bro, i swear Sean hands down i can really tell you know what you're talking about. man i learned more in this tutorial than some of my friends who went to audio engineering school lol please continue to teach and motivate. thanks man
Thanks to the most high for doing this through you.
I've been binge watching your vids for a week Sean. Can't believe we get all this knowledge FOR FREE! I've considered leaving my accounting career to go learn sound engineering. But learning on my spare time is good enough. SO THANK YOU!
Welcome Jay! Glad it's helping 🙌
Is your name really Jay Cole? 😅
I learn something new every time. Thanks for the video! I realized I had a rigid mind set for my instrumental mixes and was applying a standard checklist of mix movers to tracks regardless if they needed it or not. Gonna restart the mix with a fresh mindset. Thanks again
Another great one. Been watching all week instead of making more songs - trying to get the sound better. I love that you use Logic because it's hard to find great, concise info in one place for Logic users. Back to making music & will be practicing all these things. Keep it up!
Could you possibly do another mixing session with a beat AND vocals?
Thanks for this video brother, I actually learned some things I appreciate it bro God Bless!!
Your tutorial are much helpful... thank you
Thanks a lot for the tips. It is really interesting to see that you do not follow the regular "rules" which most of guys here on CZcams are trying to sell. For me, the take away is that you can do all the steps for each element along the way you mix.
Thank You Very Much Sir!
🙂🙏
thank you so much mister sean divine for your awesome work and for giving me all that usefull tips! your sound and lessons are just divine as your name! keep doin it! thank you one more time!
glad to hear it Signor, no problem :)
I LOVE YOUR WORK. THANKS A MILLION
sure thing Jessie :)
Really helpful! Thank you
Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
no problem :)
You are a genius
Good video bro!
Can you please do a mixing tutorial on neo-soul, or indie, or more old school styled R&B?
Best video on youtube
great tutorial for mixing, but I have a lot of problems to have quality in one single instrument. What's the problem? At the moment I just have the nexus synth
🔥🔥🔥
great tutorial sean.
thanks Luis! enjoyed mixing the beat :)
appreciate you! I have been cramming logic. trying to figure out better ways. mainly over all loudness. its defiantly something in the mixing. Get to the source. Eq everything correctly helps. panning.
great vid... but what exactly did you do on the final mix/master... it sounds warmer
How should I gain stage to achieve loudness in Logic pro X using stock plugins and komplete ultimate 10 plugins. What should my meters read when I'm converting midi instrument to waveform (bip)? How much head room should I leave for mastering?
I would greatly appreciate any response thanks for your time.🔊🔊
hey I have a question shouldn't a mix be between -12dbs. to -6dbs ? in order to add some vocals onto ?
and space for mastering
Hey Sean , thanks for the tips i enjoy your videos ! i have a question , i am also a logic pro user and i have been under the impression that it was almost a must to pan your snares and hat to either side to allow a little extra space for the kick/bass that is dead center , further more i noticed u left alot of your sounds in the center , am i possibly over panning my instruments ? , beacause i basically pan every thing except the 808/subs that stay dead center
thank you greatly for your advice !
Hey Dun, glad to hear they are helpful! I don't follow any specific rules with panning. However, I would rarely (if ever) pan the snare at all. I would recommend leaving the kick and snare centered.
Thanks very much for teaching and sharing. Please do some more mixing vids.
Just uploaded a new one :)
Do you mix entirely in the box and if so with mouse only or a controller?
If you don't have the dr ms what other plugin is good to use as a spreader....
the unmixed version sounds better than my mixed tracks LOL
Lol!! I Say The Same About Mines
Simply Awesome Sir...! quick Q... when adding effects, dynamics, ect..to a channel, do u add directly on that channel or do u create a bus and then add it to the bus so u won't overload the orginal channel ? (does it make a huge difference?)
I generally use buses. I have a video on my channel that explains why they're really useful.
