14:14 YES. The way Rachel talks critically about her role is something male actors have been doing for the longest fucking time without consequence. Sometimes they’re even praised for it. Robert Pattinson’s comments on his role as Edward and recently Jacob Elordi full on trashing The Kissing Booth immediately come to mind. They hate on the vehicles that MADE them and nobody bats an eye until a woman does it. While I’m here, Jenna Ortega was also slammed for being critical about the writing of her character as Wednesday. I wonder what’s the similarity there??

I'm one of those people who criticize male actors for trashing the roles that helped them with their careers just like with female actors so don't say "Nobody bats an eye until a woman does it." There's a difference when Robert's and Jacob's *regret* of their roles vs Rachel's *hatred*. She was an ignorant, entitled, brat that hated a female character and movie that she was supposed to promote to the general public. Don't cry sexism and invalid people's criticism of her just because she's a female. Zegler is misogynistic for reducing Snow White's character as just a woman who chases after a boy.
Omg right? I remember hearing about the controversy - and then I watched the interview and I was like ".... That's it? Is that really all she said? Why are people so mad at her?"
I actually love the moment when Snow gives a terrible and stupid answer to the "who's the third" question.
A pet peeve I have of media with a tyrant is that the tyrant is always far more intelligent than everyone else. But it doesn't take intelligence to become a tyrant, it only takes a willingness to be cruel. This moment exposes to us as readers/viewers that Snow isn't particularly smart or strategic, he was just willing to sell out a friend. That's it. That and his family's albeit diminished standing in the capital was enough to pave his way to becoming the tyrant we know from the original trilogy.

I think he loved her in an obsessive controlling way. He didn’t necessarily love _her_ he more so loved the control he had over her. So when they where in the district and that control was slipping so it was his love.

He sure loved Lucy, but if she gave him any reason to lash out, he would. We just didn't really get to see it much since their relationship was so short lived. The look in his eyes when she mentioned being the one thing tieing him to the crime scene+ when the snake bit him. Also, you cannot tell me that that man wouldn't hold stuff against her at every disagreement( "I saved your life! I gave up everything for you!") and you cannot tell me that they're compatible enough to have a happy ending. They had a spark, they trauma bonded, they're 2 beautiful people. That's not enough. Good on Lucy for catching it early on.

I haven’t read the book but from the parts I’ve seen, I think he *loved* her in the book. But not in the movie.
In the book, he expresses way more his love. He seems more genuine (he’s still a sociopath). I think the controlling obsessive love is book snow.
But in the movie, my theory is that he just crushes on her. It seems so surface-level, and most of the time she was just a prop to him.
Btw, now that I’ve seen the movie I can’t understand- fathom- the appeal of snow. He disgusted me the first 20-ish minutes, I got the ick (Tom Blyth supremacy tho)
@@diorchanelhermes trust me, he doesn’t love her in the Books. The movie actually made him look better. When you read the book you will see how obsessive and cruel his inner diolouge was to her. But I would highly recommend giving the book a read. It’s a great Story and if you enjoyed the film i think you will really like it.
honestly I find it king of funny how she came up with a story showing how western governments treat their own people in their countries then turned around and went "actually they aren't that bad" when they're doing similar things to other countries while also ignoring the points she made with her writing

So I went to see this with my gf on opening weekend. I've read the book a couple times, she never has. We got up mid movie (because the sodas are big and the movie is LONG) and I asked her what her opinion on Snow was at that point in the movie.
Cause I thought the actor did a great job of showing just the right amount of judgy dochebag from the start but I didn't know if it was just the hindsight and all that.
My girlfriend said "I think the movie wants us to think he might be good, but he can't be good. He's way too focused on his image, his family image, and getting ahead to be good. He seems manipulative." I think the actor got his evilness across from the beginning just fine ^-^

