Did you give the lawnmower back to her?
Yeah did he
I need one I’m broke
Steve's Small Engine Saloon I think you should return it
Take it back to her
Giving the lawn mower back to the lady if she needs it is admirable and the right thing to do. If more people would do such things, the world would be a much better place. Thank you for listening to your heart.
I SO AND AGREE WITH YOU WHO EVER YOU ARE GOD BLESS YOU
God wants him to return it..
Yep give it back to the lady..that's what is rite....100 percent that's what i would do...
There's literally nothing you can do about it crybaby that's not how the world works
Guess what? I got a free mower and cleaned it up, changed the oil, and sold it for $120 Now cry VERY HARD
Steve, just the fact that you are open to returning the mower to the lady shows you are a champ.
True champ 👍👍
True alpha
Agree!! Handing it back will earn you good reviews. It is the right thing to do and probably will earn much more business than the $200 dollars you would get by selling it.
I
There is nothing "Alpha" or "Champ" etc about taking it back. That is just a "normal" thing to do. There is however words for those who don't do the right thing. If you think that's good and not normal, perhaps working in an Indian scam call center would be suitable.
Always do the right thing. I would phone the people, explain this and ask if they want it back. I have run my auto repairs this way, sometimes taking a loss but I can sleep at night and not ashamed of myself when running into a customer at a social event. Chris from Duncan
Great job Steve- I am a widow and this happened to me today-now I know what to do-thanks to you. I would give lawnmower back to lady if she wants it back - I need my lawnmower because I cut my grass. If this lady was like me (putting too much oil in it) she probably will be so happy to have you help her with this - God will bless you for doing the right thing!
If there is to much oul in the Frank case, drain it all out and put in the right amount of engine oil in the crankcase and only filling it up to the marked full level on the dipstick. You never over fill it, and of course before you start your mower you check your oil. If the dipstick says yiur under the fill line mark, ad just only enough to get to the line, however not over the line itself. Plain and simple. That's why there's a dipstick and there is also a reason for reading that dipstick correctly and accurately.
Contact the Lady and if she wants it back - Bless her with its return. If she declines - You tried and ur conscience is clear. Cheers Steve
Fuq yea! Thts awesome
That was going to be my suggestion as well. If she doesn't want it, sell it and use the money for the beer fund
She gave it away, sell it drink the profit
John B hell yeah brother🍻😂💪🏾
And maybe if she is really nice, sell it and split the dough
Bring it back to her with a large red ribbon tied to it and say: Merry Christmas!
take her some beer too
and a t-shirt and hat
You guys crack me up. Ha
@@deme7063 lol
Maybe she'll give you a case of beer as a "Thank You" for your compassion!
We already know what you're going to do because you're a good guy. You're going to contact the lady (like you should) and let her have the option if she wants it back
There is no lady. It's just for views. Why do you think he emphasized what should he do?
Return the mower... I have done this a few times before. Reputation is everything!
Steve, the fact you asked those questions tells me the kind of guy you are. You had my admiration for your videos, now you have my respect.
WOW! Thank You...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Yeah, you have my respect as well and because of this I’ve decided to subscribe to your channel. Thank you
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon seems like the mower is running away like a diesel engine
@@danteerskine7678 Some people "delete" the governor to add some rpm
I bet if you take it back to her, she will be a loyal customer for life.
and word of mouth is worth way more than $200, put your contact details on it for business.
I am a bit late but putting a sticker of his business on it would be a good idea as well. I can't believe it was that new and she got rid of it though after such a short time.
Nope she will overfilled it with oil again
This is late but i want to give my 2 cents. She didn't have the brains to bring it to him to get fixed in the first place. Give it to a person in need of one but doesn't have the means to buy one right now. This guy is going to get a lot of business because of his honesty whether he returns it to her or not. At the very least Steve deserves a car of beer for the work.
Honestly what I would do personally really depends on the circumstances. If I was flat broke and seriously needed a lawnmower I might keep it. If I had another lawnmower and I picked that one up with the intent of fixing it and selling it, I would probably offer to give it back no charge.
Or maybe if I planned to put $20 worth of parts in it then I'd ask for $20 for gas money, time, and labor. Again depending on how bad I needed the money at that time.
