  • In this auction rescue episode, we save 47 horses from slaughter! You also will get to go on a ride-along with everyone's favorite farrier, Garrick, as he goes to pick up a horse that needs rescuing.
We move all the horses in quarantine down to the main part of our facility to get them evaluated and make room for our next auction rescue! There were so many horses that were in need of our help. We rescue a draft who has a horrific eye injury, and much more! You will not want to miss a second of this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes.
Please support our rescue and sheltering efforts as we rescue, shelter and protect horses not only in Tennessee but across the United States!

In the future, if you get draft horses, in Texas there is a couple that has a farm outside of Amarillo and they take drafts. The drafts are not sold or rehomed. They are there for retirement. It is called Fletcher Farm Amarillo. It is a wonderful place. They take care of the horses and love them and allow them to retire.

The horse with the halter mark on his nose is similar to a 6 week old colt I purchased at auction in Australia. He had a halter on that was way too small and had started to dig into the skin. Luckily it left no lasting damage. His mum had to be euthanised after weaning as she had neurological problems. I had him until I injured my back and couldn’t look after him properly (aged 6) I reformed him to my friend who still has him now. (Aged 9)

Some of these horses broke my heart. Especially the grey with the melanomas. My old Arabian gelding was a grey and had melanomas around the base of his tail, and one small one on his neck, but my vet determined they were benign, and they never invaded his digestive system, or went farther than skin deep on him, like that poor grey. I was so lucky to have my horse to the ripe old age of 27, before I lost him to a stroke. At least he never suffered.
Thank you for caring for all these horses, and for doing this auction rescue in memory of Caden. Hugs to you all.

Please report the owner of that mustang (that is on those papers) to BLM so they don't adopt to that person again. There is a money incentive for adopters but there is also regulations to get that money (like owning the horse for one year at least and/or limited sales). If one gets away with tossing a mustang into the auction pipeline and continues to adopt for that incentive, it's a bad thing.

My hubby had to give the last act of kindness to his tiny Chihuahua last year she was 5 years old. Suffered an injury during fireworks that freaked her out. He took her to vets. So many different opinions and no firm help. Turns out she had broken all 4 legs. So pissed at the vets.

@@patriciahayden8955 I had a cat that was vomiting constantly, on and off for six months. I was rushing him to the vet every two months. They kept on giving me different advice and I followed them to the letter, it still didn’t improve and he was losing weight.
One night I realized he was dropping his food and wasn’t eating that well. (He was always an easy keeper), so I tried to check his mouth, which I never had an issue with.
He started howling in pain, I couldn’t even open his mouth halfway. The next day I called the vet absolutely livid and they said that they couldn’t see me for two weeks.
When they finally did and I insisted on them checking his teeth.
His gums were completely inflamed. They made me wait another two weeks before they could do the surgery and that point he was so bad that he lost a tooth.

100% Agree -- Training Saves Horses! The best thing you can do is take the time to teach them. Even those destined to be pasture pets need solid manners or they're going to get passed up, loaded up and shipped to the border. I do hope you give the stringhalt horse a chance, though. I've pulled them out of auction before to find out that it was due to toxicity, not injury. Fingers crossed that's the only issue. (Well, that and the burs!) So many of these horses could have been saved so much pain if their owners would just step up, show some compassion, and have them put down humanely. What a shame.

And, believe me, it won’t be the germs that they will need to worry about.

Devil’s Garden horses come from Modoc County in NE California…I’m very surprised that that mustang ended up in TN. Maddie certainly has a good way with the horses…just really like her ways. The little mini (palomino) was so darn cute. The standardbred was certainly used up…the one big Belgian looks like he’s so sweet . There were certainly a number that definitely need the last act of kindness. Who gets the job of getting those horrible stickers out of the manes and tails…certainly a big job.