One thing I feel this movie did very well is making ALL tributes feel very human. In the previus film the only tributs that realy felt human were Katniass, Peeta, Rue and Finnick. The rest were either just a bunch of peopole we knew nothing about, Career tributes or part of the rebel plan (meaning that for the later two they were either, ignotant, aware, or resigned to their death anyway). In this movie they instead gave many of the important tributes very breef scenes that made us understand a lot about who they were and the life that was taken away from them.
Honestly I think it had to do with the perspective the first movie was from katniss’s pov and from propaganda and stuff we see the career tributes just like she did. Arrogant and just bad in general
@@erinfrazier1439 The 1st person prospective definatly also played a part in to not giving much insight in the rest of the tributes. As for the careers, despite the fact that they are still victims of the system like everyone else, I realy can't bring myself to feel too much sorry for them since it was still something the decided to do, with the knowlage or the intentional ingorance of what might happen to them. I'm sure that there are a lot of careers in training that give up, just because they find the risk too great. Despite the propaganda I don't think everyone would be willing to risk it all to become a victor. At some point somepeople are bound to think to themself "This is too much, I can't do this, I'll let the glory to somebody else"
Also the fact that they cast a handful of disabled actors!
& They didn’t make it hinder their character or make them get any sort of special attention. Such an improvement from the first book considering the disabilities of the main characters (Peeta’s leg and Katniss’s hearing loss) they ignored
Lucy G clearly said that she couldn’t stay with somebody no matter how much she loved them if she couldn’t trust them. That’s what I feel happened. She and Coryo did love each other, but she couldn’t trust so she left him.
And I can’t lie… Tom’s arms when he was shooting that rifle… 🥵
The uniform skirt over the trousers made me think of the bottom half of a toga, so a neat callback to society in Ancient Rome. Lucy Gray’s dress looked perfect too: faded/muted rainbow with appropriate wear and tear if it belonged to her mother.
13:45 also feel like Coryo could have just said something like "when I was a child during the war I accidentally killled a man who was attacking my cousin over food". It would have been a lot more believable, morally forgivable for her and maybe made her feel sorry for him.
Oh yea but it doesn’t work cause he says he killed 3 people in the summer (I think he says “i think 3 in one summer is enough for a lifetime” or sum like that). I always thought he should say he considered himself responsible for the murder of billy taupe cause he kinda was by killing Mayfair but idk

From the start he saw her as his possession not a full human like him, in the books that's very clear. Even a key line in the movie is when Highbottom says "the district 12 Ruth girl belongs to snow" belongs, in the capital the distric folk aren't feel people. That's why in the book he spends so much time trying to differentiate the Covey's from D12 and closer to capital while still not capital so he can claim her as his property after the games.

As a non USA person who has never lived in the USA. I love how self conscious you are of the status and presence of that country in the rest of the world. And not to say that the people from USA are bad in any way, but the government has never stopped implementing colonialism on us others, and oppression and involvement in our affairs for benefits of their own. Even to the point of starting wars in other countries. As a Costa Rican I think people from the Us aren’t even aware that there was a war here less than 100 years ago because they wanted to make us a slave colony. And the explotation of resources has never stopped (not only form the US of course, also done by other” 1 world “ countries) It feels very rewarding when people acknowledge the the US is the oppressor in many cases and not only this ilusión of the country of “freedom”. (This is not to send hate in any way, it just to spread some ideas in current and past world history that it is I imagine not taught over there )
I suppose it’s probably more indicative of the space I occupy online myself, but there are a lot more people in the states that have a sense of self awareness of the US in terms of global politics than you give us credit it sounds like.
As the other commenter says , many people are aware , especially younger people… but as an American with family in Costa Rica and have spent time there , I do absolutely understand what you’re saying . Even those who think they are aware of the dark horrible history of the United States , still aren’t as aware of American-centrism that paints almost every other country as less free and less civilized. Sadly sooo many people in America are completely deluded by trump and the alt right , that white supremacy is growing in America again , it’s disgusting. im from the global south, and I truly consider the global north, specially the us, a dystopia. it’s so weird to me that people over there don’t realize it and then go and make a movie like the hunger games, that quite literally mimics the real world and not be aware of it.
like, communism did almost destroy my country completely but capitalism is not a dream either jeez. i’m just tired of people associating poor aesthetics with historically left winged countries, as if their own countries 1) don’t look the same in impoverished areas 2) didn’t contribute to the state of the world.

