Anybody else look forward to SMA's videos like Saturday mourning cartoons or is just me?
Always raises my spirits when there's a new SMA video. Although when they're a multiparter it's like when some of my favorite TV shows (NCIS etc.) ended the season with a cliffhanger. "NO! I can't wait! I need closure!"

"Half PT Cruiser, half Dodge Intrepid" made me laugh, so accurate. I'm surprised I've never thought of that before.
Not exactly correct. The powertrain is for the Dodge intrepid although I believe it's a bit tweaked.
The chassis on the other hand is absolutely unique and was custom designed, it doesn't share anything with any other Chrysler product. Check out "car wizards" CZcams channel, he had one in the shop up on a lift so you can see underneath of it. Pretty interesting and unique design. Always thought it was unfortunate they threw a V6 in it rather than do something more cool. Although apparently you can throw a supercharger on one and make it pretty damn fast
The hood makes me think of a PT
@@kens97sto171 thank god its unique. I have seen one in 1998 in the usa and i thought you guys were crazy. Then the pt cruiser convertible came along. And that even were sold to the netherlands.

They definitely hampered it by a not so fantastic powertrain.
The chassis is actually pretty nice.. they spent a bunch of money developing it. Then killed it. Pretty normal dumb stuff.
The Car Wizard CZcams channel has a nice video about the prowler.
@@kens97sto171 The chassis was definitely one of their strong points. Unfortunately they had to rob the Chrysler parts bin for most of the drivetrain, and a lot of the interior bits. Not sure if this was a beancounter decision or not. I'd like to think the Chrysler engineers on that project would have come up with something better...
SMA, smoking the dealer mechanics left and right. Love it.
Their flowchart went right to replacing the vehicle!

First thing I do when a sma video starts is thumbs up! Cuz I know it's going to be good..
The Prowler made it to production primarily for two reasons: 1. a fun bit of fan service for customers; but mostly 2. a creative exercise for Chrysler's workforce in learning the nuances of automotive construction heavily utilizing aluminium. Aside from some trim pieces most of the things that weren't custom aluminium were pulled from the Chrysler parts bin so most mechanical bits are the same as those in other period vehicles; it's not too hard to keep the basic drivetrain running if you figure out how to cross-reference parts from other models.
I was seriously thinking that hat was going to break. I was squinting and holding my breath. Like anyone who enjoys and appreciates Eric’s diagnostic skills and ability to fix what needs fixing, I really like that Eric always confirms the fix before giving the vehicle back to the customer. Anyone who has Eric work on their vehicle is in REALLY good hands.

Last time I did a sealing nut like that I hammered a couple of nails through some scrap wood to suit the diameter, cut the tips off and then used some fencing wire to tension the nails onto the nut. I used to fix main battle tanks in the British army so it’s all improvise, adapt and overcome.

When a tech is willing to work on your 22 year old car, pay him for every hour he puts in! Great work, Eric.
Most techs out of a dealer should be willing to work on your 22yo cars. Maybe not in the rust belt but if your out of the rust belt cars last a long time and those cars can pay a techs rent.
I think paying for every hour is pretty much the norm?

Mr and Mrs O make squeaky sounds on CZcams :) i love it 👍
Dealer more or less said “just deal with it”, this is why SMA has so many customers. More than likely the dealer just didn’t want to deal with finding the parts.
Or were clueless!?
is it still a surprise that dealers want you to buy a new vehicle? on top of that, set you up with a loan! they make their money by being loan sharks, if everyone saved and bought in cash or bank checks directly...
I think Chrysler dealers don’t want to work on anything built under Damlier. Just try to get a Chrysler Crossfire fixed these days.

i love it when car companies put access panels to get access to the pumps, that seemed like a job i can see myself doing, much better than dropping the tank
My old (1997) car all you do is flip up the seat and there's the fuel tank and pump staring you in the face. Even has latches for doing so instead of being bolted in.
It was a rather anticlimactic job. Lol.
My old pickup doesn't even have a pump in the tank(s). It's a mechanical one bolted to the side of the motor and runs off the camshaft.
Glad to hear you reference uncle bumblefudge. I appreciate both of ya equal. Tighten til ya hear a click, then back a 1/4 turn. 👍

Napa should’ve sponsored your shop by now Sir. You always get your parts from them, and fix your customers’ vehicles with them. I think it’s fair that they return the favor after so many years of wonderful videos, repairs, and fixes, and sponsor you.