I once worked as a guide for an outfit in the Gold Field/Superstition Mountain area of AZ. Heard about a neglected horse from our farrier; went over there with a trailer and a $50 bill. Little Appaloosa named Domino stuck his chin on the top rail of his filthy pen, which he had not been out of in YEARS. He'd apparently put a couple people in hospitals,& was considered unrideable. That poor little man whinnied at me in such a tone of 'help me!', I fell for him instantly. As the rest of the outfit went up to Payson/Mogollon Rim area in the summer, I was at loose ends... Every day I would drive out 30+ minutes to see him, and care for him. Grooming, vet care, proper food, etc. - he got it all. He was SO appreciative! At first, all I could do was lead him out to a nearby wash( dry, sandy, creekbed)& climb on him bareback...he never bucked much, but would bolt. Every day for a month, the same. After he was tired, he'd be fine about being ridden back at a walk to cool off, knowing he was going to get a nice bath and grooming. Eventually, I put a saddle on him. Slowly, the running off lessened,& we began exploring other trails. By the time the rest of the outfit came back in the fall, he was not only beautiful( a striking black and white with a 'loud' blanket) but had become entirely devoted to me. Never needed a halter; he would follow me around like a dog. If he was out in pasture, he would literally come RUNNING and neighing(!) when I called him. He would have jumped off a cliff if I asked him to - and routinely would let me lead a tourist's horse up close enough to a rattlesnake or Gila monster that they could take a good picture. He was my 'bread & butter' for years, even though he was fully 17 when I got him. He would never let anyone else ride him. I kept him for the rest of his long life, living in AZ, CA,& CO. He passed away one winter, in a warm, cleaned-every-day stall, with ample food and clean water, wearing his thick, red woolen horse blanket. Just the day before, we had played together with my dog(a Great Dane- they were buddies)in the snow... Happy and loved, he died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 31, never ill or mistreated ever again. RIP, Poppy, until we meet again!💖💖💖

When I was a kid in the 1990’s I was literally obsessed with horses.
I made a wooden stick pony by stuffing a sock for the head and making the mane out string.
I’d rent out every damn book at the library about horses.
I could tell you still about horses even now being in my 30’s.
But I wanted a horse so damn bad as a kid and every year in the summer we’d go visit my grandpa in Montana.
Well my grandpa knew how badly I wanted one and so with my saved allowance money we went to the auctions.
It was still one of the more traumatizing events of my life. Seeing all the poor old horses rail thin and walking lame. Being only 8 I cried for weeks afterwards because I could only save one.
The horse I chose was a sweet old gelding, a registered quarter horse called Royal Dream. He must of been older than 25 years old. Got him for 200 bucks.
But he would let me ride him and had the sweetest temperament that he was very safe around kids.
I’d shower that horse with love and affection every year I’d come and visit. I’d give so many apples and carrots and would brush and braid his mane.
It was one of my chores to check on the water for the cows and everyday I’d ride royal with just a halter bareback out in the pastures.
He changed from skin and bones to fat and spoiled within a year.
I got to have him for about 4 years before he passed away.
    I’ll never forget Royal Dream.
It haunts me I couldn’t save em all but at least I could save one.

I'd say the next thing to do is to get horse blankets/coverings for these precious babies so they aren't out in the rain while waiting on intake. ♥ Some of the horses coming in need that insulation as they don't have the weight on them to keep warm. Could you all throw some up on your amazon wish list? Keep up the great work!

    • @turnxnxburn
      @turnxnxburn Před 2 lety +14

Thats understandable. As for Coverings - as in an awning or a shelter of some form that keeps the rain at bay so they are not standing out in it.

We had a colt when I was a kid that was blinded in one eye. He was fine as long as you approached him from his sighted side. We kept him out of the big pasture and he was very gentle. I rode him when I was 6 and 7. He was a loving gelding that came to us with his mother as a 6 month old colt. Just always approach from the sighted side and talk to them to let them know you are coming to them.

Both great personalities and make the show a bit more lighthearted and fun. The whole team is amazing you guys all work so great together and know exactly what needs to be done, EVERY SINGLE RESCUE should be run the same way, VERY efficient and effective.