A lot of people realize it specifically those in marginalized groups mostly because our politics try to find new ways to try and eradicate us or make our lives harder like every 5 years, most of the people who don't realize this are usually people who aren't targeted by the masses (mostly white people in countries like the US and western Europe) and the marginalized people who are either brainwashed or think dick riding is gonna help them be see as people
@@scarletkittyeyesAs someone who is also from the global south, in what part of this person's comment suggests a lack of training in media literacy? just because something is propaganda, does not mean it is immune to criticism- especially as, being propaganda, people still fall for it, including people from the global north. Just a very weird thing for you to just single out. Most of us from the global south (especially central to south america) comment on the hunger games critically due to our countries histories being trampled on by very brutal periods of military dictatorships that were implemented on by the U.S during the Cold War, which share similarities to Panem's worldbuilding. I wouldn't call that a lack of media literacy so much as pointing out something that was very real and that happened to some of our cultures.
@Kappinna I am so sorry!! I wasn't trying to suggest a lack of media literacy training on the part of anyone from the global south. I was actually criticizing what I see as a lack of media literacy in American writers like Suzanne Collins. I find that without instense media training, most americans aren't just ignorant but very insidiously truly believe the imperialist propaganda and live in it their whole life. They don't recognize the struggles of the global south at all, believe in racist eugenics, and believe in white supremey and the beauty of american imperialism. Anyone can be impacted by propaganda and has their own stuggles with the information they are given growing up, but I find that a lot of other countries don't have the level of coercive control over the media like the US. We aren't even really taught about the glbal south at all and tons and tons of things are left out of historic education about even the north (usually ends right at WW2, excludes all genocide events, chattel slavery, and erases indigenous peoples). I apologize for phrasing it in such an ambiguous way. I am tired of having to teach other people in my life that basic american movies are lies in my daily life, and I wrote an exasperated comment that really meant to say, "I appreciate being able to hear the lived experiences and perspectives of people from the global south, because I feel bombarded by propaganda in the global north". Thanks for bearing with me, and I apologize again for it. As an american, I spend every day feeling like everyone in my life is brainwashed and sometimes in youtube comments that frustration comes out wrong.
Totally right and valid points, however the author did realize it, though. She wrote the books because she felt disturbed by the contrast between war and entertainment media. The book is meant to be a commentary on society, particularly in the US. She wasn’t unaware it was mimicking society, it was very much intentional.

@LisaFevral I had the same reaction. I thought it was adorable for the boys and elegant for the girls. Overall very cute but stylish therefore effective. It reminded me of Japanese children's uniforms, accessories included. The whole point of the garb is to show these are not just children but barely babies at a certain life stage. The outfit exaggerates the children's littleness, cuteness and defenselessness to make the adults be protective of them since they look too damned cute. You look at a kid wearing the thing's and your head thinks "baby", must protect. So you do. With teenagers the outfit highlights they're borderline adults but still youth since the outfit is a little weird. Therefore you treat them accordingly, these are BIG kids but still KIDS.

I think a lot of audiences just can't get over the concept of "hot protagonist is always good" even when they Knew Snow was the bad guy in the Hunger Games. Hot characters are often evil but they're rarely the protagonist in movies, especially in the West. Which, I think, is why "snow being hot" is such a hot (lol) topic.

