Above the front windows of Motown Records' Detroit headquarters was a sign that read "Hitsville U.S.A." Placed there by Motown founder Berry Gordy soon after his company moved into the modest home at 2648 W. Grand Blvd, the sign demonstrated Gordy's blazing - and at the time, unearned - arrogance. Then the slogan came true.
Founded on Jan. 12, 1959, Motown quickly became another Detroit factory; where the Big Three produced automobiles, Motown assembled the soul and pop classics that changed America. There's no hyperbole in that statement. Arriving at the height of the civil rights movement, Motown was a black-owned, black-centered business that gave white America something they just could not get enough of - joyous, sad, romantic, mad, groovin', movin' music. (See an audio slideshow of five of Motown's best tunes.)
A former boxer and automobile worker, Berry Gordy was a nascent songwriter when, at the urging of Smokey Robinson, a songwriter ten years younger than Gordy, he decided to establish Motown Records. The two had become friends years earlier and Robinson, who was the lead singer of a band called The Miracles, produced, wrote, and sang several of Motown's most memorable hits - including the labels' first smash song, "Shop Around" in 1960. A year later, "Please Mr. Postman," by The Marvelettes, was the label's first No. 1 song. It would not be the last.
Over the next decade, the sheer number of chart-topping artists, musicians, and groups produced by Motown defied comprehension: Martha and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye. All became part of what would come to be known as the Motown Sound. It is rumored that Gordy modeled his hit factory after the Detroit car assembly line that he knew so well: Make a good product, then make something similar, and make it quick. Over here were the songwriters - Robinson and the team of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Brian Holland (Holland-Dozier, Holland, or H-D-H). Over there was the talent - Stevie Wonder, whom the label discovered when he was 11; Marvin Gaye, who wanted so much to be a jazz crooner before he came into his own in the late 60's; and, above all, Diana Ross, whom the label put its stake in early on, and who was told so many times that she was a star that she drove off one of the Supremes before quitting to launch a solo career. In a neglected corner were the session musicians the Funk Brothers, who played on God knows how many hit songs. Let's just say a lot.
Throughout the Sixties, Motown produced a catalog of songs that cannot be rivaled. "You've Really Got a Hold On Me," "Heat Wave," "Dancing in the Street," "Tracks of My Tears," "Where Did Our Love Go," "My Guy," "My Girl," "Baby Love," "Reach Out, I'll Be There," "I Can't Help Myself," "Get Ready," "Stop! In the Name of Love," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and so on. They were simple love songs that told simple stories, often in joyously happy or heartbreakingly sad ways. And all the while Motown was the pride of Detroit and the pride of black America (though Gordy tried, with his usual bluster, to make it the "Sound of Young America," a label he began to stamp on all of the company's vinyl).
Around the time of the '67 Detroit riots, however, things changed, as they eventually had to. Gordy looked west, towards Los Angeles (how could such a large entertainment company as his not be involved in movies and television?). Dissatisfied with the increasing disconnect between the success of their work and the level of their pay, Holland-Dozier-Holland broke off from Motown. And while the Jackson 5 was on the rise, most of the rock-steady Motown acts of the early '60s were on the wane. In 1971, though, the label released what is arguably its grandest artistic statement, something not at all of a piece with its previous, poppy output. Marvin Gaye put out What's Going On, a thoughtful, socially conscious album whose title track Gordy famously called the worst song he had ever heard. A year later, Motown deserted Detroit for L.A. and Stevie Wonder turned 21, thereby taking creative control of his music. Within four years he had released Talking Book, Innervisions, and Songs in the Key of Life. - Zábava
I’m a retired celebrity hairstylist. All of the Motown singers and other celebrities got their hair done by us, including Smoky and his wife Claudette. Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Jackson Five, and the list goes on. Amazing times! Seventies and 80’s 😌💙💙 “Clifford’s Salon” West Hollywood California.
Wow! You all did great work.👍👊🙏❤️🦅🇺🇸
Wow that's incredible
Incroyable
Thanks so much for sharing, Simone. Really amazing!
That's awesome I'm sure you loved your job
Idk why it happened, but when I was a child my family went to see Smokey Robinson with front row seats. My mother, and Aunts brought him roses and he invited the family backstage. That was the beginning of a crazy childhood for me and my cousins. Smokey became friends with the family. Vip to all concerts on the east coast, flew us out to his mansion in LA numerous times. Threw birthday parties for me and my cousins on stage at his concerts and we met and hung out with all the greats of motown. It was really pretty crazy. It's been a few years, I am 43 now and my cousins older, since speaking with Smokey, but I have to say that him and Berry Gordy are really good people, and treated my family(white family) like family for many years. We actually just found all the pictures of my 10th "Cruisin" (favorite Smokey song), on stage the other day.
Wow that sounds so awesome and fun.
@@kathy1001 for 9 years my partner, at work, always used to laugh at me and say that I was joking. Although I know deep down he was just messing with me, and then my mother found those pictures of the cruisin(song) 10th birthday cake/party on stage at a concert and I finally got to show him. He said that it was a Smokey Robinson wax figure on a stage. Lol, again just messing around. That day was 3 decades ago and it has been about 5 years since I, or my family have spoken to him or Berry unfortunately, don't know why. But growing up it definitely was a fun childhood experience.

