1UP USA Bike Rack Review | 5 Years later

  • I have had this bike rack for over 5 years now. Many say it is the best bike rack you can get. After buying it 5 years ago and still using it for my adventures, do I agree with hailed word of mouth from other actual customers?
    Note: I am not sponsored by 1UP USA in any way to make this video. I purchased this bike rack with my own money after much research in 2015.
    Here is the actual rack I own and review in this video:
    www.1up-usa.com/product/2in-h...
    This bike rack may seem expensive, well it is, but it is solid and one bike rack you will purchase and never have to purchase again. It stays solid in the hitch and does not move side to side, even in touch road situations.
    Thank you for watching this review.

    You probably don't want the hold down bar contacting the smaller bike's frame. You can adjust the tire spindles lower so they grab on to smaller tires.

      You know, I meant to detail this in the video and forgot to do that. I also meant to discuss that I put a thick towel to keep the paint from coming off. Good comment, I missed that, thanks for bringing this to light. Ride on...

    If you buy the super duty bar $18.00 for 1up quick rack it will convert to a super duty rack allowing up to 75lbs per bike. Check under replacement parts on 1up website.

    Great video. With Covid you can't find an acceptable rack anywhere in Ottawa, Canada. Soldout of 2" ones everywhere. Unless you want a cheapo one. I have a shot at a 5 year old 1 up tomorrow. Hardly used. This review helped with my concern of the age of the rack. Well done and much appreciated from up here in Ottawa.

    I borrowed a buddys rack it was a older Thule, he is pretty hard on things like me and it was in poor condition. I checked out newer Thule reviews and they still had all the same problems like 8 years later.
    Watched some reviews on these 1 ups for confirmation bias and it seems to be the right decision to buy as they are on another level of quality

    I have the 2 bike rack. Best rack available. Note: you make look lighter than it really is the way you hold it on your knees and fold arms in and out. You must be pretty strong.
    I’m ordering two add on,s so I can carry 4 bikes when needed. Total is about 800 for original rack and another 600 for two add ons. Very expensive but worth the money.

  • @rwogmtb-ridingwitholdguy

    I got this rack and love it, I also got the optional addons which are great, I usually have it set up for three bikes but occasionally for four, so I like the ability to adjust based on how many bikes I need to take. With the addons I also added the extended handle to pull the bar making it much easier to tilt when having the addons in place. Wanted to ask though I think I messed up one of the springs and am ordering a replacement, have you experience any issues with any of the springs for the red levers?

    • @travelthenarrowtrail8660
      @travelthenarrowtrail8660  Před 3 lety +2

      First off, thanks for watching. No I haven't seen any issue with the springs. I was rear ended by someone and had to replace one of the pivot bolts, which I got over at Lowe's. Easy fix, but nothing with the springs. The extended handle bar I should just get as I hate squatting down to reach it. Overall great rack though.

    For those who use the two bike setup, is it difficult to put on a heavy bike on the platform closest to the vehicle? I figure with a 2 or even 3 or 4 platform setup, it's really tough to drag a 60lb ebike onto the platform closest to the car, especially with 1, 2, or 3 platforms in your way. How do you do it without a ramp? Do you put it on the farthest platform first and then move it in one at a time wheel at a time?

  • @pxxxbxxx253

    Hi there! Great review! One question: I saw a different written review (and only one thus far) that mentioned being unable to use a conventional locking hitch pin (5/8" diameter) through the receiver and this 1UP rack, because the slot in the post of this rack is too narrow. Is that truly the case? If this reviewer is correct, that is a terrible design flaw! I need to be able to use my AMPLOCK U-HLP58 | 5/8" Hitch Pin Lock to secure something this expensive. The lock you showed that can be put in a vertical position in front of the allen wrench slot looks cheap and easily breakable by a thief. I've had an expensive tow hitch stolen before when using a much cheaper hitch pin --- don't want to do that again! Thanks!

    Good rack overall but not the best for use with fat tire bikes with tires wider than 3.0 inches. There is a kit to add longer spindles to accommodate wider tires but the ramp they sell is only 3.0 inches inside width and if the tires rides along the edge of the ramp then it flips up as there is no way to secure the end of the ramp to the 1up bike rack. Buyers should forget about the 1up bike ramp and buy a wider motorcyle ramp instead.
    The ramp also blocks the license plate holder sold by 1up and putting a motorcycle ramp inside the vehicle avoids this problem. I still needed to add a 4" x 40" x 0.1875 piece of aluminum sheet to provide a way to mount the license plate.

    I just used my new super duty 2" hitch rack. IT REALLY NEEDS A BETTER WAY TO UNLOCK AND SWIVEL. 1up wants you to spend $90 more, on top of the $665-$715, for their extremely poor implementation of a latch and positioning thereof, that allows swinging rack up and down!

    What do you think of this rack if you have a bike with fenders?

    • @travelthenarrowtrail8660
      @travelthenarrowtrail8660  Před 3 lety +2

      It won’t be an issue because the bar that pushes into the tires is not on the tire in the 12 o’clock position, where fenders sit.
      It’s more like the 9-10 o’clock position. Plus, most fenders have about an 1.5 - 2 inches gap over the tires. The bar that touches the tires can also be adjusted lower too so it can hit the tire directly at 9 o’clock spot or for smaller bikes.

      Problem is the Quikr is quite a bit heavier per rack, AND it is spaced even tray to tray. The Equip-D is also like that, hence why I prefer the Super/Heavy duty as it is quite compact.
