    Dear Jeff
    I enjoyed reviewing this race footage with you from my antipodean shores. It seems to be the largest and most eagerly anticipated crossover event in recent cycling (or maybe global) history.
    Kind regards

    I was the Rogue rider that “put on an Oscar performance”. I ride with LJ pretty frequently, and he is a much smaller rider than me, so when he was doing 35W behind me, I was still putting in an effort, but LJ being half my size, got a huge draft.
    My goal was to give my teammate enough of a gap to take it to the finish, but he unfortunately got chased down.

    These guys being cat 4 most have been feeling so good to see such high level commentary on them. Phil legit commentates the Capetown cycle tour (and TDF) pretty much annually, and even though I'm quite an ameture I had good day there, for myself, back in March so it was a big ego stroke when I go back to the replay and hear him speaking about my ride/attempt to pronounce my name. Even if I couldn't handle some minorly tactical descents and only got 12th.

    I totally agree, that scenario that unfolded with 1 lap to go was a perfect time to attack on the first corner after the start/finish line. I've found that you only have to really hold the field off for half a lap, the field starts looking at each other between 3rd and 4th (final) corner.

    New to crit racing here... Question about the first solo breakaway... From a strategic standpoint... Why do this? What is the benefit to running out ahead of the field solo, especially with 27 km to go, when it seems virtually impossible to beat the chase group for such a huge portion of the race?
    If you can't hold the lead until the end, why run out on your own and give up any opportunity for drafting? Did that rider think he was going to hold the lead till the finish by himself?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @NorCalCycling
      @NorCalCycling  Před 2 lety

      It's not virtually impossible. If your chances at a breakaway are higher than your chances in a field Sprint, you're better off trying a breakaway. Also, team dynamics

    • @williamdowling7718
      @williamdowling7718 Před 2 lety

      @@NorCalCycling understood. It just seems like if you're relying on a breakaway to win, you'd be better off doing so later on after having let the group pull you for most of the race. Then with perhaps 10km to go, you use your relatively fresh legs to mount an attack that you can sustain.
      27km solo breakaway seems unrealistic given the chase group can work together and share the wind. Does this happen frequently in the sport and I'm making myself look foolish?

    Im guessing he didn't attack since his heart rate was still at 180 bpm with 2km to go till the end, he was on the rivet. his max hr was 188 bpm at the end. No matter how slow your going if he is close to his max hr. theres not much he can do but survive and and hope for a good finish. If he would have attacked with 1 km to go im sure he would have bonked and finished alot worse. Thats just my 2 cents..

    Why do these riders make such a huge effort alone so early? I thought norcal said it was all about energy management and conservation in a earlier vid of his?

      Unless you have a huge TT motor it's probably a bad idea if you don't have teammates. Teamwork changes everything, and forcing competition to chase is always a good thing.

      I agree, I don't have teammates nor will i ever cause Im just a cat 5 going to 4 and have a life as consumed by being a care giver, with a lot of health issues, etc. But I did see in your other earlier vid complimenting a guy in one of your races that you said did it alone, and didn't have any teammates. He was a wise wheel surfer. I guess I'll have to be like that. What's your take on tail-gunning the first part of the race, then surfing up to the front in the later half?
