The Easy Book Scanner - an Introduction to this 1000 pages per hour scanner

  • This is is a very inexpensive book scanner. It is easy to make with readily available materials - mainly plastic plumbing pipe. But despite its simplicity, it captures book page images very quickly, and has a fail-proof operation. It is also very kind to the books, and so can be used on rare or valuable books without causing damage.
    The whole unit apart from the plastic platen can be carried in a suitcase. I am working onda revised plastic platen which can then be carried flat.

    Remote control button needs to be integrated as a foot pedal. It would increase overall scan speed and completely eliminates the stop and go problem of reaching/pressing the remote.

    Excellent, industrious bit of work, thanks for your aggregating design for inspiration to others to do more copy work. As a novice copier, I would not have imagined the nibble use of two inexpensive cameras on this great frame work. Well done Andrew.

    You could make a some kind of foot (pedal) trigger for cameras, freeing your hands.

  • @adzer45
    @adzer45 Před 8 lety +9

    Have you considered a foot control for the IR scanner? The signal just might pass through the table. Alternatively you could have some fun with some of the very very cheap microcontrollers on the market to make it happen.
    It could speed you up even further! Even if it only takes 1 second per page-pair it will add up! 1000 pages in an hour is 500 page pairs. Take the 1 second out of those and that's close to 10 minutes saved each hour!

    To make it better, use a raspberry pi with two usb web cameras. You can also integrate a simple usb pedal to click the pics. With a little bit of tinkering, I think the same quality can be obtained using a single camera.

    • @bookscanner3770
      @bookscanner3770 Před 10 lety +4

      The images that come from the scanner are .jpg files. They are not always exactly rectangular if the camera is not perpendicular to the document. You can correct this and make the pictures rectangular by using good free software. There are two very good free software programs - YASW (from SourceForge.net) and ScanTailor. ScanTailor corrects and produces small black/white files (not grayscale).
      You will also need software to batch convert images to pdf. Here is one that I have not tried, but it looks OK.

      Hope this helps you Stanley

      Book Scanner Abby FineReader has automatic image correction feature and it does its job like a charm. This scanner is brilliant! Thanks for sharing. However, I have a question; Two cameras will have two different page sequences consisting of even and odd pages. How would these two groups of files intersect each other in order to create the proper page order? Do you use any software for batch renaming so that two groups of files will in a sequenced order? What is your approach for this?

    • @that1nigglet
      @that1nigglet Před 9 lety

      Book Scanner
      You can print the photos on windows in a batch and to a PDF writer. There's no reason to "convert" them, and they all end up on a PDF file.
      My concern is that you can't really make the the files named "1, 2, 3" when the photo is shot and even if you can, "1,2,3" correspond to pages 1, 3, 5, as the pages alternate. It's not one after the other, it's every other page. You'd have to change the names or at least individually print them to PDF and merge them later with a program that costs money (I don't know any free versions).
      It's a beautiful idea, and wonderfully innovated, truly a job well done!
      But I'll stick to using a scanner.

    • @jcwade
      @jcwade Před 8 lety +2

      You would just take the files from the even camera and use a batch rename in cmd or free software to increment by 2 starting at 2 and the same from 1 incrementing by 2 for the other camera then drag into the same folder and print to pdf.