As a senior citizen (and a woman) who is going through this with my present mower (which is also my son's), I would have given anything to have a man like you to return the mower, and let me know what was wrong. To be honest, I was working full time (just retired at 75), and didn't have time in my life to sit down and troubleshoot, other than read the manual. All the shops were booked out for most of the summer, but they still said, "Just bring it in, we'll take care of it." Now that I'm retired, I have a little extra time. I just changed the spark plug and air filter, but when I tried to start the engine, it blew out smoke, and died. I put that blue gas treatment in the gas that sat through the winter, so I figured it had to be the plug or the filter. After your video, I'm thinking the helpful mechanic who put in oil may have put in too much, so I will check it. The thing is, I used this mower before I had someone who offered to look at it. I know it's a simple 2 cylinder, and I know it's a simple fix. I just never learned how to do it my self. Thank you for even thinking about it, but the choice is up to you.
The no. 1 thing that improved all of my lawnmowers 100%. I followed my mechanic's advice and filled them all with ethanol-free gas! They run like hotrods now!
Always do the right thing, even when no-one is watching!
Tell that the politicians of this country
all depnds on who defines the right thing.. usually its you! and no one else! lets hope you are not giving advice to a psycho!
ESPECIALLY when no-one is watching!
;)
Definitely contact the previous owner. You’ll build your reputation as an honest repair man. That $200 possible quick sale might double in servicing through her word of mouth. Plus, it’s at least the right thing to do. If she says “keep it” anyway, you’ll have both of those benefits mentioned on top of a clear conscience.
I am going to repost this !! Great Post !!
Sell it for $250
Yes, I would notify her & ask her if she would want it back. You are a very honest person.
Offering the lawn mower back to the lady is the right thing to do. It’s almost new and to give her a chance shows that business and people have a heart and helps to restore faith in humanity. 😻🎉🐕
Call her and ask her if she wants it back, if she does, teach her how to check the oil, if she doesn't want it back, sell it or raffle it off at the shop.
Either way teach her how to check the oil, even if she doesn't want it back. I mean she is only ten minutes away and it'd make ole Steve look all upstanding and kind hearted and stuff haha
I like the raffle idea. Maybe he could make enough to get her a riding mower.
A ride on mower! don't they need the engine oil checked then.
The raffle is a terrible idea, you need to be a non-profit to do that!
I agree, I'd give her a call and see if she even wants it. Maybe she decided to have the yard taken care of by a service.
Original owner is watching this and saying ( I never had a lawn to start with. I over filled it on purpose to get rid of mosquitoes ) Now you turned it into a useless lawn mower lol.
LOL!
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Why, Why, Why would you even try it will all that extra oil in it, seems kind of stupid.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Just wondering what you ended up doing with this mower Steve ! Could you pin a comment to this video. I need closure, this was a discussion among my family and we all have different opinions.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon what happens if I run my lawnmower with out auto choke?

I was looking for help educating myself on my mower and I’ve seen a few videos but I had to subscribe here. I just saw this video of 3 years ago. Steve, I have a feeling in my heart that you are going to return it to her, tell her what happened. (She might have already bought a lawn mower too) but do it anyway. You have no idea....the important people that are watching you in your daily routine, that shape and form your character. Remember, the things we DO in life to others, will speak in our defense or conviction in eternity.
Well said!
Very nice .
😂
Take it back. You're a good man, Steve.
Since the lady was giving away because didn’t know what was going on with And YOU are only 5 bocks away in same neighborhood
Giving her the machine back will warm her heart ❤️ for your generosity And will remember you for the rest of her life
I wish you were living in my neighborhood Because i have absolutely the same problem I was looking for ⚙️the trouble shooting information on the CZcams and here you are 👍Thanks for the best advice Now I’ll do repair, by my self Thanks again All my respect to you, God bless your heart
you’re the best 🙏
I went to start my 12.5 HP B&S-powered mower, and it began smoking. A LOT worse than what you just showed. I turned the key off came to my computer and, within a minute, I saw your video. I watched it, drained about six ounces of oil from the engine, and mowed my lawn. Thank you, Steve.
You're Welcome...
Its christmas Steve take it back, i know you will because you are a good man!
As I repair these myself for a living I have came across a few of these easy fixes.I got a mower one time from a lady and turns out it was nothing more then a sheared flywheel key. I contacted her and returned it back to her free of charge. I now have another customer that is glad she has found someone that is honest.
