- DIY on how to make Overhead aquarium sump or Top filter for your aquarium. It's easy and cheaper to make a aquarium sump made of a plastic planter box and one of the advantage of using a planter box is you can easily get the right size for your aquarium from 1 feet to 5 feet. Also having a planter box you can add any filter media that you like and adding a plant or pothos plants to easily remove the nitrates from your aquarium.

P.S. The sponge must cover at least half of the water outflow so it can filter small debris. Don't cover it with sponge because it may clog or you can put the sponge filter in the first chamber if you want to catch all the pop. Also, the filter medias just use to provide housing for beneficial bacteria. Thanks guys!
Ano po... filter medias. Like socks sa paa.
Nah.... Filter pads should be in the first chamber to screen out debris, and so doing your ceramic rings, pumice and lava rocks filter medias won't get clogged quickly with debris.
I think it's great that you tried this all on your own. Couple suggestions, first put a bead of silicone on the edges of your baffles so you can force water to flow through your media, not bypass and go around. Second, dont put your plants in the first compartment where all the extra fish waste collects. Put the plants in the last compartment so they can get the benefits of your filter and your water can get the benefits of your plants.
Thanks for the suggestions 👌
I think it should be mechanical before biological filtration. Thanks for the idea anyway. I love your DIYs. 👍👍👍
I said the same thing.
Very nice and creative build friend
nice diy i will copy this idea :) for my 50 gal tank
Nice video💕
Thank you!
Nice idea. I would put first the sponge filter before the stones and ceramic media but otherwise great DIY.
FPI23 me too. I use a coarse sponge first, maybe 10-20 ppi, then a couple of bio media compartments, then the filter floss at the end.
So do i
I agree
Exelente así voy a acomodar mi filtro sump aéreo para q no se sature 👍
Great ideo lodi
well done
You have your bio media in the wrong place, The Sponge needs to be where the water enters to mechanically filter out the large particles.
The sponge must be located at first place
He is going to clog all the rings with dirty water always use mechanical filtration first so that clear water enters the ceramic rings
I thought i was the only one that thinks he's wrong 😅
maybe he can reverse the sponge through the ceramic rings
Very smartly done.
Small suggestion to improve the design. Avoid sponge near exit as may clog the outlet points. Or cover with hard plastic mesh so it keeps down.
By the way which top filter you had earlier ? You had displayed the box of top filter to show it was smaller. If possibble you can let us know dimensions of filter box VS the pot dimensions to compare them.
Great idea, I’m working on adapting it!
it's a good idea, but i don't think it makes efficient use of the filter media. there's a reason why sump baffles (compartments) use the top-bottom-top opening configuration, to allow water to pass through all the media. this build allows water to pass through just the tops of the media (path of least resistance) and ignore the rest. this is especially apparent with the foam filter at the last compartment just pass over the foam and out the drain pipe, ignoring most of the foam. while this effect is passable for lighter bioloads, it becomes a strain with heavier stocked tanks
Raven H agreed. Do you think if the outlet was lower, and drill some small holes top to bottom in the middle walls it would be sufficient?
@@joythompson4134 theoretically it can work. but consider these:
1) muck and dirt may end up clogging the drilled holes, making water bypass them and overflow through the top instead. This will require constant maintenance of all the holes on all the compartments, but you can address this somewhat by reversing the order of media (i.e. put sponge first/coarse or fine filter to reduce the muck reaching the others)
2) you'll need stronger, more rigid separators for your compartments, like rigid plastic/acrylic/glass, not flexible plastic. because the holes will regulate and restrict flow, the pressure the separators will need to withstand is much greater. flexible plastic will bend and deform under flow rates of 1,100 litres/hour or more (~250gph, usual flow rate of 40gal tanks or above), so keep that in mind
Raven H j. pl 100 construction glue will hold down the separation walls good filter if it leaks water goes back into the aquarium
Hi it’s looks nice and pretty cool. But All ur plant doesn’t need any sun lights?
Right. PLants idea would work well in cases where Aquarium is near windows where sunlight comes.
Ye plants kon s hn Jo Pani m bina mitti k rah jaenge
Where to the submersible pump hose socket if I need more than one?
Make a video about to how to add a sump for already planted tank with fishes in it
One lonely fish isn't going to test the viability of this filter. I could use a pair of socks or stockings and be satisfied with the results from one fish.
Im not an expert on it .. but i think wool should go first then your k1 should be moving the constant friction what makes K1 works really well if you just put them like that much better you use bottle caps
What are those plants called??
First slot from water inlet must be the white sponge filter next will be the other filter media before the water outlet....u need the good water bacteria for the water....
put the sponge filter in the first chamber that can filter the bigger particles and dont keep plants in the 1st chember. any way nice idea.
What type of plants are best for top filters?
Most that can survive just with water & light(soil not must). As shown here common Money plant.
I would put the inlet and outlet on the inside you never no and use epoxy glue.
What kind of plants you used in the filter
Golden pothos or you can try grow a sweet potato
¿Is better put 3 types of biological media that only one?
Very nice #diyaquarist
Please advise plants for marine tanks
Pothos
Why cant you just speak Mr. Jazz hands ? But thanks for including the microscopic text font. Ur a bright individual.
Its a nice idea, but you're not using all the potential that you can take
Bakit sa huli ang filter wool? Pano isasala pops ng fish don
Size of tank sir?
I used this for my 50gal bro. The size of the plantbox is 2ft 👌
di to magwork bro mataas yung out eh so di nagflow yan sa holes
what is the name of the plants ty
Humprey Lou C. delrosario pothos plant
Sorry I didn’t see the blue pipe part yet😏

Sponge goes first, mechanical before biological.
Water is flowing in the wrong direction
Media setup is wrong bro
That is one hill jack filter the media is the last thing the water should ho threw completely backwards smfh
"fewer nitrates"
Ulta kar diya setup sponge should be first I think got over excited
DUDE LIVES IN A TRAP HOUSE...
This filter wont clean any shit...... All the water is running above the filter media instead water should flow through it........ U should have placed the outlet pipe much lower ie below the filter to work properly
Exactly, running water will not pass through media instead it will flow from above the media and straight into tank again. Where this way it will clean 45% but if the drainage pipe is placed below then sure it will do the 75% cleaning