I loved everything about this video. From discussing the fashion to defending Rachel Zegler 😌 and I was especially pleasantly surprised and thankful for the discussion at the end. Personally, I think the reason a lot of the west has a hard time wrestling with us being the bad guy is for some big reasons. 1 is ego, meaning they believe if they believe the conclusion that the west is bad, that means they're also bad. 2 is exceptionalism in that if it doesn't effect them personally, than it doesn't matter. Zombie by the cranberries is a fantastic song that touches on this... "it's not me nor my family". And 3 is nationalism to some degree, my country can't possibly be bad (looking at you American.) the point is it's a variety of factors and it's very difficult for a normie to see if they have some degree of the 3 mentioned factors. There's also a bonus reason where people show no concern because they're concerned with survival more than anything. It's all frustratingly a lot..
As an american, using the song Zombie (a song abt the deaths of two young boys during the Troubles in Ireland) where "its not me, its not my family" is about how the singer still felt horror and compassion for the families of the boys as specifically the american concept of being uncaring for others when theyre not related to you is. Really rude to the Cranberries. And to Irish people in general. I've seen this song used in relation to americans a few times now, and I don't really understand why.
Also you completely misrepresent the American ppl. Americans don't want to see our country as the bad guys bc A. Huge amounts of propaganda and B. people don't want to see their country's actions as their own or see that they benefit from it. There are still many Americans who know otherwise and who are learning otherwise. Honestly I’ve been watching a lot of reviews on the new movie but I’ve refused to watch it. (Boycotting) but I did want to know how it compares to the book because it’s one of my favorite series. Like I said I’ve seen many videos talking about the fashion, storytelling, character comparison, the acting, pacing, etc etc… when I tell you that you’re the FIRST one to even mention anything about 🍉 I whipped my head so fast to my phone on my bed! As much as I loved the hunger games I didn’t bother to read the book or watch the film.You’ve made me a little curious now though. edit: it’s weird that Suzanne focuses on the soldiers as the representation instead of the people they threaten and the countries they destabilized which would force real life children into hunger games like situation. Like has she really reckoned with her own desensitization if she’s not focusing on how the invasion of countries by the global north plunges entire countries into war in order to extract resources and enforce global power imbalances but the soldiers who’ve aligned themselves with the states mission.
I think its called writting an interesting story.

I didn't interpret that part of the interview as her saying it was her motivation for the message of the books as much as the motivation for the tributes + sponsor system. TBOSAS even has Snow realizing the people in the Capitol needed to care about the tributes for the games to continue and first implementing that system. The Capitol connects with the tributes like they're reality game show contestants, which is what she talked about just before the point about the soldiers. The question she was answering was about how she first had the ideas that led to the books and she seemed to mostly be explaining her inspiration for how she conceived of those initial pieces of worldbuilding. I haven't seen the rest of the interview, but to me the part shown didn't suggest the same militarism/U.S.-centrism you saw in it

Honestly, as someone who’s worked for upper class people for a while and listened long enough to some of their bs, I think I know how some of their brains work. How they justify the mindset of doing nothing and profiting off of and supporting injustice. (Not all of them have this mindset, I guess, but it’s difficult to be wealthy in the global North and not somehow have profited off of injustice- no ethical consumption under capitalism, etc. etc.)
Anywho, the impression I have gotten from being around some of these extremely wealthy people is that they’ve truly bought into the bs. Bc once you surround yourself with almost exclusively people in your tax bracket, and go to galas and celebrations where you get applauded for donating crazy amounts of money to things bc you know you’ll get the tax write off, once you live that kind of life for long enough, it seems like it’s incredibly easy for you to truly become isolated from the reality that, as you said, “we are the bad guys.”
Especially in the US, we are told at every turn, even in school-though there have been some attempts to change this at different points in history- that we are the defenders of freedom and we are the perfect democracy where everyone is free and equal. And anyone saying otherwise is just stirring up trouble or complaining, when if they just worked as hard as you did, they’d surely become as wealthy and successful as you, straight cis white man from an upper class family. It’s shoved down our throats from a young, young age.
So it completely makes sense to me that- with that overwhelming amount of propaganda, not being taught many critical thinking skills or to question our innate biases/the status quo in school, being told that the real dystopias are places like Russia, the Middle East, North Korea, China, etc. (not that these places don’t obviously have their own problems), and that we can “save” others from them using our military might- those people would feel entirely comfortable never considering that “we’re the bad guys.” Because they’ve never been taught to question that. So those who do not inherently seek to question themselves and the system they grew up in, because they profit off of it so deeply that they view it as a sort of almost paradise, and they are deeply comfortable within its structure since it has been built for them, also aren’t taught by anyone else to question this structure, (and they might recognize subconsciously that it would be uncomfortable for them to do so), meaning they could easily go their whole lives deluding themselves. Any challenge to the status quo is scoffed at and waved away by these people. It’s crazy how adept they are at deluding themselves into believing themselves and our society are the good guys.

