Don't work at a pawn shop but different side of the story. I was short on money at one time and my mom had given me her old gas camping stove because she was going to throw it out anyway and knew they go for $15 to $20 so not worth a ton but enough. I knew that they sell for about $30 to $40 so new I would get $15 to $20. So I took it to the local pawn shop and the dumbass they had working there broke it. How you are suppose to get them to put is to lightly pump is to push gas threw it. The dumbass they had working there who got hired because he claimed to be a super camper he tested it by grabbing the plunger and ripped it out. I was furious and demanded a manager immediately. She gave me $80 so that I do not call the cops on her employee. I was furious because the dumbass demanded that I don't know shit about camping and that he is a camping god and everyone knows he is a god and anyone who thinks they know better is a piece shit. A little reality check is that dumbass was a fucking liar and got the job because he is a lying piece of shit and the manager of the place is even dumber because she hired someone clearly unfit for the job. I am not a master hiker but I am a seasoned hiker and camper. I have been on over 20 over night week long back packing trips to the grand canyon alone. The person who has trained me to be knowledgeable in camping and hiking is my father who has hiked every single trail except for 2 trails in the grand canyon. To put that bluntly he has hiked over 3000 to 5000 different trails in the grand canyon. Yea the guy who trained me and taught me how to hike and camp is a grand master. There use to be thousands of trails but there are only about 1000 that are able to be hiked now because the others have been shut down for decades for different reasons and the public is not allowed access to them anymore. I have been on 12 trails that are no longer assessable to the public. I have been on several hundred other hikes as well. I am a seasoned hiker and am in extremely good shape while that dumbass looked like a crack head and acted like one as well. In truth another reason I wanted to get rid of that one my mom gave me is because I will get my dads one which is a far better one eventually and wont sell it. My moms was a generic green while my dad painted his with an awesome tiger on it and that means more than a generic one. Not all people who work at pawn shops are experts and in fact a lot of the time they are complete lying morons. I later found out that the manager got arrested for skimming from the sales and she hired morons so that she would not get caught.

I did the opposite to a guy running a flea market stand once. He had some rare assorted firearms magazines, bayonets, and collector grade loose ammo (trounds/gyros) and was selling the assorted tub for $50. I told him the contents of the tub were worth a few thousand if he took the time to sell it to the right people, and he cried when I gave him the breakdown of what I recognized in the tub and where I would recommend he sell it. He tried to give me a few things for free, but I settled for a free soda and a handshake.
It feels nice having a conscience and making someone else happy.
That guy knows that his business is dependent on the customers. I've heard stories of game shops like that who tried to cheat a customer and went out of business within a couple of months because they lost the trust of the community. Some of the companies they deal with pay attention to their fans and will cut off the shop if they find that they are doing something shady as well. There is a lot of money in that sort of stuff and you risk destroying yourself if you don't respect your customers.
About the fake/cheap rings: I once walked into a shop that had a huge fishbowl behind the counter filled to the brim with cheap engagement rings with a label on it that said "my jar of hearts", and I bit my tongue. The owner had been picking them up for $5 a piece as a consolatory gesture. They weren't for sale, it was his private collection. I loved it.

Never worked at a pawnshop, but I used to check out any local pawn-shop for interesting firearms. Back in the mid '00s I found this really rough looking Colt 1911 for $300. Took it home, cleaned it up, then i decided to do a check on the serial number to see when it was made. It turned out it was made in 1944 and was used by the US military during WW2. Even in poor over all condition it was in I ended up selling it to a collector for 4 times what I paid for it. Some months later I ended up mentioning it to that pawn shop owner and he got really salty that he missed out on that deal.
Probably because most pawn shop owners arent the best at actually doing the research its a quick buck for them