I could probably guarantee that she would never forget your kindness. I just did the same thing to my mower, inadvertently, so I watched your youtube channel, and you just saved my butt. I'm on disability and have no one I can ask for help or advice and I have a large yard and a very old mower, so thank you so very much for your advice. There aren't a lot of honest people out there, but now I know of one more!
The joy in this man gets from a smoking lawnmower makes me feel like my life is a failure.
I just bought one that's smoking. You think his was over full. Mine was all the way up on the stick ! Smoking like crazy ! If I had to guess they used car oil . Weird thing is .I bought it from a lady. Not that it matters ;)
You obviously already know what the right thing to do is. Take it back and thank God for your blessings!
New filter an take it back. Buckin would be happy to hear. Merry Christmas to all.
How kind and thoughtful, Steve. I don't know what you decided to do, but I am sure it was the right thing.
Thanks for this video. I like it when you say "I feel bad about how easy this was to fix should I take it back,"? Yes please take back and teach her some few tricks so she won't lose loads of her property.
By asking the questions of yourself that you did , knowing I would be asking my self those same questions and what I would do, tells me the type of person I think you are, which is the real reason I enjoy watching your channel, so I already know what you are going to do, no matter what we say. God's blessings on you and yours RWY
yeah she's kind of like a two stroke with the smoke thing going on this is why you don't over fill an engine on oil
I learned a long time ago: If you're ethical enough to ask the question, you already know the answer. Do the right thing.
Steve , I was take it back to her. She would be so very grateful and surprised by how you fixed the problem. From listening to your videos You are a very good man who helps so many on your information on each of your videos. Thank you
Giving the lawn mower would be such a blessing. Amazing Job Steve. Thank you very much.
Yes take it back. It will come back to you. Sounds like she needs to learn something. If she doesn't want it then you can sell it. Keep the video's coming and thanks man.
Looks like he got in in the spring/summer... See the green leaves? It's winter now in Canada lol
I have been watching you for some time. I rescue, revive, and or restore small engine equipment. Between you and Mustie-1, you guys have taken me out of the bankruptcy of working on automobiles to small engines which is a total joy and inexpensive. I have donated and maintained small engines for those on fixed incomes, and still offer them service, sometimes as cost to me; but I love seeing mowers like this last for decades and giving advice to their owners how to keep them from rotting away or being thrown out again.
I would see if she wants it back and, if she is able, charge her a small fee for this fix; which is better than having her pay for another mower. If she doesn't want it back anymore, donate or sell it to someone who needs it.
Great video sir. I am in good company here, in both the work, love, and humility/ humanity, and honesty.
Agreed, Steve and Mustie are two of the best. Common sense, direct approaches with real, useful, instructive commentary and good camera work so you can see what they're doing.
Do you know how to make these mowers sound quieter ?
@@evladi7654 Just switch off the engine... :o)
Good on you for being open to giving it back. Even if you sold it, there’s no good in that. Same thing happened to me not too long ago and I ran across your video and was able to fix it myself, change the filter too. There’s a little learning curve and ladies do yard work too! She needs that mower and you’ll be blessed on the backend.
OK - watching this video helped me diagnose what was wrong with my mower. Thank you!

Steve, you are an honest man. The way you explained it was awesome. Thank you very much for the video. Also, if you can, please upload a video on how to change the oil.
You are a good man with honesty and good character, which is why I enjoy all of your videos. I know you're going to tell the truth and I am happy to learn from you. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video, bought my first lawnmower off FB marketplace the other day in my first house and this is exactly what happened and I was freaking out thinking it was a major issue. This solved it in 5 min of watching and 5 min of draining some oil. Lifesaver!
Awesome!
You know what to do....Merry Christmas!!!
I watched Steve last night when he had a lawnmower that had a problem starting, which was the problem I was having with my craftsman lawnmower. I learned something new to me anyway, which was starting fluid. I never knew where to spray it but after I watched his informative video, I sprayed it in the carburetor and it started right up.!!!
Thank you Steve you are awesome !

You're a good man, so I'm sure you did the only right thing to do. And I'm sure it looked brand new when you returned it. Great channel.
