- A complete overhaul of a Sram Force 22 shifter. The process would be the same for any 11 speed Sram Apex, Rival or Red mechanical shifter. The video is pretty detailed and long, so I've included time stamps for each process.

Great video, the fact you left your mistake in actually helped me with my repair! Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback!!!
As an owner of a SRAM Rival, this was very informative to watch. Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
I thank you very much for the insight friend,my shop just tried to sell me a new 200.00 apex hydraulic shifter and I know they didn’t try to clean up the parts anywhere near as thorough as you just did. Now I know I can do it myself so thanks again!
You're welcome!!!
fantastic video Joey!!! I might try to service my shifter after this!!!
You should! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback and good luck!
hey Joey, thanks for this, truly amazing, I´m gonna consider service my shifters after look at your video, it looks "simple", you're a pro.
Outstanding teaching video. Well done Joe.
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback!
Terrific video , extremely informative step by step approach with a successful end point. Travelling in weather like you're experiencing at the moment must surely require increased maintenance on many items. Happy for you in regard to moving to a new house with a garage. Enjoy and take care 👍👍
Thanks, Paul! I appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback!
Awesome! I had no idea SRAM shifters were rebuildable!
They are! Too bad all the small parts aren't available for purchase.
@@JoeyMesa What is available for purchase? As far as I can tell from their parts website, only the lever and pins are available, not any of the rest of the mech?
One of your best videos Joey, and I don't even own any SRAM.
Thanks Philip! I appreciate your feedback and kind words!
Very nice demo, thx :)
Glad you liked it!
This was a very thorough video. Thank you for taking the time to make it, Joey. One question: When threading the cable in, should the lever be in a certain position? Like equivalent to largest rear sprocket--1st gear, or equivalent to smallest, 11th gear? I'm having problems getting the new cable in. It goes in, then gets caught on something further in, does not exit the shifter at the cable hole.
The shift lever should be in the position of the smallest cog in the rear and smallest ring in the front. Same with removing the cable. These are the positions where all the slack is let out of the cable and the hole in the ratchet ring is facing out.
@@JoeyMesa I guess I'm going to take it apart. Something is not right. Perhaps the shifter lever is broken, as you mention this as possibly resulting in not being able to hold on the largest one or two cogs on the rear cassette, and this is what prompted my interest initially.
Do you know where I can find the return spring for the engagement mechanism that is held to the shifter body via the pin and circlip?
Hi Joey, Thx for this great vid. A question for you: i broke 2 or 3 teeth of the internal piece you call the "chip mechanism "- with the red plastic piece where the cable puts in... do you know if this piece - that I couldn't find as spare - is actually the same in other 22 double tap shifters? mine is a red HRD, and I wih to buy a far less expensive second hand rival (no hydro) shifter to collect the part. Would that work? thx again!!
Yes I believe the shift the parts are interchangeable.
Hey, I got the spring that is attached to the shifter body (showing at 18:25) broken, could not remove the pin to get the spring out of there, it there a way to do that? thanks.
Great video. I bought a used force 22 and it came with the cable split out of the red plastic ratchet wheel, grrrr. ratchet is fine. cannot find the plastic replacement part, any idea?
Hi Joey, I've watched most of your force 22 videos and appreciate the content. I'm in the process of building a 1x 12 road bike with either force mechanical utilizing Ratio's ratchet/jockey wheel conversion kit on force 1 type 3.0 rear mech or complete 1x12 force etap axs. Going etap will cost $400 extra and both groupset comes out to 2100g. Can you give an opinion on which system will give better serviceability and longevity say 3-5 years?
I don't have any experience with Ratio's conversion kits, but the concept looks very intriguing. I've used both mechanical and SRAM AXS stuff quite a lot the last few years. My last demo bike had Force AXS components and I never had any issues performance wise. I made a long term video on the bike and my opinions on AXS at that time: czcams.com/video/dijiiKmDkWI/video.html
Other than charging the battery (which I did forget to do a few times), AXS will require less maintenance, is easier to set up, and is easy if you're going to potentially swap between AXS road 12 speed cassettes and Eagle 12 speed cassettes. The Force AXS shifters sync up to any AXS derailleur very easily.
I could see some situations where mechanical shifting would be more advantageous, like a long bike packing cross country adventure or something. My demo bike I have on order has a 1x Force AXS drivetrain with an Eagle 10-52 cassette, But my beater commuter bike is still going strong with the Force 22 shifters set up 1x 11. The Ratio 12 speed conversion ratchet would be a sweet upgrade at some point though.