@@throttlebottle5906 yep!🤣
At least they were smart enough to have panel access to the pump.
I wish GM had that commonsense in the 90s and 2000s with their line of cars and trucks
@@sergeantspeed5941 I have a 2001 Mazda Trubute with panel access. Saves a bunch of work and money.
If they don't come with one, you just cut one into whatever it is. Problen solved.
@@sergeantspeed5941 Its not a common sense issue. Its actually using common sense on their end. They don't want the cars easy to work on for 2 reasons. One, so you bring it back to a dealer. And two, they don't want people who's tool arsenal is a hot glue gun, slip joint pliers and a tiny little hammer "fixing" their vehicles. Especially with something as potentially dangerous as fuel delivery. You get someone who doesn't know their left from their right pulling a fuel system apart with no common sense or fear, it could result in a life changing injury or possibly death. Fuel leaks and fires in vehicles are no laughing matter. Common sense is not that common and stamping your brand on a product and selling it 25-30 years ago and still is today a HUGE liability. Its not just about making you bring it back to fix it, they have to cover their rearends from every possible scenario because the people that ruined it for everybody... They change the tune in their car, over power it and not only wreck the drive train and related components but they get themselves into more power than they can handle and wreck causing injury and damage, then turn around and sue the brands company. Its a shame really. The ones with zero accountability, common sense or responsibility mess themselves and their stuff up and ruin it for the rest of us...

“Is this car fast? Let’s be honest it has the 3.5 in it,”. But but but...... It’s the BIG 3.5
My 76 Toyota wasn't quick but it was fast enough for me to get a speeding ticket for +90mph. I don't recall how BIG its engine was but 93bhp moved that 2300# (car plus 2 people) fast enough.

Engine size does not matter - it's the overall weight of the car, the way the engine placement is balanced, and how the torque is delivered. The original 2000 Ariel Atom only had a 1.8L engine from a Rover, but it goes like hell because only weighs 1,300lb.

If I didn't trust you, I would not be watching your videos. You are one of the few I trust, great videos.
I work at Chrysler dealer and dealt with this same issue last week. The instructions that came with the kit were garbage.
I disassembled the housing, where the pump is located, to find out how to remove the upper hat portion. The tube with the spring has to be pushed down to release it and then the hat portion is rotated back. It is hard to visualize but keeps you from having to remove the hat portion the way you did. My problem was that the new fuel level sensor was a piece of crap. The lever was loose and would not stay in contact with the sensor. I had to use the level sensor from the original pump housing.
This is always how much fun we have working on old crap. I love your creativity.
Neat car even if you aren't a Mopar fan, the basic design was a good one. They created this thing from their better V6 of the day installed into the front end, a setup with the transaxle and front suspension from a front drive sedan mounted in the rear somewhat like many supercars have been done. It ended up with decent weight distribution and was reliable and could be worked on by any competent mechanic in your town USA. The 3.5L V6 was a decent motor, though by today standards it is obviously anemic at best. That guys mistake was letting gas get very old in the fuel tank which tends to cause problems today, due to govt mandated ethanol blends, which are anything but stable and durable, they are intended for short term use only.
Mr. O, I was at corporate in Auburn Hills. MI in the early 2000s working in Corporate Quality of Small Car Platform. Had a Prowler for the weekend to "evaluate". I am really impressed that the plastic fuel pump module parts did not just crumble in you hands given the age of the vehicle. If the sender is still working, I generally take a quick resistance reading for the extremes of travel (empty to full) from the old one and check against the new one to make sure they match. In cycling the key, the fuel pump should be active for 2 to 3 seconds upon key on. So go key on, then wait 4 seconds, go key off, then key on, and repeat 4 times. I have found this is normally enough to pressurize the system of a cold vehicle.
I think it is prudent to change the complete fuel pump module (pump housing and sender) with these older vehicles.

All working. Only took 4 hours to start at the beginning of wiring loom and go through all 80 feet of it as most of it was in a sealed box section, no plug in diagnostic toys, just the eyeballs and Noggin, You seem to be a genuine nice guy looking at the help you've given to people over the years, nice to know you Mr O.

A glutton for punishment, you need a serious career change.
I respect your wife for getting in there and helping you with that stinky electrical connector, her hands must have stunk for hours afterwards. I'll give Chrysler kudos for having an access hatch over the pump, at least you don't have to drop the tank. My wife's Kia fuel pump gave problems twice. Had the fuel pump replaced once and took a look at the old pump, seemed to be a bad electrical connection on the pump inside the tank. Second time it was the electrical connection outside the tank. Fortunately it has an access hatch and I was able to replace the connector myself. It's been running fine since.