Really love that you pointed out details in the tributes' costumes that hint at what district they're from, I totally didn't notice that in the movie, so thanks! Same with the host's change from reporter to showman. You also did a great analysis of why the global North is much closer to being the Capitol than being district.
I agree with mostly everything you said about the movie as an adaptation, too. My biggest concern before watching was how they would convey all of Coryo's inner thoughts (I thought maybe he'd make some more judgmental faces when nobody was looking at him, at least?) and the answer turned out to be that...they didn't haha. So yeah he definitely comes off as a better person in the movie. Although I don't think he started out evil in the book either. He had a lot of selfish tendencies and problematic behaviors and a huge thirst for power that I'm sure came from the trauma of the war, but he wasn't wholly bad until Dr. Gaul started grooming him. I think the book does a great job in showing when he actually passes the point of no return: when the narration switches from calling him 'Coriolanus' to calling him 'Snow', in the epilogue. Up until that point he had a chance, after that his destiny as a horrible person was sealed.
Like you, I also felt pain in knowing Tigris' relationship with Coryo deteriorates so much, ahh! I think the reason why he ended up valuing power over everyone he loved has a lot to do with Dr. Gaul convincing him that humanity really IS always murderous and horrific. She put a problematic, traumatized 19 year old in horrible violent situations, and that warped his perspective of people even more; so he may well truly believe EVERYONE - family included - is dark and selfish deep down and will turn against him if given the chance. Cause by that point HE actually is like that.
I think when you look at the actor's face you can see moments where he somehow managed to convey Coryo's thoughts really well without it being obvious, like that moment in the cage where Lucy Gray is talking to the reporter and he is literally in the background(not even in full focus) looking her up and down quickly and looking at her with a weird mix of possessiveness and being pleased. Also his thoughts were definitely well written to be ignored by people irl who have been groomed to think that possessiveness and such is ok in a man, which is an interesting way to draw a parallel between power and gender relationships
@@LisaFevral Yeah, I agree that there are times where you can see Coryo's thoughts on his face, and I do think the actor did a fantastic job overall. The cage scene is probably one of the best examples, I remember thinking he was portraying a lot of book-Coryo on his face there. But like you said, in the movie he still came out looking like a nicer person than he is in the book for sure.
Yeah, his possessiveness is almost non-existent in the movie, from what I can remember. I guess it's because he never really acted on that in the book, it was just a feeling we read in his thoughts, but it was definitely a red flag that got brushed over in the movie.