Listening to this, I'd have to assume that in the USA pawn shops are more like second-hand/Cash Generator stores, rather than actual pawn shops. A pawn shop, by definition, is a place where you put something in layaway for cash because times are hard and you then buy it back later, or if it stays beyond the holding time it's sold off at a huge profit for the vendor. I went into one once, for my eighteenth birthday, because no-one had bought me anything (no surprise there). I was hungry, homeless and a student. I'd seen a Claddagh ring in the window and I fell in love with it. The man behind the desk asked me if it was a gift for someone, I said yes. Myself, for my eighteenth birthday. It'll be my only gift. He closed the box and pushed it across the counter and said the words that have stayed with me for the next forty years. Paid in full. There are some beautiful people in those places, and sometimes you need more than food to fill you. Kindness can sustain you for a lifetime.
People often put possessions in hock-or layaway as you put it here in the States. You still have to pay back the loan through a payment plan with interest-or if you don't get the item you loaned to the shop back. But otherwise, you're correct because many people treat pawn shops as a way to get quick cash.
That was the way they started out centuries ago who dealt with the middle class but they evolved to just being a second hand store for the poor that buys and sells stuff as they just don't want to store peoples low value stuff for months. Now days people just deal with payday stores for loans.
I sold my engagement ring to a pawn shop after my ex tried to strangle me. They asked if I wanted to sell or pawn it and gave me prices for each. I don't remember what the difference in price was; I wanted it gone and I knew that before I walked in so I sold it. I didn't get much for it which was fine, it was more the principle of the thing.

I've been working at a pawnshop for 4 years now, and God I hate when I try to pass on someone's stuff, but they try to force me to take them, and I even warn them that if I take it it won't be anything yet they still get surprised when I tell them a low number and always say "I rather throw it on the trash" and I always tell them " go ahead it's where it belongs"

My Mother has a resale shop, I walked in one day to see the entire floor in the check in area, covered in boxes of empty blue wine bottles... I asked, "what's this?" My Mother was so frustrated because a customer had asked to sell her blue glass collection, and my Mother said bring it in. The collection was just the lady's bad drinking habit.
worked for a shop in Tucson we had a guy dump his entire collection on us values at 45k in pokemon , mtg and yugioh cards my boss called his lawyer and they drafted a payment plan my boss paid that man 1,250$ every month for 3 years
I worked part time at a Pawn Shop about 20 years ago, and there was this one year we were seeing a lot of 'Gold Flash' bracelets that people were buying for $200 but that were pewter with gold paint! I had many people get irate and argue that they got them at a jewelry store, and would scream at me, even when I would show them spots where the paint had rubbed off, or that there was no gold marking anywhere!

Another thing people would bitch about was when we had to stop pawning Archery Bows. We were buying every single one we pawned, and the Bow Technology was making them worthless! We couldn't sell what we had so we just had to stop taking them. Ah, and people still wanting to pawn VCRs when DVDs took over.

Technology was one thing that we just had to steer clear of. Every year there was a smaller faster Computer and Phone, so we decided that we just couldn't mess with them.
I remember one time I went with a friend to a pawn shop to sell some old books. Mostly R.L Stein stuff, old and well loved. We didn’t expect to get more than a nickel for the set, but the pawn shop owner flipped through the books, and said “I’ll pay five bucks per book.” We were shocked, and I asked why. She opened to the back of one, and pointed out a drawing on the inside cover. It was my drawing. She loved collecting books with drawings in them, and was paying out of her own pocket for the lot. My friend got like, 60 bucks, and insisted I take half, since I made them “more valuable”. They weren’t even good drawings! I think the pawn shop owner was being nice, since we were both kids.

I worked at a Pawn Shop. This one guy tried to sell a Fireball Island board game. It was missing half of the “fireball” marbles, the jewel, half the player pieces, and bridges (the remaining ones were almost all broken). There was a hole in the mountain range of the board. The idol was broken and couldn’t hold nor properly release the marble “fireballs”. I think he also had a pair of mismatched dice. The box was banged up, even. The guy was mad that we wouldn’t give him anything for it, cussed at us, took the game and left.
The ones with thieves trying to sell things are always funny. If you ever steal something and want to sell it: sit on it for a little bit, and then sell it in a different area.

