  • One of Arizona's best camping getaways - especially in the Summer when temperatures start to climb is Big Lake, Arizona - sitting at 9,000 ft. and a few hours drive from Phoenix, it truly is Arizona's Summer Paradise! Be sure to watch the whole video so you don't miss the information at the end on how to find Big Lake and the location of dispersed camping areas!

Does this place get packed with people during the summer? Last time we tried to head up north we couldn't find a good place to camp because there are so many people in Arizona now.

The designated camp areas will fill up - especially weekends. If you’re looking for popular campgrounds reserve ahead of time (5-6 months) or go mid-week / that’s why we like the dispersed camp areas so much. More room, generally quieter but you won’t have the extras like campgrounds have (pavement, tables, restrooms etc.) but we’ve never had a problem finding a camp spot that way😉

So which way on your way up have more gradual inclines? 60 or 260?

We have always gone up through Payson (87) then 260 through Heber then Show Low etc. Haven’t taken the 60 in years but remember it being a very pretty drive but slower overall due to mountain roads… if you’re pulling a load I would ask around first about taking the 60.
