    Young people today probably don't appreciate what a score it was to get to see R rated movies when we were kids in the 70s and early 80s. You had to know somebody whose dad had a VHS video (which were rare and expensive) or you had to sneak in at the movie theater. Maybe you could stay up late to catch a severely edited version on TV. You couldn't just stream it or get it from Amazon. So it was extra special to pull off some caper with your friends to watch something like Phantasm or The Exorcist or The Omen in all its glory. Forbidden fruit tastes twice as sweet!

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 2 lety +1

      Now that is a bloody good summing up! If Super 8 hadn't have cost so much I expect many more of us would have been collecting films back in those glory days. Phantasm was a great cut down (done by a friend who sadly died a couple of years ago) and very special to be able to run over and over again in our little home cinemas. Funny to think it was banned on video owing to the silver sphere blood sucking sequence but available to purchase on Super 8.

    Phantasm is my favorite horror series. I’m in the US but had to buy the original Arrow bluray set with the silver sphere. Well Go released another set this past December which has a beautiful remaster of Phantasm II which for the 1st time was the uncut version (priests death scene is longer, no cut aways) and the telecine wobble is gone. Seen it for the 1st time at my grandparents house when I was 7.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 4 lety

      Keith at Euphoria Pictures told me that he thought a 4K remaster of Phantasm II was released recently in America so now you've answered that one Jay. Thank you. The damnable thing is that I'll have to track down a copy!!! But I don't mind a bit of film weaving because it's all part of the film making process. When opening titles appear and I can see a little movement it confirms to me that a film has been made on film and as far as I'm concerned, that's how films should be made. Having said that, we watched the 4K of Le Mans '66 last Saturday and that one proves, if proof were needed, that good use of video cameras for film making is possible. A near perfect example of movie making in every respect.

  • @ItsTimePictures
    @ItsTimePictures Před 3 lety +1

    I remember watching the original Phantasm on a special edition laserdisc and enjoying it (long time ago so I cannot recall which one). The sound was a huge part of the experience. Years later watched II and III and disliked them both. That was decades ago and it's entirely likely I'd have a different opinion were I able to watch them today.
    My favorite 80's bad sci-fi film is LIFEFORCE, which is easily the most batshit crazy film with a big budget I have ever seen. By the way, the UK Blu-Ray release of that film looks far better than the U.S. release due to superior encoding. There is less macro blocking and far more natural grain structure vs. Shout Factory's disappointing release (which I quickly gave away). I also prefer the original 2.0 Stereo laserdisc audio to the DVD's and Blu-Rays. The 5.1 remixes are not "bad," but there are times when some of the sfx are a bit muffled compared to the original clarity. At times the 5.1 is brilliant so I can live with it. :-)

    I had a similar experience with first viewing of Phantasm. I was 16 in 1980 and there was a local screening where the R/X-rated poster was clumsily changed to a lower rating and so the hall was packed with teenagers. It was the scariest thing I had ever seen. I remember a mate sitting next to me with his feet drawn up onto the chair with his hands over his eyes yelling "what's happening, what's happening!". Never seen it again or any of it sequels but so much of the imagery has stuck with me over 40 years.

      Thank you Lincoln. Super 8 features aren't cheap these days - not that they ever have been - but they are special to be able to screen in the home. Super 8 was a major factor in fuelling my interest in cinema and that interest has never waned. I may not bother going to a cinema to watch videos these days but trips to London to see special films being projected on film are still on the table and I hope to get up there in October for the 70mm release of Death on the Nile and perhaps the 15/70 IMAX of the new Bond film.
      If you haven't come across www.bfcc.biz yet then have a look. We really need to get the film collector conventions resurrected and that was one of the driving reasons for giving this channel a go.

Whenever you get around to doing a 4K vs. 2K you can choose whichever films you want to talk about. Jaws is certainly a good example of 4K and although the Blu-ray is excellent the 4K is perceptibly better but I think it may be the HDR that makes that difference. That's really my conclusion so far but don't let me lead you in that regard because I'm hoping someone comes up with something that I've missed or haven't managed to think of.

    I became a big fan of Phantasm since I first saw it at the show. I think it is wrongly called a horror movie when it should be relegated to the horror/sci-fi genre. I particularly thought that Angus Scrimm was brilliant as the tall man. It still plays well and is cult favorite though a bit cheesy at times such as the brothers fight with the giant bug thing it's probably the cheesiness that attracts and makes it a cult favorite. What a great title for a movie! Enjoy your reviews. Yours and another favorite reviewer on CZcams "Films At Home" are the only two I watch. Have a great day.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, Phantasm was almost a genre of its own so I think you're right Daniel. But the cheesiness is what makes it so appealing. It doesn't take itself seriously like so many other so-called horror films and it also has the advantage of the great relationships between all the lead characters. A great villain too is the final ingredient and why it has endured for so long. Funny to think that I saw this film when it was first released over here. It just doesn't seem like it was that long ago.

