  • Did you know that STIHL recommends changing your chainsaw into winter mode when it's below 50F / 10C?
This is how you do it on the ms261c
You can find a quick "how to" on the ms 881 on my Instagram @femalelumberjack look under reels ;)

I was using my 261c on the weekend, the temperature was -34 C and the saw run like a charm. A little harder to start when cold, but once running it had no issues with the shutter open to preheat the air. Good video, some people don't know about the shutter.

*Chuckle* I like the outtakes. Definite thumbs up. I've wondered what the snowflake is for on my 661cm .. but living in Australia, I thought leave it on summer as it's rarely below 15C even in winter. Didn't realise it was there to heat the air over the motor but this makes sense. Thanks.

I really enjoy your presentations on the little things that are in reality big things that often are over looked like this one regarding the winter/summer operation.
I would really like to see you give a lesson on chain tension and how to properly adjust it, too much wears out bearings, too little allows the teeth to rock back reducing efficiency.

Thats a simple, interesting feature. We run both Stihl 661, and Husky 372 and 385, but they dont have this vent. When its colder, like 10 F or colder we usually set the saws up on top of the log skidder exhaust and warm them up a bit before crank up.

My 024 winter setting was hard to understand in the manual, i asked the dealer to show me how. 3 people looked at it, and the owners manual. They wouldn't let me look over their shoulder so i could do it myself next time. Well they gave me the saw back in 2 pieces. They told me to bring the saw back in the spring, to replace the winter mode part! I finally figured it out myself. You don't have to be a mechanic, parts person, or owner to sell a stihl saw, the saws sell themselves. Guess what 3 people at the dealer looked at my saw?