You already know what the right thing is to do Steve and I'm sure you've already done it
the right thing to do? he was given a lawn mower for free and fixxed it, yes this was an easy fix but alot of them arent easy fixes and alot of them arent free, now if he likes the lady its great to bring it back im sure she'll send him some customers probably more revenue than the lawn mower would of sold for but calling it the right thing to do insinuates its the wrong thing to keep or sell it.. which it isnt but its great that he brought it back to a single lady who didnt know enough to check the oil, it was afterall not a cheap machine ariens are quality units
@@AndrewBrowner kinda funny because Peter didn't even say a thing about what he thought to be "the right thing to do" of the two options presented and yet you immediately identified one of the two as "the right thing" even if the whole lot of the text was spent on explaining how it is not necessarily. So who are you trying to convince that both options are cool? Yourself? :D

Your are very kind and admirable when you given back to the lady it's the right thing
Yeah, make the attempt to return it. You have no idea how that gesture will bless her and you. Way to go Steve.
I had the same issue with a coworker who gave me two lawnmowers that wouldn’t run. I fixed both of them for under $15. I felt a bit guilty so I offered to give them back. She declined saying that it was her fault. She appreciated my honesty and now I have a customer for life.
Steve, Thanks for your video. I was going to retire my Pope mower (10 years old) until I saw your video. I had over filled the oil and had turned the mower on it's side so I had done a double whammy. I drained the extra oil out and ran it for 5 minutes and it stopped smoking. Thank again Ian
Bring it to the lady. This blessing is for you both.
Hey Steve. I also had a mower that was left out by the kerb. I took it home and started it up. It smoked but NOT as badly as the one in your video. It was an old Briggs side valve engine. In the end it didnt need rings it just needed fresh oil. The owner said he`d had it for years and he assumed the rings were worn down and I was welcome to take it. Serviced it and sold it as a good second hand unit.
It's a "Class" thing Steve.. Right is Right.. Take it to her house... Let her know it was just too full and if she wants's it back, it's her's again. If she has a new mower already.. Your conciseness is clear. Your still a Grade A small engine tech.
I concur
This is what I would've done
You definitely seem like the kind of guy that would do the right thing and call the lady to let her know that it works perfectly fine. That would be a blessing. 🌺
change the oil, install a new filter, bring it back then return to your shop and pop the top of the beer that you forgot to sip because you were soooooo excited!!!! the second time running the mower you checked the time on your watch. you don't own a watch. hahaha - too funny!
you already know what you are going to do. your heart is already telling you what to do!
You're a good man. Just by having the thought of even contacting the lady and letting her know that her lawn mower had a very easy fix. I would do that. 9 times out of ten she would say just keep it. nice and neat video. Thank you for sharing it.
I came here because I have a power washer that is smoking and now I know that too much oil is my problem too. The fact that you brought up the idea of not keeping the free mower and giving it back to the original owner at no charge indicates to me that was your original intention anyhow. Good on you. Also heartwarming to see the overwhelming majority of commenters expressing the same opinion. The majority of people know when something is the right thing to do and appreciate when it is done and also know that it feels good when they do it themselves. You have a new subscriber.
Steve. You know how to fix small engines. It didn't cost you anything but only sharing your time with us and that mower. Thanks for letting us know about over filling our l.movers ..I just know you will give the mower back.Because you are a gentleman .
You Sir saved me a bunch of money and stress. I had flooded my mower with too much oil and had all the same symptoms. Soon as I poured access out and had the correct amount all is good now. Thanks for your video.
You're Welcome...
Can you tell me how you went about emptying the oil out please?
I'm having the same problem with my mower.
Thanks
@@bernicewade9796 It depends on the make and model of your mower. My Craftsman does not have a drain on the bottom so I actually had to tip my mower on its side and drain actually from the fill valve. I used an old metal paint tray, some rags and always make sure to tip mower away from the carb. Put a plastic baggy over the gas tank to prevent gas from leaking out.
I don't think you ever needed for us to tell you what to do and I am sure that you already took the mower back to the lady. You seem like a really decent guy and I know you did the right thing. The lady simply didn't know how to properly maintain the machine. I also think you probably have a new life long customer. I really liked you before but I like you so much more now. I work on OPE and vehicles all the time and I know I would not be able to face myself in the mirror if I didn't take her mower back to her. You're a great man Sir.