Story 12 reminded me of working at GameStop. People would bring in their consoles with hundreds of games downloaded and would get upset when I told them that didn’t add any value, and that they get factory reset at the warehouse. Once I had a kid come in with a stack of Titanfall games (the Dollarama next door had just stocked it for $2 each) and I had to tell him that not only is Titanfall trade in only $0.50, we can only take one copy of the game at a time 😂
I was in a bad spot. And needed gas money. I brought my guitar and didn't expect much. Just 20 bucks for gas. Not selling just pawning because I don't like to get rid if stuff that I like. The pawn shop looked up the off brand guitar and offered up 5 dollars. It pissed me off because I wasn't asking for a lot and just wanted a small amount so i could get to work. I never went back.
Quick note: I was a regular at this shop. So they knew me and my current situation.
I'm curious: why there are so many people going to pawn shops expecting to hit a jackpot but always get disappointed when the truth is told? Are people really that gullible for scams or too opportunistic?

Not exactly a pawn-shop story but my wife found an actual copy of the cursed E.T. game for the Atari in one of her grandfather's storage boxes after he passed away. Some years ago an original copy of that game sold for $90K. Sadly though this was about a year _after_ a group of people found a bunch of them in a landfill. So it's not nearly as valuable as they were then. But it's still a neat keep-sake.
i remember buying a copy (cartridge not with box) for super cheap on ebay....and this was before the urban legend that is the landfill was proven true.

I went to pawn a pocket knife one day and the new lady just disrespected me badly on the value of the item. I went to the manager to ask him. He said "no problem" (we have been friend for years).
He gave the item to the same lady and told her to lend $35.00.
She tried to tell him it was worthless but he just looked at her until she did as she was told. Days later I found a broken cellular phone on the sidewalk and brought it to her dropping it repeatedly then picking up the pieces to put it all back together while boasting how valuable it was. One of a kind, top quality, latest technology, massive memory, month long battery life etc.
That broke the ice between us and now we get along nicely.
It is often best to pawn, not sell. The price is the same and always low due to the market. Best to be reasonable making new friends and sharing fond memories.
This just proves the most fundamental truth of capitalism: an object is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

My husband and I used to play magic the gathering when our kids were babies 28-30 years ago when the company used to sponsor tournaments for soldiers overseas. We even had the novels that were centered around the brothers' war. We gave all that stuff to our kids about years ago. We just kept our decks so we could play with them. We had some really valuable older cards... But honestly I just play it to spend time with my kids because I don't understand what all the new cards can do. The game lost me when they introduced sliver cards. I made a rule that you can't use sliver cards so that I could keep playing because I just couldn't get the concept LOL. Behind my back, my husband and the kids play the game the way it's supposed to be played. Hah! I'm pretty sure my kids have sold many of our cards. They also sold my husband's Masters of the universe online and got a pretty good bit of money. Good for them.
Slivers are pretty easy to understand, each have effects on each other that boost each other up for an edge, pretty sure there is an explanation video on them here.

I never worked in a pawn shop but I used to have similar experiences when I owned a used book store.
I had countless people try to sell me Stephen King books with his signature. I had to tell them they aren't worth anything thanks to Stephen King. You see he lives in Maine. There is a bookstore there that if you want him to sign anything, no matter how many, you could leave the books with your address and postage. He'd sign them and the store sent them to you. In other words, he knew people were getting his signature to resell. So he ended up killing the market for his signed books. Pretty smart eh?
I don't do business with pawn shops but have dealt with many used book stores. I have always been mostly happy with my experience. It helps when I know the store buys books at X price of the books new price and sales them at Y price of its new price. I have never felt cheated as I know what I will get selling and pay for when buying before I even walk into the store. Unlike the felling that I'm being cheated at pawn shops as I have to go by what they tell me and they never seem to have an honest look to them.
As for the Steven King signed books they are still used books and should sell the same. As for him signing them I'm sure he charged a fee as he is wasting his time signing the books even if he has another motive to flood the market. And after his death the books may be worth more as he can't sign anymore if only a little as the market is flooded.
People making a big deal over a piece of metal and a rock attached to it to wear on their fingers always makes me laugh.

