- In this video we check out the 2020 Univega Rover Mesa 27.5. This is a really interesting bike that is assembled in the USA. Kent International owns Univega, as well as BCA or Bicycle Corporation of America. They paint and assembled frames from Asia and put them together in South Carolina. This means a sub $500 bike-shop-quality mountain bike has most of it's labor done stateside. This is pretty exciting to me and makes the Univega very compelling versus the other $500 bikes available.

I think that’s a nice entry level bike. My first mtn bike twenty years ago was an Univega Alpina 500 & it took a beating & actually held up well. Nice vid, brought back some memories!
Lil heavy but I ride the thing every where. Great shocks. Sturdy. . Stylish. Solid frame. ..
Can you please let me know what’s the specific stand you have installed for this bike.
Thank you for posting this, I haven't been in the market for a bike for a long time, but someone stole my old Trek bike and I'm looking for another for bikepacking.
In my research so far the Surly ECR meets all of my needed criteria, mainly the mounting options.
Bike costs are so high and was rather shocking!
The ECR costs $2k so I'm saving my money while waiting until its available in November!
Good luck!
Hey James, I got a Univega off one of my friends a while back.. wasnt to sure what i was getting into .. at that moment I thought a bike was a bike. Just started now to get into bike riding. I have a Univega Maxima Sport 29" Hybrid Bike. Kind of interested to see what upgrades or changes I can do to this bike.
I just got this bike a few weeks ago and I’ve been having problems with my chain falling of and I few minor stuff that my bike shop fixed for free but that was just hard street riding although I love the bike so far!
Glad you are fixed and enjoying
Can you tell me the rear hub size? Trying to assist someone w/ broken wheel.
@@bimmerbent I don’t know about it at all I am not a mechanic or anything close so I’m not a good person to ask
I like to look at one but cant find anybody that sells this brand.
So corrently I have a Giant toughroad gravel bike for commuting and while I do love it, sometimes I want something a little more versatile for hills, offroad etc esp living in Buffalo where the winters get very nasty. I saw this bike in grey at the bike shop for a little over 700 and I really like it, Im just wondering if 8 gears will be enough or maybe I can add more gears later.😂
Yeah while the bike shop has this for 700+ I found one for 315 online, the rm29, pretty much same bike. I'm gonna get it for the harsh winters and save up for what I really want, a Giant Talon or stance.
What is the better budget bike marlin 5 or talon 3? Looking to get an entry level bike but not sure which one.
I had both and the talon 3 was bigger and better. But I flipped them and upgraded to a Trek roscoe 7 and Giant stance.
chefboyarleezy great thanks 👍
Seen that in person and it's worth the price.
Fully agree!
Interesting bike at a great price point ($750). When I went to their website the dealer locator is “coming soon” so I don’t know where I could buy one.
In my area, This bike is $469 USD
Jamesthebikeguy You are correct. The $750 is for the one with the Rover RM which is higher up in the line up.
I want to get one just because it was made here
Assembled but yes!
Name is a bit misleading. Assembled in USA is not same as Made in USA. It is a step in right direction (given the price) but it‘s still not the real deal. And I‘m not saying that workers in cheap labor countries are less skilled, the problem is exactly in the fact that low-skilled and low-payed assembly workers cannot afford Made in USA bikes, and that is the vicious circle of corporate capitalism that disintegrates USA society.
Fairly certain in the video I make it clear it is assembled in the USA, not made. The is just to grab attention
Who are the competitors of this bike?
Bikes like the Trek Marlin 4, or the base Specialized Rockhopper.
Vitus Nucleus is the cheapest hardtail you can get that isn't a total waste of money. Otherwise you might as well but any old 2nd hand piece of junk off gumtree etc. for $100...It will get you from a to b and be about as good off road as this thing!
mention the price
In my area, This bike is $469 USD
not to get political, but trump's tarrifs have made it impossible to produce anything from raw metals in this country, such as bike frames, rims, spokes, bolts, cables, etc
the assembled in usa makes sense for now, since the individuals parts are not tarriffed, but the whole bike would be
my guess is that assembly will eventually move to mejico
Take a look at Detroit Bikes. Many of theirs are US made with US steel.
This is the worst bike I have ever purchased. Having a growing tween, we have had many of bikes over the years, and we decided to go cheap until now. Granted this is not a high quality bike, but at $500 it should have preformed better than the rest of the bikes my son has had over the years. This one 1 month in has caused a lot of stress. The chain falls off ALL the time, even just a bump in the road. He has not taken it on a dirt path, or even tried to go mountain biking with it. I brought it back to the shop 2 times, and they did a check on it. Last draw was when he was leaving for school last week, when he hit a bump in the road, chain dropped off and he went flying over the handlebars, and injured his knee pretty badly. Thankfully my friendly bike shop took this terrible bike off my hands. They said "yes, its marketed as a mountain bike, but essentially it is a road bike". As I mentioned he never took it on a dirt trail, and having a kid come home each day covered in oil is not too cool. If it's a road bike, its a poor choice as well. Terrible buy
Man that sounds like a bummer. I hope your kiddo is riding something better now.
It is a cheap Chinese Bike, Assembled in SC ?? with no Customer Support. Sorry you had to realize that "cheap" is not the answer. Only reason I am here is to find out rear hub size to assist on a repair.
That head angle looks deadly! It don't cost them nothing to change that...no tapered steerer. Acera not even designed for off road riding. No range on the cassette. Cheap freehub. This bike is for riding to the local shop. Difficult to upgrade. Terrible geometry. It's nearly the same price as a Vitus. Total waste of money imo. You'd even be better off with something 2nd hand than this!