Any mixing template for beats
hey having problems with screen flow since I updated OS X Sierra but I want to know how do u do it with final cut pro
I'm not using screen flow, sorry
Very helpful thank you. As far as eq goes, do you suggest doing eq on most tracks or can you get away w not doing it? Or would that result in such an unpleasant sounding track that no one would never not eq? What are some general rules of thumb and macro ways of understanding this for the track as a whole and then for individual tracks , and does it differ depending on whether it’s instruments tracks or vocal tracks?
there's no definite answer here but I typically EQ most channels - many are simply a hi pass, removing any bass frequencies that would stack up across tracks and muddy the mix. Use your ears and over time you will find what frequencies sound like overall and intuitively make decisions for instruments and vocals. Tons of videos on the channel that cover EQ in detail!
thanxs men im enjoy the show even i was sleep some how
:)
How do you have such a big interface
This is always helpful
I got a question, ok so when i mix my songs i always mix at a lower volume like not even hitting the yellows? its that ok or should i do what you do ?
you should do what you feel comfortable with. That said, with a super conservative approach you'll always needs to rely on a master limiter, maximizer or mastering engineer to get your levels to compete!
Okay, so the Stereo Out channel strip has me extremely curious. I have put an instrumental into Logic Pro X recently and I notice the Stereo Out channel strip is saying its clipping. Now I see from this video that all I need to do is apply a threshold type plugin to the Stereo Out channel strip to prevent the instrumental from going above 0 dB. But, I don't have OZone 5... so is there a stock plugin that can fix this issue?
try the bit crusher. set the ceiling to -.1
You got a subscriber!
:)
Hi Sean. Thank you for the video. Just one question : in the end we see that maximiser have squash peaks about 5 db and diagram jump on downbeat. Its okey ( sidechain effect? ) or better to avoid it?
you don't want to push it too much - if you hear distortion or audible clipping, then that's an issue. Otherwise, no rules. If it sounds good, it is good!
Question? Do you convert the midi files to audio files to save cpu power. I've noticed that all the tracks are audio files?
often times, yes. It helps free up CPU and sometimes I like to commit to a sound in the production process!
Sean Divine right
Hey Sean hope all is well i had a quick question. When your mixing where is the volume level on your studio monitors? and which one do you use ? i know you probably already named them but I've missed it. Most people leave there volume at unity but i know some people who max there monitor volume all the way and balance through there DAW's master fader.
Hey Linndz, I'm using the event 2030 and yamaha ns10m. I leave the monitor volume maxed and control the outputs through the audio interface and DAW.
Sean Divine ok thanks
hey buddy where can i get that crow chant...
:)
pleasee. you can upload a trap o rnbass mixing? please
Antonio Leon Cerdeña I agree with this. Would be great to see how you tackle a Metro Boomin style trap song.
gud job bro
thanks
Hey Sean great vid,I have a question..i was told to never go over -6db on individual channels when mixing and make sure the master bus is peaking at -6db then render to a .wav file into izotope standalone but I see your channels are higher then That
Hey Rickey. If you're sending your material off for mastering, it's not a bad idea to leave some headroom. My mixing and mastering processes are usually one and the same so I push things pretty hot. I always say mix with your ears, not your eyes. As long as it's not audibly distorting I wouldn't worry too much about levels or clipping.
I'm going to try that on my next mix appreciate the feedback.
sure thing
Sean Divine You just gave me hope! Thank you Divine!
Hey man....can u explain how u got all plugins categorized?...for example when u go to audio fx, then u have "compression" where all your comp plugins are inside....that seems not the default drop-down menu from lpx....in my lpx when i click audio fx, i got "Dynamics" where are only the stock compressor inside...but how u got them all categorized in your audio-fx drop-down menu?
i hope u understand my question...my english is not the best (im from germany)
p.S. nice vids....i liked and subscribed to your channel
edit: nevermind...i just found it by my self....it'S just in the plugin-manager window, where i can drag & drop the plugins in the folders
yep :) czcams.com/video/9zVQ6pDVz5M/video.html
Thank you :)
So you use stereo imager not on the master mix and only on a few individual tracks?
it depends, sometimes I'll use something like the S1 or Ozone imaging to add just a bit more width on the master
I have a question?...when your doin tutorials do you use hardware still cuz there are some guys do tutorials and have us thinking that its the plugins give the final mix when really its the hardware
nope, it's exactly what you see/hear in the videos, just plugins :)
Sean Divine 🙏🏽🙏🏽 thanks bro
mehn the balance is awesome. But please i need to ask something. How come the master track in logic is clipping while your audio interface panel isnt?
great question and a big reason why I don't worry about clipping in the DAW... everything has a slightly different way of measuring clipping.
