  • Churchill Square was first built as an open shopping mall., One of the
last in the country. It was started in 1968 and completed in 1972.
above it were office blocks occupied by the Post Office as a regional
centre. In 1996 work started on a new enclosed mall this opened in 1998
and in 2014 the whole front was given a makeover of glass

I remember fainting in that WHSmiths store. I’d just found out I was pregnant the day before, so was looking at baby name books 😆 I was standing there ages, looking, then suddenly started blacking out. They had to get me a chair. My daughter is now 31 next month. Seems like yesterday.

I worked as a labourer on that site in early 98..I was amazed that it was opened in September as they were constantly saying they were behind schedule!

Great video! I met my wife in Spring 98, Brighton became one of our favourite places to go as courting teens :D I vaguely remember the building going on then, I remember heading down to Virgin Megastore a lot where it used to be, then it moved into the new mall. We still love a good trip to Brighton with the kids :)

I worked at GAME there, in 1998. There was so much construction going on. We didn't think they'd open on time. I miss that Borders Starbucks, it was the first one in Brighton wasn't it.

Really nice video document, and I particularly like the mix of music and production sound

My teenage childhood right there. The sights and sounds from that video just took me right back. I remember the Old Churchil Sq ( 50p shop was amazing as a kid)
And i remember the new build. It’s scary to think we’re getting further from the 90s Brighton was a beautiful and special place back then.
Also it was beautiful to hear the Evening Argus man @ 2:03 in the Victorian Imperial Arcade another found memory. 🥲 Nostalgia 🥲

The imperial arcade only has one shop now. It used to be the hairdressers on the corner, now it's a bureau de change.

Amazing, I lived in Brighton at the time and hardly remember any of this, there was the old concrete shopping centre which was dire and then a bright nee Churchill square which seemed to open overnight.

August 2023: in 5 years time this 'new' Churchill Square will be as old as the old one.

Churchill Sq was always hideous and loathed by most Brightonians. I can remember it opening in '68 as a child. They tore down the old fishing quarter - streets of pebble fronted cottages, Georgian churches. They were considered slums then. Each of those tiny 18 century cottages would be worth half a million now. My mother's antecedents were local fisherman and ran the marine stores. They lived in Upper Russell St. Brighton has a terrible record of destroying it's architectural history.

So much historic buildings have gone over the years , to make way for ugly buildings, it stared to change in the early 1960 s , I miss Hanningtons store,

They should not have them repeated same mistake by tearing down a icon to 60/70s. It was very unique. The indoor mall I’ve been to only twice and it was just like a mall anywhere very depressing as all inside. I loved the open plan Churchill Sq.

Wow 1996 seems a long time ago now. I remember the old Square, it was a dead end with shops that couldn't survive on the lower level because no one walked there.