People often think the listed price of something on ebay is what it's worth, if you want a better idea of what something is worth you gotta look at the SOLD listings, not the overpriced ones no one has bought

The computer fans DO have copper winding in them. Not a lot, but still some. Bash them open and take the cores to a metal recyclers, that's what I do when I accumulate enough windings from old starter motors, alternators, DC motors, etc.
Well even gold buyers sometimes aren't sure if an item is gold or not. I had one scratch a ring to evaluate the scratch, while another one had a spectrometer to analyze the metal. Anyway, I was bummed!
a bit of the opposite with me. this 2005, summer, i was waiting at the airport waiting for my ride, when a guy came up asking if i could spare him some money in exchange for a gold bracelet and a gold chain. i was really hesitant but he said they were 14k gold and he just needed cash to get home. so i handed over 20$ and then another 20$ because he asked before leaving. i was like "ok....now i have some maybe fake gold things" but then a few years later my dad finds the jewelry and asks me where i got these. at the time i was too embarrassed to tell him and said "i have no idea" he shrugs and later finds out at a pawnshop that they were REAL. he said he was able to get like $400ish for both items. i later told him the truth about where i got those and he just laughed and said "his loss, but looks like he really needed to get home" he gave a half the money.
all in all it was SUPER risky looking back.... probably never happen again.
I got a off brand Xbox one controller that can light up it was super high quality back in 2014 or 15 but apparently they stopped selling them and somewhere in 2020 or 2021 I took it to a pawnshop just to get rid of it they gave me $2,000 for it when I bought it for $40
That really makes a lot of sense to me cuz my mom thinks that just because she buys old things that they're worth a s*** ton of f****** money. And they're really pissed we worthless pieces of garbage taking up space in our house. You need to have something special and old in order to be worth money just cuz you got us sewing machine as 200 years old does not make it worth anything. My mother has spent easily thousands of dollars I'm thing she thinks are worth money and are worth far less than she spent. As they get older that we worth more but she's wrong. This has been told her several times. And she still does it, assuming the older the more worth it. Has. This is so far from true I. Can't explain it.
The rule of thumb is things depreciate in value. It's only through rarity or marketable value that they appreciate in value after a period of time.

I'm always worried about collecting for this exact image. I like to collect toys(mainly OG care bears, some recent tmnt toys to wait till I'm much older) but the idea of even 20-40 years down the line, they'll be worthless.
Rn my best in my collection is a old 1980's grams bear with her original shawl...not mint condition sadly(it was given to me when I was 2 sadly,so definitely went through the wash)...but I hope much later down the line it could be worth a little bit

I've got a Red Strike NERF Longshot sitting on my shelf. It's out of box, but it's complete, unmodified, and works. Those things could only be bought from Walmart shelves on Black Friday 2009, and they sell for quite a bit these days, though I have no plans to part with it any time soon.
The guy who brought in the slim PS2 (this was back when the PS2 was still worth a couple hundred new) and when I opened the disk tray The laser lens was destroyed. Like someone had smashed it with a screwdriver. I told his the most I'd give his is ten dollars because it was nothing but parts. He got mad and said he'd ruin my business by telling everyone what a rip off artist I am, so I took a picture of him and the PS2 and said go right ahead and when someone asks, I'll show them this picture and tell them exactly why I "lowballed" him.
Had a guy try to sell me a stereo once, and weed, and bongs, and god knows what else he offered. I was like dude, you really wanna do this in front of a bank? I can see like 5 cameras pointed at us, go away.

