  • Hey everyone, I am here with a winter sowing dilemma that I want you to help me think through. You see I have no germination in over half of my containers and well...that is not gonna work for me. I want ALL. THE. FLOWERS. (and herbs, veggies and etc). So I have a big plan and want your thoughts on both of my topics.

I don't know about the sluggo but spring sowing using the winter sowing method works great. The only thing you have to watch out for is if you get a random hot day and already have sprouts. They will fry. i learned that the hard way.

Hi Kim! After you advised me to get the snail bait, in a previous post, I used it in the containers (sparingly) and around them in my garden bed. I’m in WV, it has been flooding here, I think all the slugs are in my yard trying to stay dry! I also took a terracotta pot and put the bait on the dish, then flipped the pot over so the slugs would crawl in it. I do feel bad killing them, but they are killing my plants! 😢 I also opened the containers and cleaned them up and transplanted a few that were ready to lager pots. I figure I’ll just put them in my garage if it gets cold again or use frost blankets.
Praying it works for you! 🌹 🌺🌸

I would definitely deal with those slugs!! I also think redoing those containers will work especially if you’re going to have them sitting on the concrete. The concrete warming during the day should help speed up that germination process! We are past our last frost date, but we’re still having temps dip into the low 40’s like once a week. I’m ready for that to be gone til next fall😂!! Looking forward to seeing your results!

Hi Kim, I'm in zone 8b Vancouver Canada and i am doing what i call Spring sowing. I figure there are tons of ppl growing under lights still and if my weather is half decently warm why not !!! I have my jugs off of the grass because i was fearful of slugs i think you will have much better luck with yours when you move them. I plan to use slug bait if and when the time comes, you bet !!! Those little.buggers are not going to eat up all my hard work .... so i say GO FOR IT 😅
I'm with you 💯 i say do whatever you have to do to get all the pretty flowers. I'm excited to follow along. You'll do great 🩷🌷🌱🌸🌱

I feel your pain as my winter sowing results were not good this year due to extreme rain ☔️ in my zone this year. I mean 4” of rain somedays. I live in a townhouse and had no place to bring them inside. In hindsight if I monitored precipitation I would have thrown a plastic tarp over them on those days. Fortunately I saved seeds which I plan to direct sow. I was caught off guard because last winter it hardly rained and I had to mist my containers.

Hi Kim. I am going to reuse all the potting mix in my containers that didn’t germinate to refresh my spring/summer containers. I figure that I started way too many different kinds of flowers just because I am over zealous when I start winter sowing in the first place and then get overwhelmed with trying to get all the seedlings that didn’t germinate in the ground in time. I see it as God’s way of minimizing my self inflicted stress. I will note which varieties didn’t germinate and try again next year!🤪
I am Spring sowing in gallon ziplock bags right now so that on warm days I can easily unzip so that my seedlings don’t fry.

I'm in Massachusetts Zone 6A -- I started getting a few slugs as well. I decided to move all my jugs in my greenhouse. I have a large 6ft x 6ft pop-up plastic greenhouse. I put a large tarp on the ground and placed them on that. I don't have shelving in there. I open the windows during the day to vent. Actually, my plants have really taken off and are doing awesome. Some that didn't germinate started to. They are protected from any creatures. I think I'm going to do the same next year. Winter sow start outside in Jan / Feb and put them in the greenhouse when Spring arrives when all the bugs and everything else comes out. I now have 100% germination with every jug I sowed. Not lying. I realize not everyone has a greenhouse but this comment is for you as I see you have one. I'm a first time winter sower this year so i was trying think outside the box to save my plants.

I think it's worth a try with the slug bait. I have to tell you a story about slugs. I live in south west Idaho now and I have no slugs here in my yard but I kind of miss them. We used to live in Oregon outside of Pendleton and I had plenty of slugs. I used to go out at night and hunt for them with a flash light and a spray bottle with vinegar water. Some nights the little grandkids would go with me. That was a fun time and slug hunting became my favorite sport. Some nights I would get up to 100 slugs. I missed that when we moved here, but now I am grateful we don't have slugs. Now it's pill bugs and it's just not the same as hunting slugs.

The "winter sowing" method can be used all year, when just depends on what type of plants you want to germinate. For example some need a very long and warm time to make strong enough roots before fall/winter, so they can be "summer sown" all summer long, and will overwinter as little plants in the bottles, or germinate next spring like normal.
To keep slugs out, you can use fine maze gauze over the opening of the bottle, making sure to push it into the bottle a little bit with your fingertip and secured with elastic or just a little string. That way rain can still get through (drips down from the dent of cloth), slugs etc. can not.
You can also watch out to not have too big holes in the bottom of the bottle. Better more small ones than a few big ones, because that too is a way for little critters to get in.

