Absolutely the greatest trumpet player, band leader and performer ever. I saw Maynard dozens of times spread out over many years and he and his band always performed at this level. Never had an off night. There will never be another who even comes close to Maynard!

@@TimmyTechTVDoc’s a great trumpet player. He does his risk-free thing amazingly well. Nothing like Maynard Ferguson, who led an internationally touring big band for decades, was a multi-instrumentalist, innovator, etc. Maynard took risks. Doc played it safe with the Tonight Show band.

By the way, this is how Maynard and the band sounded 6 nites a week in NYC @ The Metropole 3 sets a nite, from 1862-64 so I really was used to hearing this level of music coming from them. It's just really nice that it was captured on film. Jesus, Somewhere and The Italian Suite !

The era of REAL JAZZ! I grew up in that era and loved Maynard and produced 4 concerts with him in the ‘70s. Great musicians!

think you mean 1962+ (*wink*). my father's side of the family played in NYC clubs (all by-ear, various instruments) around the time before he, Buddy Rich & Wally Cox were discovered. my Great Uncle (played with Buddy Rich, trumpet) said of Maynard: "That man is crazy! Those notes he can hit... he's way out there, man!" LOL, to this day, he's still my uncle's obsession (also a professional musician), who has always attempted to climb Ferguson's range, under the tutelage of his uncle (my great uncle) & various jazz trumpet greats.

Some of the best I have seen on video of Maynard, I saw him live dozens of time but this is the Ferguson sound at its best. If you don't watch anything else in this video check out 1:10:08 Maynard play his version of swing low sweet chariot, may be the best 50 seconds of Maynard I have ever heard!!
Bravo to the you Werner! Thanks for sharing!!

Awesome post!! Especially for trumpet players. You can see Maynard's breathing, finger style, and times he leaves the horn on his face awaiting his next line. etc., etc.!!!!! Love it!!

I would have given my left arm to have seen him play at this level. Simply brilliant.
When he came to Britain back in ‘87 (Wigan Pier) he had a bad night but we still screamed and shouted and had a great night. After all, it was Maynard - our hero.

Damn that sax section was tight. I first saw Maynard live about 8 years after this gig. Was completely floored by the power. RIP MF. You are remembered and deeply missed.

Agree with you. Besides Maynard's beyond-belief range on trumpet, his legacy includes bands that were tight as heck. I recall seeing his musicians playing from memory. Incredible.

Some of the most incredible Maynard I've ever heard, and I'd been seeing him starting in 1961 and got to play jazz trumpet with him in 1974/75 and again in 1987 and followed him right up to 2008. I wonder how many more of these incredible films of him exist and are not known to the public. Thank you so much for releasing this.

I hosted the band at Mission Bay HS in the ‘70s and UCSD... were you on the band then? And then in ‘82 in La Jolla on our FB field And promoted it as “Hottest Horn Under The Sun” and drove him to the stage in the back of my Mustang Convertible! Real Kicks!

The great Pete Jackson on piano; his solo on "Watermelon Man" brings to mind his solo on "L-Dopa" on the MF Horn album (released in 1969 in United States; some of the same personnel on that album as here).