My answer would be that I don't think you'll go wrong either way, but for the additional $400, I'd lean more towards AXS.
Thanks for the question and feedback!
@@JoeyMesa I appreciate the detailed feedback. I have ordered the Force AXS upgrade kit. Will go with either 44 or 46 1X chainset with 10-33 or 10-36T cassette. Another question, I noticed that on most store websites it'll say medium cage compatible with 10-33 or 10-36 but on Sram's own website it says Force AXS medium cage can be paired with 10-28, 10-33 and 10-36 can you confirm who's giving the correct info?
Hi Joey. I only need to replace the small carbon shift lever (part# 11.7018.005.001) on my Red22. SRAM says you can do this without disassembling anything else than the lever itself. In this video you replace the whole shift lever assembly. Would you do a quick video with your old Force shift lever to show how to disassemble/assemble the paddle ? Thank you
I'll see what I can come up with this weekend. It's a lot less involved than what's in this video, but thanks for the request!
@@JoeyMesa Dont bother. No need to finally. I've been able to install the little C clamp. But your video was instructive enough to get me going. Thank you !!
I wonder, is it possible to add a shift paddle to the left brake lever for my sram apex road brake lever? I want to use it for my dropper post.
Yes, it's possible. You'll just have to acquire the shifter mechanism. I made a video on how to convert a doubletap shifter into a dropper lever: czcams.com/video/_2m77XP-N7g/video.html
Joey, can you tell me if the Sram Apex has adjustable shift force. That is, the force to make the first click? On my shifter, I think it's a little tight for me.
good video informative and slow
Thanks 👍
I don't understand all the Shimano Hype (i think its cause Hambini)... Both Groups not perfect but if you know to handle it Sram is very good and in my opinion better than Shimano...
Very helpful video Thx...
You're welcome!
Good stuff
Thanks man!
Nice video, I have a problem with a broken holding pawl spring my RED 22 shifter, (11:58)
Could you please give me some suggestion about the replacement spring?
Thank
I'm not sure if that's a part that can be purchased from a source that sells Sram parts or whether you would would have to salvage the spring from a used shifter. The assembly comes apart pretty easily with a little C-clip.
Thanks for the question!
@@JoeyMesa Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try to find the custom spring maker shop.
btw I have tried to take out this part, but it not easy.
@@punklo0 Did you have any luck finding a replacement part? Having the same trouble...
@@kevinnooijen6825 sure, luckily i'm in Taiwan, some shops have the replacement parts.
For my case, the replacement spring cost me round 50$.
what if your brake lever isn't wanting to return on it's own
You’ve got some patience. My barrel is slipping out the side of that red wheel. I see yours doesn’t have a slit. My sram force CX1 is spilt at the side and the cable is falling through. It’s a nightmare.
This happened to me, and I could not find the replacement anywhere, Is there a fix for that problem or the shifter should be replaced?
@@markokompic7617 they’ve actually obsoleted the version I have. The only available replacement piston is for the newer version. I ended up buying a new one. I bought the cheaper alloy version and not the very expensive carbon one. The cheap version works fine.
Thank you for this perfekt Video👍
You're very welcome!!!
Is there a way to find a solution about my SRAM rival
The shifter skips and won't shift
Probably you have a problem with the cable retention ring. The end is weak and it can brake. Dismantle it like in the video and buy a second hand shifter to replace the broken part.
Where I can buy replacement for sram rival double tap mine was broken
Did you ever find a source?
😇
Does any way possible we can switch the 10 speed ratchet to 11-speed ratchet
Only if it's the second generation shaped shifter that uses the yawl type front derailleur. The first generation double tap shifter bodies are limited to 10 speed only.
@@JoeyMesa So the 2013 10 speed red will work with any srams 22 ratchet with no mods? Thanks in advance :)
Couldn’t do a video on the axis shifters ? Damaged my left shifter , want to change the lever only red axis hydraulic brakes
Are you talking about the electronic AXS shifters? I've done a few installation videos, but no repair videos because I haven't dealt with a broken one yet.
@@JoeyMesa yes the new axis 12 speed shifters electronic , need to repair the lever
Can’t find that pin hole .. any help ?
Pin hole? Please expand the question. At what point, minute wise, are you having an issue?
I think you shouldn't use lube for such mechanisms, similarly as for locks, never user type of lublicant.
Sorry, but I think you're wrong.