This was my first go at WS and it has been an awesome adventure! I even tried it with my classes at school...also a great time (salad party is in the works for our end of year celebrations!). I have not had to battle slugs at home although I did put coffee filters in the bottom of my jugs before soil (which I read somewhere may help fend them off from the bottom??) and a fried suggested copper tape at the top where the lid goes. And I am off to spring sow, as well, and will just keep the jugs in a place that isn't full sun since our daytime temps are starting to creep up this week and I wouldn't want to fry seedlings! Anxious to see what results you find!

This is the fourth year I’ve winter sown. I have tried some of the same varieties every year- new and old seeds. Some never germinated the first three years but did germinate this year. Mostly perennial flowers and herbs. They are going great. My tomatoes are doing good. The squash just started germinating. Overall I’d say each year I do about 100+ jugs and 25 don’t germinate. But I still always felt that was better results and easier than trying to start them under grow lights etc. I really think this variation is weather issues. TBD this year yet. I am in Indiana so just too close to winter still. I corral my jugs, I use milk crates. Might camouflage those from your neighbors too.

  • @HillCountryGardenGirl
    @HillCountryGardenGirl Před 5 měsíci +1

Slugs have decimated my seedlings as well and so I sprinkled Sluggo directly on them. Since doing that, I haven’t lost any more seedlings. It does create a white mold that starts to grow on the top when the Sluggo encounters water and starts to break down but my seedlings don’t seem to be affected by it so far.
As for re-sowing your seeds, is it possible that those particular varieties need more warmth to be able to germinate? I know the milk jug creates a greenhouse effect but temperatures quickly drop to the ambient temperature outside after the sun sets. The other possible thing is that those sneaky little slugs and snails ate your seedlings before you ever got to glimpse them. I discovered that they are unfortunately smart enough to find their way in at night and crawl back out before I ever even see them. The last possibility that I can think of is that maybe they stayed too wet and rotted out. I’m guilty of this when I seed start. Those are the only things that I can think of. Hope this helps.

I am so happy to see this post. Yes! The same thing happened to me! Slugs. I moved all my jugs onto my deck, mixed up the soil again and reseeded. Everything is germinating again! And I am diligent about looking for slugs but they don't seem to like to crawl on the deck. So trying again! Good info on letting them get big before I plant them out. I think the slug bait is a great idea but for some reason just mixing up the soil seems to have gotten rid of them. Of course I did spent one afternoon killing them all in a solution of soapy water. Thank you for your content. I have learned so much!

I’m also in Alamance County, and would be very concerned about “cooking” your replanted seeds/seedlings in the closed jugs. Why not just refresh the soil in your jugs, replant with seed, and NOT reseal your jugs? From here on out, heat in the jugs is your challenge way more than avoiding cold temperatures. Just an opinion, but whatever you do I hope you have great success with it!

    • @christiridley1009

I wondered that, too... I know that even here in TN, I try to keep my jugs shielded from all afternoon sun. I think these little jugs heat up a lot with continued sun exposure. The interior of my vehicle heats up so much on just an 80 degree day. I am probably at about that same latitude as y'all. I think you're on to something!

It’s funny, I had the same low germination rate this year, but I was blaming my use of sluggo. Due to slug issues last year, I decided to add a little sluggo when I set up the jugs this past winter. So I was blaming my low germination rate to that stuff being present before anything sprouted. Maybe not, idk. Maybe next year I’ll add a little after things start sprouting..

Yes great idea! This way you will have a second wind of flowers. Slugs; im also against killing things( especially bees), if you’re moving the juge near your home maybe you can spare the slugs? Hose them off ? I’m winter sowing holly hawk that I started a couple days ago. As far as dud seeds( I’m sure you already know this, you’re clearly an experienced gardener), I soak them in water sometimes upto 48hrs. I also score the seeds if they’re old or super dry with hard outer shells. I even dig my dud seeds up and usually get 50% to germ. With soak and scoring. I hope this was helpful, can’t wait to see your garden!!! Can you do a video and show us how your seedlings are doing for identification at home?

I think you babied them to much people live in colder climates than us that it works just fine.mine all sprouted. I had more trouble with the seeds I started in trays. I think you should be able to start them in the jugs whenever. I’d try the slug bait too. I had my jugs on a patio never got any slugs in them. I wonder if it’s because they were sitting in the garden. You’ll probably have to check the moisture since we are getting so hot now.

I read about slugs from another channel so I laid my jugs out on a shower curtain from $Tree and no slugs, just one huge spider under a jug. I took a couple of jugs in my greenhouse and untaped. They are growing crazy. Out of 41 jugs, I have 7 that haven't germinated. I am totally going to spring sow with dahlia seeds, gomphrena, petunias and all the frost sensitive flowers.