I've been having conflicting thoughts about this movie. The part of me that is still obsessed with the Hunger Games story just wants to see it for nostalgia's sake (the books are one of my absolute favourite series, they mean so much to me). But another part of me feels kind of uneasy about the fact that they announced a movie at the same time as the book was announced. For me it feels like capitalizing upon this franchise and turning into another product. Now, I did eat up the first movies when I was a teen, it was a fun time waiting for them and seeing them in theater and all, but as an adult, watching them feels weird.
I didn't love the book, I like the themes SC explored within, but I wasn't a fan of the whole "romance" act. I think I might just wait for the movie to go to streaming because I'm not sure I want to spend my money on it abd see it on a big screen, but I am still curious.
I also want to say, you touched on an interesting point that I have never seen anyone other than me bring up, which is the aesthetic they chose for the Capitol in the movie. I feel like so much of Mockingjay especially was lost because of those choices. I don't like that they made the Capitol look like 1930s/40s Germany/like a soviet city. And so grey.
In the books one of the main aspects that Suzanne Collins highlights is how colourful and plentiful the Capitol is. There as countless parallels between the atrocities happening on page and the clownish style of the Capitol. Especially in Mockingjay. For example the pink and orange paving stones Boggs steps on, the woman with her exotic bird dress that Katniss shoots, the little girl in the bright yellow coat, or the baby blue buildings as the tar wave follows the Star Squad. Those things struck me on first read when I was 14, and no one seems to have noticed that enough to comment on it. It really highlights what you have said about the US and global north being the Capitol. That city and the Games are a capitalist nightmare. Making the Capitol look like a cliché mid 20th cenrury dictator's city in the movies takes so much away from that.
The whole point of that book was that extreme systems are bad and we should seek more nuance, hence why Katniss killed Coin.
I completely agree with you with the whole last section. It's insane that people don't connect the usa with the capitol.

your ending point hit so hard to me! i think i mentioned before that never managed to finish reading the books because of how depressed they made me, but i did watch all of the movies at least once, so i do kinda wanna watch this new one to get the context too. though, now that you mention how tone-deaf & dissonant the people handling this franchise have been, my enthusiasm is a little dampened. i also struggle a bit with no bringing politics into my everyday conversations but it's...idk, astonishing i guess, that all of this time i though suzanne collins knew & was acknowledging how the global north -- especially the u.s. -- has exploited the global south for such a long time & that even countries like my own, mexico, despite seeing a somewhat lesser exploitation thanks to our proximity, we're still seen as the other. i have to wonder if this is how dystopian concepts in fiction seep into real life, if so many others aren't seeing the direct parallels to today & just viewing these works of fiction as pure entertainment & something so vastly removed from our reality.

As a person from a third world country, life at district 12 always seemed way too familiar to me. I see it around me everyday. I’m just a lucky “baker”. And imperialism is just part of our daily lives - some are even convinced is for our own good.

42:47 Literally I'm obsessed w this take and i agree fully, we def need to take accountability that we are most def the capitol. Also it's really sad to see Susan Collins say that like girl. The only minor thing i thought about on the whole capitol-pre ww2 Germany parallels was that the conclusion I draw at least is more that the capitol is 30s Germany not because they will become nazis or something but more that 30s Germany have been blamed for the first world war. This meaning that the people in Germany are incredibly angry and need a scapegoat enter hitler blaming jewish people, gay ppl, disabled ppl, the rest of the world. I see more parallels between the capitol being a country who have been harmed and therefore can see their enemies as non-human, thereby excusing any treatment, than the capitol just being nazis. Idk incredibly jumbled and im not the first to say this def but ya

It is crazy it is to see these things play out irl and people still act like Capitol citizens. Living in the US is quite the trip, people can really either grow ideologically from all of this, or double down in their nationalism and refuse to see how we are very problematic, and should hold our government responsible.

Sorry for like my thousandth comment on this video lol but I had no idea that Collins made those comments! I’ve never doubted that the Hunger Games is supposed to be about the modern U.S. Lucy Gray’s identity as a Covey seems to clearly be comparable to the position of indigenous people, like when the host says she’s from district 12 and she’s like “if you say so.” And the themes in her songs. And the fact that district 11 is mostly Black and they’re treated the worst next to district 12? But they’re trying to say that we aren’t the capital after all the similar atrocities the U.S. has committed? Wtf. Like the capital may be a more openly horrific, satirical depiction of the U.S., but the U.S. is just as bad under the surface, and definitely not under the surface if you experience oppression and poverty.
