First heard Maynard in 1973, I was just learning trumpet, I went home that night trying to figure out how to turn my horn into a lamp. Amazing, and a very down to earth "cool cat" .
This before Stan Mark got fired for not being there for the downbeat of a gig. He told the story where no one woke him up on the bus for the gig. Maynard fired him and told him it was misplaced loyalty.
They played so much better here than they played at the Playboy Jazz Festival in L.A. just a few weeks earlier. It must have been early in the tour for the L.A. gig. Everybody sounds better here, really tight, like they're ready for the studio recording. They could have just taken the recording of the 1982 Montreal Jazz Festival gig, printed it and it would have sold well. Stan Mark on lead trumpet is at his best here, truly legendary.
I always get a kick when I come across a video from this era and see our friend, and daughter's private instructor, from more than 40 years ago! Gotta love seeing the young Nelson Hill and the current one is pretty great too!
Excellent spectacle! Un bon choix de pièces jazz variées et de très bons arrangements. Maynard Ferguson laisse beaucoup de place à son band et les solos des musiciens sont très originaux et créatifs.
The bass player is Matt Bissonette who would later go on to play with the likes of David Lee Roth, Joe Satriani, Ringo Starr and many others. Nice solo at

Maynard Ferguson was fantastic, a true legend in the world of Jazz, his music will never get old.
Let`s not forget Stan Mark. Incredible what he pulled off. Maynard could always attract superb musicians.
Stan Mark's lead playing is superb...
"Hollywood" is so tight that you cant hear anything out of place.