      @@shanenewson6032 I'm really pleased to know you like Phantasm III. Such a shame it didn't get a theatrical release upon completion which must have been a really depressing time for the film makers. But they then managed to make Phantasm OblIVion and I really enjoyed that one from the first time I saw it. Having said that, it's different to Phantasm III but the use of outtakes from the 1979 original makes it stand out for me. To have all the main characters appearing as their younger selves but they really are their younger selves has to be fairly unique in film making history. And it sets up the possibility of multiple universes and a never ending story which is what I think Phantasm RaVager is all about. The new box set has a good feel to the packaging and it's nice that each disc is in a slimline case so the whole caboodle fits on the shelf more easily.
      With regards to Damnation Alley, years ago I was at a Derann Film Services open day and they had a full length 16mm 'Scope print of it for £100 but I stupidly didn't buy it. That chewed away at me ever since and then I saw the Blu-ray in the sale at HMV and for £6 we had it on a disc with probably better print and sound quality than that second hand 16mm prin would have offeredt. Previously I'd only ever seen Damnation Alley on the television (panned and scanned and generally crap image quality) and the Super 8 400ft reel I showed in the clamshell case, so to have it now in such wonderful clarity and to see it for the first time properly was wonderful - dodgy optical effects and all. Maybe I'll find an excuse to do a bit of a review of it in a future video when perhaps I'll mention some great discs I've seen lately such as the 4K of Le Mans '66 which we watched on Saturday night and is possibly the second best 4K quality we've seen so far... even though it was shot on video. Almost perfect film making that I've seen hardly any mention of.

How does one get a foot in they door and becomes an employee? A thought, anyone?

      Arrow's 'The Thing' has the correct color palette, as opposed to Scream's release (although it is also very good all in all). I have them both, so that I can watch all the different extras.

For example in casino a car explodes and in the 4K version you see there’s a jump cut which I never noticed on the Blu Ray, the weird thing is I bet I’ll notice it now on the Blu Ray.

Other times the person mastering has overdone the HDR as is the case with 'A Few Good Men' where the softer, more lifelike quality of the 2007 Blu-ray gives an overall better impression. But I remember that car explosion which is when we're made to think Robert De Niro's character has been killed. Can't recall the jump cut though!

    The original PHANTASM is such a remarkable film in many ways, I cannot wait to see a 4K edition, while GEMINI MAN is as unfortunate as you say and just keeps getting worse with age for all kinds of reasons. As for HALLOWEEN 4K, despite the flaws on the older Anchor Bay out-of-print 4K, I still thought it was better than the new 4K, so look forward to seeing what you think on that. Finally, I saw that some of your Super 8 films were on polyester, while in the U.S., most Super 8 films either ready for projection or blank film to use in a camera (save film in Single 8 Fuji cartridges and 3M/Ferrania/K-Mart Super 8 cartridges) were usually acetate. Do you happen to know how many of your non-U.S. Super 8 movies are polyester vs. acetate, roughly?

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před rokem

      There was a shift towards polyester during the second half of the 1970's and it had taken over completely by the mid 1980's. Having said that, some of the features released in Germany during the 1990's/2000's were on old acetate stock that they'd stored in a refrigerator. As that stock got older it developed an increasing yellow tint so can be identified. All the big releases from Derann, Lone Wolf, Kempski and Classic Home Cinema since the mid 80's have been polyester and the USA has moved over to it now. Although not much is coming out these days. Italy seems to be leading a bit of a revival now with a couple of enthusiasts striking Super 8 prints direct from digital video.
      Halloween on Super 8 looks rather colourless but it appeared a close match to the 35mm extract I saw at the NFT so as much as I know Dean Cundey authorized the most recent 4K release, I suspect the earlier release was more like the 35mm general release prints.

Though some polyester film you can shoot now will work (late 3M/Ferrania maybe for color when it used Agfa-like chemistry, much of the Dynachrome was a Kodachrome imitator) the rest can only be developed in black and white because the Fuji Single 8 is extremely difficult to get anything out of (the older color is often Kodachorome-like or Ektachrome EM-25; plus they need an extra step to get the thickest remote off) and you will hardly get results if anything. A few cartridges of Fujipan I shot were a disaster and color was worse, but that's just the way that stock is. Any Fuji with a 'N' after the number is actually E6, despite reports to the contrary, but still tough to get the remote off. 8mm was never really as developed as Super 8 Barry but if I implied that Super 8 was a rival for 35mm then clearly that was not my intention. The image area of Super 8 is only 6mm wide so there is no way you can seriously use that for large scale, serious cinematic distribution. The quality of the late 80s and onwards prints were exceptional and brought cinema quality imagery to many homes. However, we don't tend to have 40 foot screens in our homes so although I may have had projection equipment capable of filling a ten foot wide screen with unrivalled brightness and clarity it would not have worked on the screen at the Odeon Marble Arch or anything like that. But Super 8 had to be seen to be believed at the time. There was nothing else to touch it for the home market.
      It's interesting to learn that Phantasm 2 did well early on. What a shame the success didn't continue because I too think it's a classic and it really did deserve to find a big worldwide audience.
