  • It's time to give you a tour around the Tesla powered Land Rover Series 2A.
It's been beautifully restored to a stunning finish as well as some choice upgrades likes disc brakes and power steering. Drivetrain is now all Tesla, with a 70kWh battery pack and a Model 3 motor. Interior has been retrimmed by www.awesomeclassicandcustom.com with some gorgeous soft Napa leather. Dials are kept minimalistic and analog, in keeping with the classic interior of the Series 2A.
Yes, it can ford rivers. Yes, it can tow a trailer. On road or off road, it's been improved in every way.

Series 2A, because it's close to the original concept whilst having decent weather protection. The Defender is arguably more comfortable, but if you're using it as an agricultural vehicle, then hose-down cleanability is more of a priority.

Would love another chance to drive either a IIA or a Defender - the only time I've driven a IIA was the first vehicle I ever drove.... after spotting a farmer who had been chainsawing a big old oak and managed to trap his leg, crushing it between the horizontal trunk and a 4ft thick branch in the middle of nowhere - after running a mile and a half to the nearest pub (mobile phones were only for Yuppies, Ministers of the Realm and Detective Chief Inspectors in those days!) I ran back and met up with the ambulance crew who asked if I would drive them and the stretcher across the field to the farmer in his own Series IIA --- still the only Landy I've ever driven sadly, though I've been a passenger in a few and a nearby neighbour has the oldest roadworthy original (it's a beaut and tiny - so small at 80 inches you could almost cuddle it!)

Series 1 is my fave. Helped convert a series 1 with side valve engine, to a 3.9 litre V8 with custom transfer box. Before we converted it drove it around manchester and over to huddersfield and loved it. Would love to convert it to electric now. One thing I have noticed about all these conversions, there is no sound generator below 20mph. Thought the law states electric cars must produce a sound below 20mph, to warn other pedestrians (like blind people and elderly) and animals that they are there. Nice series 2a thoe.

Farm holidays as kids leave us with sense of invincibility from ability to "go anywhere" in our first rides in 4x4. An old clunky S.II or Defender makes little odds - just passing on the experience to young 'un's is important. Diamond level work there Richard. Big tip o' the hat Sir!

The series 2A was the best! I waas about 7years old when I saw my first Land Rover (circa 1950) and thought then what a fantastic thing!! It was to be 25 years before I could afford one, a 1961 Series II SWB - what a machine! An addition of twins to the family meant that we needed something a bit bigger and in 1981 we bought a 1964 Series IIA LWB Safari and kept it for thirteen years - another great vehicle. Your conversions are a joy to behold - thanks for the videos.

Was obsessed with Land Rovers as a kid, finally got a 2A at 19 and while I was getting it roadworthy (Nissan hut for a year) My mate got hold of a damaged 90 - diesel and put the immaculate v8 he had in his Series 3 in it and built the perfect v8 90. Other friends had been running modified Range Rover chassis under Land Rover bodies for years.
Coil springs and disc brakes are what made the Range Rover so perfect. Could never go back to cart springs and drums!
Hate with a passion the whole "Defender" marketing rebrand. They were 90's and 110's. Now EVERY Land Rover gets called a "Defender" by the uninformed based on the shape!

Not that it should bother anyone with a 70kWh battery, but that CCS connector underneath the old fuel cap will only be suitable [at fastest speed] for Type 2 charging [anything between 7-22kW]. Now if we, in the UK, adopt the NACs [yes, the classic Tesla] connector we could have rapid charging in that confined plug space. Just saying.

Great videos but I have a question and maybe a challenge. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and would love to go electric but as far as I can tell there is nothing made that would work. I live in Canada and we get 3 months with temperatures between -10 and -20 so lots of power is needed to heat the interior and keep the batteries warm. We also live 80km from the nearest small town so need a 'daily driving' range of about 100km under winter conditions. Our nearest sizable city is a bit over 1000km which is well beyond the current practical range. Even with a lunch stop and fast charge that would require a massive battery pack. My ideal solution would seem to be an electric range of about 150km plus a range extender that would provide enough power to cruise at highway speeds. According to Jeep their hybrid electric version uses about 1/2kw/hr per km (35km on a 17hr pack) so that would suggest a battery pack of around 75kw/hr plus the extra power for winter driving so around 100kw/hr and an onboard charger, gas or diesel that gives around 1.5kw at 220v. That is basically a portable genset! But built in so it runs safely. Have you ever considered something on these lines?
