  • For my 213th review, I talk about Robin Thicke's desperate attempt to win back the affections of his ex-wife, how it could have worked, and how it goes disastrously wrong.

    The disappointing part about this album is that the lyrics don't really show his supposed pain. I love when artist are depressed and emotional. I thought I was going to get an Adele or Sam Smith type of album from Robin Thicke, but everything just seems rushed and shallow.

    i think the album is literally for her not for a conceptual success or commercial success, but i agree with most of what you say...He's not really a lyrical guy but he tried. I think the inconsistency represents the confusion and mixed emotions of depression.

    ARTPOP throwback review. and do research, she did all the track by tracks in detail, the album is the 2nd best selling Electronic Dance Album of the year so far, and after everything she's done, more research of the songs, and the leaks, and the explanations have come up. So i vote ARTPOP as the throwback album review choice.

    I love how this album had the potential to recreate the potency of Marvin Gaye's "Hear My Dear" and flat-lined from the start. Robin Thicke has never been a good Songwriter. At all

    Ugh at 1:23 where he does the "SPEAKING AS A FEMINIST..." I couldn't help but roll my eyes. This guy never knows when to stay within ally boundaries as a white dude in the arena of feminist critical analysis of music.. he always totes it as some kind of merit badge he's earned and speaks over women. Heads up cishet white dude: it's not really your place to say what women "blow out of proportion" in terms of attention they give to problematic media- that rick ross song obviously wasn't as culturally relevant as "blurred lines", you didn't hear it everywhere you went. It wasn't playing non stop at clubs, it wasn't inescapable. The attention Blurred Lines got for being so inherently rape-y and misogynist was a huge stride in mainstream music journalism taking criticism of those kind of messages in pop music seriously. We should be thankful it got blown out of proportion. Please stop putting on your "White male feminist pants" you really aren't good at it. Bad vibes.

      Don't antagonize others because of who they are. You could just as easily have criticized him with your opinion and not having to resort to looking down on him for being a cishet white dude. That shit has nothing to do with what you find as misinformation or an uninformed opinion. That would be similar to me saying 'Ugh, women shouldn't talk shit about fixing cars since it's not their area and they don't know anything about it, meaning they should never try to understand or empathize.' That's an asinine train of thought, right?
      Besides, Robin Thicke really is an idiot.

    • @tiffanyb94
      @tiffanyb94 Před 10 lety

      Just because the Rick Ross lyric wasn't "culturally relevant" doesn't mean that it isn't a lyric that has its problems and people should've been talking about it still.

  • @maalbe987
    @maalbe987 Před 10 lety +2

    I agree, such a trainwreck of an album. Only I think it fails on principle too, basically acting as musical blackmail toward his ex-wife, especially since she's a celebrity & the album's named after her. And in that way I think there's a bit of underhandedness to it. Like you I at least thought the Blurred Lines album was half-decent & had its moments, but after this I have no interest in whatever he does next. I actually managed to get a review out the day of release (Robin Thicke - Paula (ALBUM REVIEW)) & it ended up more of an unscripted rant than a review.

    i find it hilarious that you said "he doesn't have the charisma in his lyrics. like let's say a justin timberlake or an usher" you did research? really?. If you did do research you would know that Robin writes all of his music and produces most of his own material unlike justin who has writers that write for and with him. also you would know that robin has been in the music biz for a long time longer then justin. Robin has written for Christina Aguilera, Brian McKnight, Michael Jackson, and won a grammy for writing on Usher's confession album. so if his lyrics are so bad why is he respected in the music industry as a writer?.
    people compare Justin and Robin but their two different artist Robin is far more talented then Justin when it comes to music. Robin didn't have the luxury of a boyband following that Justin had that propelled him to what he is today.
    Look i like justin he has a place on my ipod,

      He really doesn't have charisma, though. Just because he's written stuff for other artists doesn't make his solo work any good. Justin Timberlake is tons more talented, and The 20/20 Experience proves that. That's the best selling LP of 2013. Sure, Blurred Lines was talked about a lot, but only because it wasn't very good and its messages were shady as all hell. The same goes for this album. I like some of Thicke's earlier material, but it's definitely not as good as Timberlake. He's clearly the superior artist, and has much more credibility than Robin Thicke, who at this point, has "respect" from just about no one.

      Mark Grayson Yes, Robin might be recognized as a writer in the industry but that's not always a good thing for your own album. Most of the time you need others to help you write what you are feeling because you're so into your own head that you can't be creative as usual. Let's be honest, Robin has written more creative songs than what's on this album. I think that's why most people are surprised at the mediocrity. I'm not sure about Robin Thicke being more talented than Justin Timberlake. Just because he had a boy band doesn't mean it makes him any less talented. It actually should mean the exact opposite. Also Usher's Confessions album won a Grammy and not Robin Thicke. Plus Robin only wrote one song for that album.

      "He really doesn't have charisma, though. Just because he's written stuff for other artists doesn't make his solo work any good." I think his fans before the Blurred Lines album would disagree. If you claim you like thicke's earlier work then i question if you really do? because the "Paula" album is right within his wheelhouse. from the album Thicke to Love after war Robin has been consistent with his work. the blurred lines album was the only album he didn't really do much on and it shows. he might have lost respect from you and others but he still has respect from his fellow peers. Look....i like Justin and FutureSex/LoveSounds is one of my favorite albums. i just take issue when someone compares them musically, robin has done it since the age of 16 so it's not even close. again "musically". the 20/20 experience was Justins worst album compared to justified and FutureSex/LoveSounds which is probably his best album. and 20/20 never produced a number one and the 2 of 2 didn't fair any better either. and like i said in the last post he'll always have those fans that has been with him since Nsync and that's a good thing. so whether he has a good album or a bad one they'll be right there to buy it up. Vox just wrote a great article which spectrum pulse should actually read.www.vox.com/2014/7/7/5876825/blurred-lines-not-paula-was-robin-thickes-mistake

    Very funny review :) To improve your presentation: make your videos less busy visually. Get rid of the poster, the cushion, your necklace and the subtitles. Also the 'See more R&B reviews here!' / 'Subscribe to see more!' is rather distracting. You can put those at the end of the video.

    Shows how much that idiot knows. He has a girlfriend and they have been together fir several months. She is a beautiful model. And, I thought Paula was a good album. People just did not like it because it was him.
