In some countries they use water (or gathered rain water) as it's cheaper and more hygenic than toilet paper. Case in point in Japan they have toilets that wash and dry after use.

If working on the farm and you are a mile away from the nearest toilet, we used grass or wide leaf weeds. Just be sure the organic material of your choice isn’t toxic, aka., poison ivy and such.

When ever my brother inlaw goes hunting he wears 2 pairs of socks so he can wipe and he has used his underwear before. When you use leaves make sure that it is not poison oak.

My father grew up on a farm in the 1930s. He said they used the dried leaves from corn stalks, and from corn cobs to wipe their butts. They even used the cobs. He also said that they used old newspapers and the sears catalogue. He remembered getting paper cuts on his backside from the sears catalogue. He was not familiar with flush toilets or toilets paper until about 1948 when he joined the military.
I went to europe in 1982 and there was no toilet paper. Just a bidet. Big culture shock for me.
