  • In Episode 04 of season 1 of the Practicing the Way podcast, John Mark and Tyler Staton explore how to approach everyday moments with the same power and perspective that guided Jesus. As we create space for the Spirit to form us, we increasingly respond as Jesus would within our unique vocations, relationships, and life situations.

Dear John - Mark and, Tyler, Although you might think the people around you are not receptive to your preaching, know that you are greatly loved and appreciated all over the world. Elijah thought he was alone, but God had reserved 100s of others. No doubt he also thought no one cared or listened to him, but throughout the millennia, millions have received his message. So, do not be dismayed. You are being heard. ❤

Really love and learn so much from these conversations. Thank you both for sharing them. One question I had regarding the idea that Jesus is the host no matter where he goes, what is the case when he ascended to the right hand of the Father. In that imagery is Jesus a guest in the Father’s house like we all hope to one day be welcomed into?

Genuine question: why is anger seen as sinning?

From my experience there is nothing more counterproductive to sharing the Gospel than sharing it with people who are not receptive to hearing it.
I came to hear the Gospel because I was looking for God and slowly over time began to trust Jesus with my life.
The worst example of a counterproductive approach I ever experienced was walking down the street and being handed a pamphlet which threatened me with eternal damnation unless I accepted Jesus as my lord and savior.
At the time I remember wondering how effective that approach really was to creating disciples of Jesus and whether anyone tracks data on what approaches are most effective?
My gut reaction is that it’s highly ineffective and
    counterproductive.

I totally agree that street style, door to door preaching has become outdated and is often counterintuitive. As John Mark and Tyler outline, having a hospitable presence is the thing that can serve as a springboard into deep conversations with others about anything in life, including where our hope comes from. These types of conversations go most well with people you actually know (who you live, work, and engage with on a normal basis) and haven't just met. As you share your values, you can share why you believe what you believe while giving the invitation for others to follow Jesus. Choosing to love someone despite the outcome of that conversation is one of the most Christ-like things we can do, trusting God will continue to relentlessly pursue their heart.

Actually people of any age feel that same way about "Preaching" Many other people have been beaten down by judgemental aggressive narrow minded self-righteous religious experiences. The inquisition is an example of that spirit. Our life is our message.
