Not hard to stay clean with a little care. Wear gloves, lay something down to cover the ground, clean grease and oil off the car as you go.

I had a G reg civic 1.6 16v 130bhp flying machine. It revved forever. Always liked a series 2 RS turbo escort, but the civic was faster on paper and galf the insurance

Probably ~ cos Peugeot couldn’t keep up with supply & demand (back order) for new rear axles failing (wearing through) at beam mount.
