The conditions are horrific . I am so glad you can get what you can. Even if you have to give the last gift of kindness. It is done with love and Grace and you are able to do it yourselves. Most should have been given the last gift of kindness way before you see them.

No amount of money could ever make me think about sending my babies to an auction! I'd rather use all the money I have to make sure they get the last act of kindness to peacefully pass away. My standardbred came from an auction and he was the first horse I have actually seen still with the multiple auction tags on him, thankfully he was rescued and landed in a peaceful home with me being spoiled and loved for the rest of his days. I can't thank Horse Plus enough for giving animals a second chance at life even if it only for a short time for those who are too sick.

You guys are so amazing and thank God for you and your love for these poor animals. It just breaks my heart the look of pure fear in their eyes as you guys are running them out to be loaded up. They don't realize they're on their way to paradise. Most have probably never had any kindness or love. You guys give each one that. It's amazing how they rest their heads against you all even though they're terrified. Horses are so loving and forgiving. The look of pure joy when they come off the trailers onto your beautiful property is priceless. Please keep being the amazing people you all are.