#9: Im not surprised girls took the $6000. he said they could get $20,000. but in reality they would need to be sold in auction to possibly get that. so fees and...realisticly they might not get that. sometimes its better to get less (or pay more) for an easier expierence.
they knew the shop would have better means to sell. though i probably wouldve consigned it to them. have them sell for a split of the total income.

Careful with some of the wooden cabinet television sets especially Dumont and RCA sets from the 80s and before can sell for a good price to the right collector but it remains a niche market but steadily growing. I am collecting vintage radio and TV sets slide projector and other retro and vintage electronics. Market Price is climbing and worth keeping an eye on.
I helped a guy I know to retrofit a broken RCA cabinet TV from the 80s (The guts were completely F.U.B.A.R) a few years ago and we turned it into an entertainment center. Mounted a new HD flatscreen TV inside of it and made a molding to bridge the gap and clean up the edges. Also made an access panel on the side to put game consoles in and lined the inside of the box with decent-ish wood and and upgraded the speakers. It looks like it is just one heavy plug coming out the back but it powers a heavy duty power strip.
It was a really nice project and honestly if I can ever find one with the wood in nice condition I'd pay $100 for it (please no offers I don't have time to travel and pick one up)
Story 7 "everyone feels obliged to tell us why they are pawning"
Maybe because you f*cks grill us on the "why" and scrutinize our reasons. Worked in construction and my boss needed to pawn tools to pay us because a clients checks bounced. He had multiples of the same tools. He tried to pawn his sanders, drills, etc and the pawn shop went "nah, these are stolen. Who has multiple drills blah blah blah". They would not accept that he owns a construction company and supplies much of the crew with tools.
I once tried to pawn my wife's ring during covid. The lady accused me of stealing the ring. Saying "if this is your wife's ring, where is she?" and "you're not married, where's your ring?". Well miss nosey yet knows nothing, she's at work and I got laid off because of covid, and my ring was the first the first thing I pawned. Another worker comes out and recognized me from when I pawned my ring and other things. Lady tried to apologize and I said F you for making such assumptions. Never went back.
So that is why we have to give you so much detail.

Yes, I tell people who don't know any better to see if it has a lotus engraved anywhere on it or a chisel mark where the lotus used to be. That's how they can tell if it was a cheap military issued sword or not.
Ill never forget a girl in our friend group ( I didnt bring her into the circle, she was annoying AF) ran up to us all to flash a very, very huge and obviously fake like 10 carat ring that her boyfriend/new fiance gave her. He was on drugs and had no job. We all were just nice about it. Few months later she texted in the group chat that the ring was fake.

I thought most all the coin dealers in Central PA were the crooks until I went in a Pawn Shop yesterday? They take the spot at the bottom of the barrel, moving Car Dealers up on spot? I was a little short on my mortgage payment this month and had some nice diamond and RARE stone men's rings to get a loan on? The guy looked them over carefully and asked "how much do you want for them"? I knew exactly what he was up to but I was dumb enough to tell him? For the three very expensive ring I did not get close to what I needed, a few cents on the dollar of their total value? He said Loan or Purchase is same price? We only buy for the gold value, not the stones? But I could guarantee you if he bought them and resold them they would be back to original value? Just like the coin dealers in Central PA depends on which side of the counter you are determines the value?
Really if I found out my fiance cheated on me and while trying to sell engagement ring (whichis pretty weird as it is a prezent but okay) i found out its also worthless i would thank god that He is such a piece of shit and has found other toys and leave me alone

I'm sorry to say, but unless that ring is a solid gold band with no embellishments, that ring depreciated in value the second the reciept printed. Especially if it's a diamond.
Diamonds begin to break down the second they're dug up because they're no longer under the intense heat and pressure that was required to form them. They start to break down from the inside out.
So if you buy a diamond ring, and immediately try to exchange or resell, it will only be worth a fraction of what you bought it for.
TLDR, gemstone rings, especially diamonds, are not an investment as they break down over time. If you want an investment ring, solid gold/silver bands are the way to go.