That’s amazing thank you for sharing that !
@@SCOTTONTAPE anytime man. Although that was basically the extent of my celebrity experience in life. Lol. The best experience to me, aside from the birthday on stage, was actually my cousins and me sitting with Whitney Houston front row at an outdoor Frank Sinatra concert in Ballys Grand Atlantic City(gone now) and actually meeting Frank for just a few minutes after the concert. I am Italian, lol.
I'm forever in awe of Detroit for the amount of soul artists it churned out over the years, both solo & groups. The list is just phenomenal!
I’m from Detroit still live here I’m also a upcoming artist
I think it was because the label was there. There were a lot of talented folks out of Philly too.
@@momoftwins8440 That's a point, but if u could do an online research of musicians who were either born or raised in Detroit u would be surprised at the numbers. I rate Philly as Detroit's biggest rival
Just think about the Detroit artist who WERE NOT a part of Motown.

Without Motown we might not have heard of Michael Jackson and other big names.. Thanks for the video Scotty aka Motown Money!

The Supremes,
Diana Ross as a solo artist,
The Temptations,
Marvin Gaye,
Smokey Robinson with
the Miracles and solo,
The Four Tops,
Stevie Wonder,

Good job Scott! That whole neighborhood where Marvin is full of celebrity homes. Aaliyha, Big Sean, Francis Capolla, Jerry Bruckheimer, most of the Four Tops, Proof of D12, Swifty of D12, Uncle Sam, Holland and Dozier, The Winans, Clark Sisters, Barry Hankerson, Eddie Kendricks, Wilson Pickett and many more all in walking distance from Marvin house.
Awesome send me those addresses!!
@@SCOTTONTAPE Motown money your a cool dude I was born in Detroit and you're making me even more prouder of where I'm from thanks for this wonderful video bro Motown money in effect!!! :)
Please keep Motown alive it's the best music ever I listen regularly to all the great artists
Since you filmed this a lot has happened at the Motown Museum. There is a multi-million dollar expansion going on. It is going to be fabulous. Thanks for your positive vibes about Detroit.
So many classics came out of Motown Records. Just a buncha timeless music.
What a great era for music. Reminds me of the golden age of Hollywood around the same time. Just imagine how good the music and food would have been at those parties at the mansion. Great job, Motown Money! ✌️🎙️
Add the hair and clothes to that
I did a home inspection in Detroit last year across the street from a lady claiming to be Aretha Franklin's best friend. She could've been. Or she was just some lady standing on the porch to the house I was working on that she didn't live in while dressed in her robe and slippers at 11 am. Either way, totally entertaining
😩😆😂🤣🤦🏾♀️Great story!!!
I love Motown, brings back so many good memories. We had this small record store down the street called The Experience, and I would go there with my older sister to buy 45 records. They would always play some great music in there, usually Motown. Early 1970s, my best friend (who only owned two albums at the time), would ask me do you want to listen to the Osmonds or the Jackson 5, we would look at each other and say, the Jackson 5 😁
I remember in 1977 when I was 16 and my cousin lived on Boston Blvd in Detroit and I attended her house parties. A time when house parties were safe and fun!
Thanks Scott for some of the Detroit/Motown history. 🥰
I read a story last year about the new owners of the Berry Gordy mansion. The guys who bought it moved from San Francisco and got it for 1.65 million dollars. The real estate market in Detroit was really depressed and they got a real bargain. They said photos and paintings that belonged to Berry were left in the house and one is of him with Michael Jackson and it's still hanging in the pool house.Awesome video.. Thanks for sharing.
Never understood people leaving pictures and items behind in a home that's for sale. I've seen homes where it looks like the people moved in the middle of the night and just left everything!!!
@@momoftwins8440
They use the old house as a dumpster. In Berry Gordy's case he still owned the home after he and Motown relocated to California and the pictures were still in the home. A lady in Detroit reached out to him about selling her the house which he agreed to do. And the Motown items stayed with the house.
@@momoftwins8440
When Berry Gordy moved to California he didn't put the house up for sale so items were left with it. He owed it for years and just never bothered to take his belongings out
@@Rockzilla404 It's easy to forget about things you own if you never see them. Especially when your older. I was going through boxes that I haven't been through in years and I was surprised I had forgotten what I had put away. My treasures.

