Turn on AssistiveTouch
Customise Top Level Menu
select + icon
add volume Up
Done
again select + icon
add Volume Down
Done
press home button
select AssistiveTouch symbol
continuously select volume up & down in AssistiveTouch menu
now press side volume keys
hurray now your speaker sounds will work

I'm happy to report that this worked on my IPad ( IPadOS 14.4 ) about 4 years old. The headphones worked and Bluetooth worked but the normal sound didn't. Somehow this toggling the Vol Up / Down and the Volume buttons did the trick in getting out of Headphone sound only mode. THANKS :)