I was having trouble with my lawnmower smoke was coming out of the little silver part! Thankfully came accross the video and did exactly what you did and it worked!! Yeah! So happy! I know absolutely nothing about lawnmower but expected to work every time i needed, thank you so much!
How did u drain the oil out ???
I just fixed my lawnmower because of this video! Thank you!
Fantastic!
Thank you so much for this video. I started up my push mower and it was smoking and it hadn't before. I was about to call my know-it-all brother in law when I decided to check CZcams first. Your video was the first one that popped up. After watching it, I drained the excess oil out of my mower. No more smoke! Thanks again!
You're Welcome...
It's the Christmas season Steve, do the right thing.
Great channel!
Thank You...
Steve your a good man! I enjoy watching your videos. Good tips for sure on every one, especially the diagnosis, doing one repair at a time to remedy cause and effect.
The things people do to power equipment are pretty crazy, I once looked at a persons mower, no start issue, I always check the oil first on mowers, well this one the crank case was filled to the top with gasoline! I always say check the oil first, it will run with gas, but not very long without oil.
Thank you for posting this. I had no idea what was wrong with my mower. Now I do and I can fix it.
You’re a good hearted person to think that way. Offer it back at least then see what she says
A: Take it back to her, show her what happened, and give it to her if she hasn't purchased a new one yet.
B: If she has already purchased a new one, sell the old one and give her the proceeds.
Steve, I always try to do the right thing. I'd at least make an attempt to get it back to the owner. If they already have one, you can do what you want with the mower. You never know someone else's situation. Maybe they can't afford a new one? I've been in the same situation. I acquired a mower that only needed a gentle laying of hands. No costs involved other than 30 min of time. I asked around as I didn't need another mower.. Found a friend of a friend that was just starting out in their new (to them) home and really needed a mower. They were a young couple starting out and barely had 2 nickles to rub together. The genuine show of appreciation and gratitude were more then work the 30 min.. Call it paying it forward or God points or what ever you want.. Me? I put it under the classification of being a good guy.
I just bought a mower yesterday and it’s doing the same thank you for this video I’ll be checking the oil filter and carburetor
With all the dishonest people out there, the fact you would find it in your heart to offer would pay you back in many respects etc.
I'm later seeing this and don't know what you did with the mower, return or keep it, but I would have taken it back to her, told her no charge if she wants it back. I'd also have several business cards I my pocket and either way, she would get a few of my cards. You might lose a few bucks for not keeping it, but an honest repair person will get much more business from her and anyone who hears what you did. You can't buy that type of advertisement.
Having watched you freely give us your knowledge on so many things, I am sure you did the right thing. Thanks for your channel!
Thank you so much for this video. I overfilled my oil and the exact thing happened to me. I was freaking out and then found this video and now my lawn mower is working again!
You are so welcome!
Watching Your Video and Hearing What You Said Also Made a lot of Since. I Had That Experience With One Lawn Mower That I Had Purchase At A Garage Sale. The Lawn Mower was a ( Lawn Boy ) That I Paid $20.00 Dollard For. The Seller mentioned that it was Smoking. I Got It Home Checked It out and Found the Gas Mixed With Oil. I Cleaned Out the Gas Tank and the Spark Plug Added Clean Gas and Started the Lawn Mower Up and it Ran Perfectly After That. I Got to Use It for Three Years and Now My Nephew is Still Using It.
Give it back to her.God will Love you for it . God bless you Steve.
Excellent! Thanks to your video, I was able to fix my riding mower in a couple of minutes.😃 I was afraid my old rider had finally bit the dust. Thanks to you, it's back to running perfect with no smoke. Thank you very much for posting this.

If she needs it, just let her know how you fixed it and give it back. Awesome Video Steve
Steve I think you should charge her for your time and call her do she can pick it up. I’m sure she will appreciate how quickly you fixed the lawnmower and tell all her friends about your service.
Thank you so much I have a small tecumses motor and I over filled the oil and blew a ton of Whig smoke. I drained it a bit but it’s still over the full line but I’m sure if I drain it more it will have more power and stop shooting flames!!

Seems to me, you don't want to talk about it.

Bring it back to her she obviously is not used to caring for her lawn and needs help, I’m sure she’ll be forever grateful! Good luck!