It really feels good when you see those things. It's like seeing an old friend or a long lost relative.
This deserves a part 2, 3 and 4 etc. Nice job!
Brings back a lot of fond memories for this Ex-Detroiter.
These homes are beautiful. Can you imagine the bloox, sweat and tears these homes. Ould show if walls could talk ...
Don't forget that Motown moved to a building that was torn down long ago. Many of the buildings on West Grand Blvd. were rented by various artists and company employees, but Gordy never owned Cole Funeral Home, which is a 100-year-old family business and one of the oldest Black-owned businesses in the state.
MOTOWN!! Some of my fav stuff Scott! It never gets old to me, it’s classic. Loved this, as always well done and a huge Thank-you!!!! Yoooo kid rock….go buy this building and do something with it!!! Lol Loved all the song references you used!
Do a part 2 this was great!
Funny how one little thing can open the memory bank. The opening, when your dialing in the station really got me...lol. Great job as usual, Scott
Brings back good memories of actually great music. Motown was and always be the home of Motown music and history. Thank you, Scott!!
🕊️🙏❤️
I grew up around this area attended Mumford high School. I just turned 59 September 15th. Although I'm not the same age as they are, I grew up listening to their music

MOTOWN !!!!!!
I had tons of 45’s of these famous Artist !!
I’m now 60 yrs old .. but all my 45’s r at my parents home … still to day along with my stereo !
I have been a huge Motown fan my entire life. My dad would always play me Diana Ross and the supremes. Who are probably my favorite Motown artists. I was lucky enough to visit here back in November 2021. It was during the expansion so a fence was up and we couldn’t go up to steps and get close but just being there was very special to me. Fun fact my grandma was also named Martha Reeves when she married my grandfather. There’s just so much to love and appreciate about Motown. All the artists voices were very powerful to listen to. Great video Motown Money!!
When I say I was here in Nov 2021 I do mean visiting the Motown museum aka Hitsville USA! :) it would be awesome to visit some of the artists homes as well. The Barry Gordy mansion is beautiful.
Thank you so much Jordan!
I Love Motown, youngest of 7 and grew up listening to 45s my brothers and sister would dance to. I know how hard their lives ended and miss those days, music will never die!
Motown was fantastic! Such great music and great musicians!
Thank you so much Scott for telling about motown. It's a great story. Now I know things I didn't know before.💞
Yeah Marvin Gaye was married at one time to Anna Gordy in the early 1960's Barry Gordy's eldest Sister.
Back in the day, Me and my folks would go to Detroit, Too see a lot of the Motown stars homes back in the day. it was pretty cool and then we moved here to Central Florida 41 years ago. And i miss those days.
You nailed it again Scott. Awesome video, Motown will always be Motown. The first time I ever heard of that name was through Michael Jackson's fame. I never thought someone would do a video on this and it had to be you. Thank you Scott. This was one amazing video I enjoyed.
Another great video,Scott.
Thank you so much for your hard work putting this together.
Wow, what a great video! I must confess that I didn’t know about the other recording studio. I’d watch your 3 hour version of the homes tour! Keep em coming! Thanks!
Motown gave us great musicians and music, I am so grateful that I was born in 1962, as I grew up with so many of songs from Motown. I listen to the Motown channel on the radio, dangerous while driving as I start dancing in my car! :-)
Thank you Scott for bringing back so many wonderful memories! ❤️
Another killer vlid Scott. My dad owned a bunch of bars, in Detroit and Windsor. (CHAPEAU VERTE,CAFE AVION ROUGE AND THE MEETING PLACE) And my mom owned a chain of beauty and barbershop, on both Detroit and Windsor, called Mary Jane's on Murray Hill. They were both really tight, with Aretha, the Tops, Tempts and Marvin Gaye. Cheers from SpoCanada.

A friend of mine that's no longer with us was a teacher's assistant at the Michigan School for the Blind when Stevie Wonder was a student. Stevland Hardaway Morris was born 1 1/2 months premature in Saginaw, Michigan on May 13, 1950. Due to his premature birth, his eyes weren't fully developed, and the high oxygen level in the incubator caused his retinas to detach resulting in his lifelong blindness. He signed with Motown Records in 1961 at the age of 11.

THIS TUESDAY TURNING 18🔥🔥🔥
Love these Detroit videos!! I'm glad things are improving there. I've never been, but always heard it was bad.
Been here all my life. It's getting better but not quick enough.
@BohemianPrincess it has always been bad and it's NOT on a comeback. I had to laugh at the man filming this saying while panning the camera around Brewster projects area, that junk has been left there for decades. Motown will always be the best music to me, but there are certain blocks that still have nice houses, your kids can't attend public school and you may get car jacked. But he's right, (a few) old houses on Outer dr, Boston Edison district, (maybe ) Palmer Park, Sherwood Forest where homes are big and always costly still exist. But the blight and crime surrounding them not livable to me. And yes I have been inside some of them. The person who bought Berry Gordys mansion better stay there forever, because I cannot foresee in the near future that home selling for a profit. Just giving you honesty.
Mannnn I just truly love your videos..they make me feel as if I’m there touring with you!! ❤️❤️
