- The East Sussex seaside resort of Brighton filmed in 1979. Favorite haunt or The prince Regent the brain child behind the Royal Pavilion which he used a Royal Retreat.
The city was a day trippers paradise, with two piers and a small railway that went along the seafront.

memories
I just did a stretch in Brighton studying, working as a kitchen porter, partying.
Strange to see how similar things were before I was even born. We are all just passing through. Peace to all humans
So nice to see the marina like this. What an eyesore it has become.
Her Majesty the Queen officially opened Brighton Marina in May 1979.
I was there with my friend, we stood a few feet away from her as she unveiled the plaque.
Monty Zumazoom family friend was the harbour, aster for many years.
The more you know
I often jumped off the groyne next to the Palace Pier in the early 70s with my friends. Even climbed the pier to jump off it. Great days spending summer days (and there seemed to be more summer days when I was a kid) on the beach next to the said pier.
Back in the 60's and 70's, Brighton was a great place to visit on the train from Crawley. I have so many memories from there. Once into my teens I used to go to the disco's and night clubs there to meet the ladies (I'm currently using my missus' facebook account). I seem to remember one disco was called 'Cherries' and was attached to the Brighton Centre. Among so many girls I now forget, I met a beautiful girl called 'Louise' there who was simply gorgeous but I was stupid enough to let her go. I now live in Queensland Australia and miss the old Brighton more than I could ever say.
Happy to read your memories but the disco was called "Sherrys". (A pedant who still lives in Brighton.)
Was also a great place to live then. It was civilized. And the residents spoke English 👍
I remember that well. I was on tour with the Jam as their photographer. It was my first time in Brighton. First time for some of them, too as I recall. I know that someone insisted that we go down to the water where I was told the tradition was to piss in the sea. They were always having me on. I had just arrived in the UK and everyone enjoyed "taking the piss" out of me. But, at the gig that night, I learned an important escape. When trapped in a crowd, fall backward. It worked! Those were the days!
My mate Gerry at 3.29. he owned the "left handed whelk" in George street. I lived next door, and worked in there, in my school summer holidays. Gerry and his brother Pat, both had seafood places, Pats was under the palace pier. Both Liverpool lads.
This video is from 1979, I was born in '79 and I gave the 79th like!
And not a single person glued to their phone screens. People genuinely enjoying themselves. Happy days.
Nothing changed 😂❤Brighton is unique!
I remember buying a lump of ice with a fly in it from that Tricks and Jokes shop at .38!
back in the day when people sent you a post card rather than broadcasted their holiday on social media
I was 16 then. Lovely to see the Palace Pier as it was, the West Pier at least still standing and the marina before ASDA. Happy days. What is the music for this clip
The music is called Trips, by Mohr & Alex Elena (Better late than never)
@@mikeypeters7003 well done Mikey!
What a shame Brighton is such a mess now in 2020
Apparently its brilliant place to live now🤮🤮
It was more of a mess in the 70s 😂
Lived in brighton all my life, today its just different not a mess,
Men have be carefull when doing their shoelaces up.
@@bertiewooster3326 no room for homophobia here
it seems a little earlier than 79 to me - when people say the place was dirtier and seedier then, cracks me up.. that was the real brighton before it was fucked up and turned into a student town - just walk up lewes road north of the level now - total fuck up - the council officers/politicians responsible should be flogged mercilessly with the cat
Please send me back in your time machine. this was my playground at the time. I was 19!
Lovely. Brighton at its best then .... just before Thatcher. The music gives a nice dream feel.
Royal Albion Hotel, I worked there 41 years ago
Half Western Rd like downtown Beirut now 😶 Money laundering center of the World.
the royal albion hotel, best breakfast in town
61 West Street-The-Fri-in was the best fish and chips on the South coast managed by Philip Hilton an ex-trawlerman from Hull.
Remember it very well
Great footage, but I'm sorry you didn't include the prom at night with the famous lights, now sadly gone. Thanks all the same.
Caroline Smyth remember driving at night when we had friends visit or students staying. Was always an adventure and a great memory as a child. 😁✌🏼
@@DMWBN3 My Nan use to walk me along the prom to see the lights when i stayed with her... It was a proper treat :) Lovely childhood memories ❤
How I remember Brighton - it was my family's go to seaside place from Dorking in the 70s and 80s. Back then it was still a bit scruffy. A bit run down. That was half the wonder of it. But forever my favourite seaside place in the world.
