Captain Cody shows several commercial salmon fishing boats. Salmon trollers are used to catch salmon commercially. The basics of downriggers is shown. A salmon gill net boat is also shown.
Hopefully, this gives you an idea of the basic boats used to catch salmon. There are also seine net boats used to catch salmon. Mostly pink and chum salmon though.

That was bloody interesting. Thank you for posting it. Commercial Trollers keep their trade secrets very close to their chests. There is almost nothing of commercial trolling on youtube.

Sometimes commercial fishing is like being at war, The 1986 Addams River Sockeye run saw thousands of troll vessels 50 miles off Northern Vancouver Island.
all boats had a 5-mile-wide school that made tact congested only the largest boats would vie for the best bight. There were some collisions among the most aggressive. Let me say that being on a commercial fishing vessel in a collision can be a dangerous place steel rigging tends to snap aluminum poles when they collide as stay cables zing above my head a few inches lower and I most certainly would be dead. 50 years I spent on and off the sea, I am still here by all odds the ocean never got the best of me. I would love to go back to capture it on film as a history of the West Coast fishing memories and dedicate it to all who were lost in the pursuit of the Pacific Gold.
Some good info but the big triangle thing is called a stabilizer and isn't used for fishing that only attaches to our poles that go off the boat to give usore stability and to keep the poles tight while we have our wires and leads in the water!

My father's first boat was 32 feet called JEHU III with a commercial license in those days it was a transmission with chain and sprocket.
Nothing other than a compass there were a few times I think we were lost in the fog. We would stay offshore and hope the fog lifts.

The 'planer' is a stabilizer, which hangs off your poles to stabilize the boat. To spread your lines you use styrofoam 'pigs'.

I lost my 'pigs' on Top Not pinnacle on my first run the good thing is thanks to Loran C the location record put me right on the gear. What a way to begin my fishing career.
You only have to do that shit once. Learning the hard way is often the good way. GPS, chart plotters and really good sounders make it a lot easier than it was. Cheers. :) @@TheBuzz222

the lines are spread by the poles going down and the lines from the gurdies are drawn out. the stablizers just stabilize

That sir is a stabilizer to keep your boat stable. And that big weight ball shape in the back deck is called a cannon ball.

I've been to the Scotty factory on Vancouver Island and their factory is no frills straight to the point just like all of their awesome products! That hand troller 😬 I get arm pump from operating my manual Scotty, I have since upgraded to an electric Scotty!

Wow 10,000 pounds a week? I need to go fishing there. Here in S.E. AK we are only getting 20,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds for a 3 month season.
That is what I was told. It depends on the fishing obviously and what types are open. But in Sitka, July through August, the fishing is pretty consistent for silvers. Kings are typically only open a few days out in the good spots. There are always lots of lots of commercial boats out there trolling away. I was just running charters so do not really know the numbers for commercial guys though.

That was a stabilizer that hangs from the trolling pole to slow the roll of the boat, has nothing to do with troll gear.

Who in the hell run a hook every 6 feet, tangle fucking city, be ok on 3 foot leaders.
The spacing can be fathom or fathom and a half. The commercial leaders are about 6 feet in length I am pretty sure. The commercial clips connected directly to the downrigger cable so it is not like stacking with rod and reel when recreational fishing where the mainline can get tangled when the line releases from the clip.
What do you use to check the water visibility before going out to fish?
I check the weather but not the water visibility.

@@CaptainCody7 trawlers drag a big net on the bottom behind them trollers drag wire with speeds for salmon and jigs for tuna it's a huge insult if you call a salmon troller a trawler

I tell you the truth when I look back on it all, I wonder in amazement as to how I have survived. Commercial fishing has always been an adventure and pursuit in which many have lost their lives. I would like to dedicate my story to those who came before me because without them I would not be here now.

That makes sense. I thought it was used like planner boards so you could run two or three downriggers on each side. I guess you guys have separate planers for that? I never worked on a troller boat before.

Boat I worked on in British Columbia held 25k fresh 15k frozen, The spools are called Gerties those are stabilizers, planners are usually just pieces of Styrofoam to separate or spread out the gear! Good video though! Is this in the states?

Yeah, I admit I do not know much about commercial boats since I run sportfishing charters. That is why this says basics. Commercial guys rarely make videos that explain what they do.
@@CaptainCody7 ya I know I'm planning on making a bunch of informational videos and also do some videos explaining the difference between Oregon and Alaska crabbing and salmon trolling I've been wanting to do it for a while but I still need a better editing system I just theough one pretty much in edited video up but there will be lots more coming soon
Side planers are not needed, those blue things the trolling cable runs through pull the cables out to their position. Those planers are actually called Fish.

I did not know the reels were called gurdies. Yeah, I know about the stabilizers. I thought they were used with the float bags at the time.