Sean Divine Your techniques are so awesome.Already making my mixes better.Wanna ask bro,i use a saffire pro 14,how good do you think the audio interface is?
I have a question for you Sean, all the Plug Ins you've used in this video, are they stock Plug Ins or do you have to purchase them? Please and thank you.
there are 3rd party plugins used but the same concepts can be effective with stock plugins
Sean Divine So I don't necessarily have to purchase Waves PlugIns?
Hi :) Reverbs on instruments should not be in separate channel?
They definitely should. The way he is using the mix knob, he is basically lowering the volume of the dry signal, messing the volume balance between tracks. But this was just a quick demo. When he gets down to serious business i'm pretty sure he uses sends.
Hey Divine, How Much Do U Charge For Mixing A Beat? I Would Like U To Mix A Beat For Me
seandivine.com/mixing
What's the big difference between mixing on cans or monitors? You mixed this on headphones and it sounds great - what more or less would you accomplish with monitors?
thanks. Getting mixes to translate well from headphones to speakers can be tough. I know these headphones well though so I can usually make it work if necessary. I'd much prefer to mix on monitors, less back and forth.
Awesome. At this stage like you said you're just streamlining your process to handle your workflow but someone like me just getting started can make due with what's available since I have more time. Thanks again.
definitely, no problem
Some or a majority of those tracks are clipping, how do you explain this?
czcams.com/video/mfPgQg-3rJE/video.html
Sean, when you decided to compress that guitar lick at around 19:30, could you please explain Why?
You lower the peaks, or to give it a little More bite?
Il be glad for an answer
Hey Jojo, exactly!
so i guess when your mixing, you want to bounce everything to audio before you start?
it will make it easier in terms of freeing up cpu and ram
Question: whats a VCA?
voltage controlled amplifier... it's an older term but the use is to simply group multiple tracks to one fader
I know that rules are meant to be broken. What do you think about Effects busses? In theory, shouldn't various amounts of the same reverb be applied to the instruments and vocals. I was guilty of using multiple revebs in songs I made in the past. -Adam Wisdom
no rules, I tend to use use multiple reverb spaces in the same session... obviously, you want there to be a cohesive sound but that won't hurt if dialed in correctly :)
i thought you were suppose to leave a few dbs of headroom for the master
if you're going to be sending it to another engineer mastering, then yes it's a good idea to leave some headroom. In my case, I'm almost always doing the mastering and I achieve loudness in the mixing stage.
Can you mix my song
Always 48 db cut ??
In Pro-q 48 db i thing its pushed more to red zone
help help help ;p
no, not always - just depends on how extreme you want the cut to be
The beat was cool but that rooster sound was annoying. Good video!
haha that's funny that's my baby rooster I just went to my back yard and record it, lmao... it's an african-brazilian percusive instrument called cuica it's use it most of the time for samba, calipso, caribbean music with african roots in general...It can be annoying when you are mixing it but if you heard it in the final mix sean didn't stand it out that much which kinda complements the track in general, like he said it's just a funny summer type of beat.
loll you legit recorded a rooster. Interesting. I'm from Barbados btw so its interesting to integrate Caribbean music.
"it's an african percusive instrument called agogo" You mean Cuica? Agogo is a bell type instrument from Africa. What i'm hearing is actually a Brazilian Cuica.
Hard agree
Twenty One Pilots would have killed this one
Why do you have everything turned up so loud? I was told not to clip. It sounds good but I want to know what's the difference from just saying fuck it and getting it to sound good and going by "peak levels should be -3 or bellow"?
TheDFRNT the only rule to follow in mixing: if it sounds good, it is good
Sean Divine exactly!
Mixing is very tough.😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕
stay at it, takes practice, you'll get it 🙌
You're clipping though
Mon3ywar and?
are you supposed to be clipping before limiting?
Mon3ywar in theory, no but if I can't hear it I'm not worried about it czcams.com/video/mfPgQg-3rJE/video.html
Fantastic man! Thanks! got me a little confused.