Now it's just a London suburb filled with pretend alternative types with holey jumpers that are actually millionaires. Or must be to be able to afford to live there.
As a life long resident, this makes me think of Brighton when it was clean & not full of traffic & drunks.should do a now and then. Our family friend was harbour master and we'd often visit the marina when there was no Asda or flats.
I think traffic should be banned from the centre and deliveries made at night. It would work. But the council also need to be more creative and considerate. They are choking off businesses in the Lanes, maybe to turn it all into flats. I can see it may work but they need to think "why do people come to Brighton?" It is partly due to character and uniqueness otherwise it's easier to drive to and park at shopping centres which many in Brighton fear will occur. Embrace what is special and stop trying to financially choke the life out of it.
You can't vote in the Greens and then complain when they take everyone's money
@@vikingfortiesfaeroes from what I hear its landlords (investment portfolios, particularly a Spanish group) making life in the Lanes financially impossible for independent businesses. I used the word 'tax' but used it loosely although rates are also a big issue. (My thought is that in the long run 'landlords' want the businesses out and the Lanes - the maze area with jewellery shops etc - not North area/Bond Street etc - to be all flats with a few small cafes etc. I may be wrong.)
Nick Thorp they just done a big development of the Laines, not north Laine and added a few little streets, also I believe where hanningtons was they are mostly flats above now.
Some problem is the price of wages v's the fight rents. They almost banned, stopped traffic in the centre, aside from bus & taxis. I do very much embrace brighton, lived here & hove all my life.
But it’s not clean in the film it’s filthy! And there is more traffic on loads of roads that are no pedestrian only! You’re using your rose tinted spectacles wrong!
Where is the flower garden at the end? I live here and dont recall that. Thanks for the video. From "Sussex by the Sea!" 🎵
Nick Thorp the south entrance to Preston park by the rotunda cafe.
@@DMWBN3 thank you, that was my guess but was far from sure! Still a great area.
Brighton has given Sussex a legacy that will go down in history. Though now it has been destroyed by youth culture, chavs, too much diversity and Thatcher, it’s spirit still lives on through football, people and Trains. Sussex is the best county and is my home county.
what a negative nancy
When was the end of palace. Pire redone ? Looks better then looks more like a palace?
1986-1987. I heard a rumour they were supposed to rebuild the end as it was but didn't for whatever reason.
fred flynstowne why did it change or need redoing?
@@caseydoe nobles conveniently lost the theatre, i think the pier looked splendid with the theatre on it
This is really interesting learning how Brighton used to be, I’m a 20 year old and I’ve lived here my whole life, it seems only full of drunks and people protesting about something on a monthly basis in the 2020s
I’m born and bred in Brighton mate, Brighton was in its finest in the 1970’s/1980’s/1990’s. I now live in San Francisco, but Brighton is always my home town. Went back to Brighton last year, full of chavs and drug addicts
Yeah, back in the 90s it was so much better. Just more chilled out and much more friendlier than what it has become. It's just got the mentality of somewhere like London now.
3:15 🤣
Looks like a nice and pleasant town. Now it’s a dirty and scummy place
I'm from Brighton....just too many people, like everywhere now. They also have knocked down so many beautiful building to build student accommodation and yet more car parks.
@@LoveDat65 Sounds like Bournemouth.
Now a haven for low lifes!
Its so funny how they had to rebuild the palace pier just so they can gain More tourism from the uk
When Brighton was a town to be proud of and love . Then it was renamed a city and like most cities it became rundown , dirty , neglected and a pale shadow of it's former self . This was the Brighton l remember as a young man in he's mid twenties and what a great place it was . Heartbreaking and depressing to see the sad state it is in now in 2024 . Best avoided if you remember it as it was then . l blame the Labour council for it's run down condition .
where I was born
John Randall me too
Best time in my Life. When Brighton was great and people spoke English 👍😃🤪
I wish it was like it now, unlike the total sh1t hole it's turned into.
whats gone wrong in brighton?
Not a Burka to be seen..
Naked girl at 025
Brighton used to be wonderful when I was young. It’s now a dump; ugly, unkempt & destroyed by the “culture” there. Sad.
Damm the English
Nice to see racist and homophobic comments here - really speaks to the spirit of Brighton!
Yes if you're missing a little bit of moronic bigotry in your life a you tube comments section can fill that gap . God bless them .
Thatcher, diversity and world population ruined this great city
@@finley1578 you sit on your bus, and we will sit on ours, seems like a good idea looking at how our cities are being turned into diverse zombie apocolypses
