How ridiculous is the Tesla Model S Plaid? The car is absolutely CRAZY!

  • I finally get to drive and review the highly anticipated Tesla Model S Plaid edition. This car is absolutely ridiculous but would most certainly take some getting used to for a average car guy. Packing more than 1000 electrified horsepower, there is no denying that this is one of the fastest cars on the road. The performance numbers are truly stagering. Would you buy the Tesla Model S Plaid?

    My Plaid story....I've owned many cars over the years. Not super high end, but top performers. At the beginning of 2021 I had a 2015 Corvette Z06/Z07, a 2018 Dodge Charger Hellcat and a 2016 AMG GTS. Of those three the GTS was by far my favorite. I read what the Plaid was supposed to do so I put a deposit on it in April. I received the Plaid on July 3rd of this year and really didn't know what to expect. I remember getting into it (delivery was contactless so I had no one to show me how it worked or what to expect) my first thought was this car is BIG! I figured out how to drive it and was convinced it would feel heavy and unwieldy like an S-Class or big sedan. Got the car on the road and put it into Plaid mode....then I hit the acclerator....oh my god....words cannot describe the performance of this car. It also felt very nimble and connected to the road. I could push the accelerator down hard and it didn't even lose control. What sort of magic was this!? This made every car in my garage obsolete. I no longer found any pleasure in driving them. Sold the Z06 to Fletcher jones and the other 2 to Phillips auto in Newport. Turns out it was a great time to sell high performance ICE cars as I got top dollar for each. This car changed my feelings towards EVs, this is the closest I have been to flying a jet :)

      1. Electric motors provide excellent traction control, because their speed can be changed quickly, at the same time, accurate feedback from the road allows a modern computer to accurately dose the engine speed. 2. The third motor (that is, two motors at the rear) allows you to select the torque on each wheel separately, which increases stability.

      @@America1st69 Too early to know for sure how long Tesla cars will last, since the oldest models out there aren't even 10 years old - and there are only 3,000 of them. You can find plenty of case studies done on middle age models with 300k+ miles and very reasonable battery degradation - and that is with the older battery technology.
      Mine is a 2019 and has an 8 year warranty on the battery against failure and excessive degradation. So, for me, if by the year 2027 I am only getting 225 miles on a full charge (down from the original 320 miles on a full charge), then the warranty applies. Tesla vehicles see the most degradation after their first year or 15k miles. Usually like 5-8% decrease based on what most owners report. After that, the degradation slows and results in additional 1-2% capacity loss each year after that.
      Using the higher values (8%) of the above degradation, a brand new Model 3 with 350 miles of range would decrease to around 320 miles of range after the first year of average (12k-15k miles) driving. If the second year results in a 5% loss, that gets you down to 305 miles of range per charge after 2 years of average driving. If you lose 2% of your current range each year after that, in 8 more years (10 total), you are likely around the 250 mile mark, which puts you at around 30% loss of capacity over 10 years of average driving. Yeah, that is a lot of loss over 10 years - but it's a Li-ion battery, so it is kind of expected.
      Your political leanings shouldn't really impact your acceptance of America companies advancing American technology and American cars while giving American people jobs within America... Don't be so un-American.

But you can turn that off if you don't like it. As you point out, there's a thicket of settings available, so I don't blame you for missing this one. After they hit over 200 miles of range, it became usable for long range drives. With 300+ range, it is good enough for the vast majority of people's use cases. From the very beginning, they had great acceleration. You had regular models going under 4 sec 0-60. Before you would need a serious sports car to get that.

    I owned a 900hp E85 blown LS car. Bought a previous gen Tesla Model S and it was quicker below 100mph than my modified LS-powered car. Above that, not as much. Ordered the Plaid and awaiting delivery - should be a big step up and I hear the top end is just insane.
    Literally watching our guy's face here - skin and flesh warping back as the G-force acts on his body. You can truly watch him sink backwards like he's on a rocket at launch.
    Regarding the looks - remember that the general shape and style of the exterior is designed for extremely good aerodynamics. This is so you can get 350-400 miles out of a single charge. That kinda precludes some of the more dramatic styling you see in a Lambo or McLaren or Ferrari. They also aren't trying to provide space for 5 people plus a trunk and other storage. So once you look at all the factors, the looks do end up being rather smooth, and more of a form-follows-function play. That said - there are a fair number of aftermarket companies that offer more dramatic visual mods.
    And this particular car - grey with black interior, dark gray wheels and black trim just adds to the lack of visual interest. A blue or red paint with white or cream interior is a little (but not a lot) spicier.
    Oh - and the trunk IS deeper - there's a second storage area under the main trunk floor. Gotta pull it up at the back.

    That was an awesome review. Gearheads need to stop and think for a second and ask themselves where the vitriolic hatred for EV's come from. It's a technology, so what's not to like? Would you be happier if your cellphone had a tiny ICE engine on the back of it so it could make a rumbling noise and have a "soul" as you're using it; feeling the vibration of its engine as you type your CZcams comment in it? How about your TV, fridge, computer, etc... A car is just about the very last commonly used personal property that is not powered by electricity. Why should you care what is powering the car? I'm sure proponents of the steam engine were just as upset with the new "internal combustion engine" powering the new horseless carriages and spelling the death knell of the nascent steam car industry and of the old steam locomotive and engine.
    New and better tech always come along and supplant older ones. That's what this is about. The push back is a top down campaign by people who benefit from the ICE industry, pushing the "car's soul" narrative in all public forums making people start repeating it thinking it's their own sentiment. To top it off you have the conservative right hating on the tech just because the libs like and say it's better for the environment. It the libs like it, it must be bad. Puhleeaaase. Ok, it's not better for the environment. It is just less harmful to the environment (every manufactured good is bad for the environment). Ask yourself, would you feel safer sleeping in a Hellcat with the engine running all night, or in a Model S with the car on all night?
    Hating on electric cars does not make you any more manly than you already are.

      And what about the failing charging infrastructure? The mining? The fact over 70 percent of charging is powered by fossil fuels? Oh how about the terrible quality control and ability to fix the car? Yeah this isnt a next step this is a stopgap till synthetic petrol.

    • @reximperatur1146
      @reximperatur1146 Před 2 lety +22

      @@darrengarcia4937 1- There really isn't a problem of failing charging infrastructure. Charging infrastructure is nascent, budding, and most likely soon to be blooming. Tesla itself already solved the problem with its supercharger network across the globe. Plus there are other charging networks out there. Most importantly, anyone with a parking space (most of suburbia USA) can plug even in a 110V outlet or get a 220V installed, if not an official EV charging unit.
      2- You're complaining about mining for a recyclable material, lithium... What about oil exploration/drilling/shipping it across oceans/refining it into gas? And once you burn gasoline into CO2, it's impossible to recapture it in the atmosphere for recycling purposes.
      3- "It takes an average of 5 kilowatt hours to refine [one gallon of] gasoline, something like the [Tesla] Model S can go 20 miles on 5 kilowatt hours." Why not skip the oil refining step and just use that electricity to power an EV instead of using it to refine oil into gas.
      4- Even if 100 percent charging was powered by electricity generated by fossil fuel, EV's would still be more efficient. One giant power plant is way more efficient than millions of ICE engines running around.
      5- Tesla is simply under a bigger microscope than other car companies because of all the FUD out there. Quality is good enough. And as a proponent of EV's in general, there are plenty out there if you don't like Tesla. But I still think Tesla is the best and king.
      Cars have become complicated things, if you think you can do better than the OEM and rebuild your electric motor or battery pack, take a crack at it. Safely. People like Rich Rebuilds on CZcams make already make a living out of fixing/modding Tesla's.
      Tesla does have plenty of service centers and will send a mobile unit to your house/work/or where ever you are if you're too far.

      And some people glamorized biplanes and WWI dogfights. Then they glamorized Spitfires and Mustangs over jets.
      A lot of what people love about performance cars is the multi sensory feeling of the noise, vibration and smell. And the user's role in making all that happen. (Especially with manual gear boxes) That is easier to identify and associate to than the performance.
      So for some the improved performance won't make up for what they lose.
      But pretend we had electric cars the past hundred years and many were as good as this Plaid. Would anyone propose making an internal combustion car?

    • @Goldsteinphoto
      @Goldsteinphoto Před 2 lety +9

      @@darrengarcia4937 Simple Darren. Buy some solar panels and charge your EV at home.
      And just keep an old ICE car around to remind you of obsolete things like oil changes, transmission fluid, air, fuel and oil filters, exhaust systems, catalytic converters, exhaust recirculation control, timing belts, fuel pumps, alternators, starting motors, belts, drive shafts, transmissions, valve adjustment. And less room.
      EVs will evolve to be cheaper as battery energy capacity increases and prices of batteries drop. Simpler production techniques and economies of scale and competition will totally destroy ICE cars sooner rather than later.

    I used to think EVs including Tesla don't "have a soul." Once I test drove one, I changed my mind very quickly. I have a Model Y Long range with the acceleration upgrade (0-60 in 4.2s), and it handles incredibly, steering is probably the best steering since the switch from hydraulic to electric power steering that I've driven, and you get used to no hearing the engine pretty damn quickly. If it was just a straight line muscle car, maybe I'd say it doesn't have soul. But it isn't. It handles better than any CUV has the right to due to its low center of gravity, and it's simply the most fun car I've ever driven including numerous BMW's, Golf R, E46 M3, and most recently an '18 Stinger GT2.

      Was it me? Just kidding. I got a Model 3 recently and bought the option for quicker acceleration. It occured a few times that I raced some cars close to supercars and lost them in the dust. Last time in Vegas,with my wife, by chance I got behind two lambos side by side at the red light (blue and yelow lambos), ready to drag. I was behind of the yellow one. I calmly put the car into "sport" mode (and my wife said "oh no") and waited until the green light. I could not push the acceleration pedal to the max otherwise I would have hit the back of the lambo. Then I went to the third lane on the right and stepped on it. I passed them both. I wish I could have seen their faces.
