  • On May 18th 2017 a driver struck several pedestrians with his vehicle on a sidewalk at Times Square in New York City killing one and injuring 20 others.
When the incident happened I was fire buffing in Harlem so that the first clips in this video where made about one hour after the first units got on scene. So this means a lot of vehicles where already there when I arrived and some even started to take up as everything was well under control.
In this video you will see fire, OEM, law enforcement (local and federal) and EMS units responding to or around Times Square as well as leaving the scene during the lockdown in the area. The clips are shown in the order they were made.

I don't mean to sound rude but what is it with some of the people in NYC, they seem to have the sense of importance and can just walk in front of emergency response. One day it might be their families involved and see how casual and un caring they are i suppose.

Livefree, that's just the New York Doctrine. It gets better when its not on a holiday or in time square. Believe me, New York City on Christmas week is a shit show, especially Manhattan. The only quiet place is WTC buildings 1 and 2, or the remains of them.

AGREED - That is a nice command post bus, REALLY NICE.
Is it NYFD OF NYPD I can't tell, when it come's to emergency vehicle's from New York, I can't tell which is which. When I went to New York for the first time, I kept mistaking their police vehicles for fire vehicle's, especially the unmarked vehicle's. I am from Concord, New Hampshire and our police vehicle's including the Un-mark's are only Blue Light's - NO RED'S, So you see my confusion.

Here in Atlanta when you hear sirens you start watching for the lights and listening for the sound that determines whether or not you move or put your brakes on but if you have to move you move but you do it safe and you do it as fast as you can. Blocking First Responders on their way to a call is not taken lightly here

Nobody seems to care if they walk or drive right in front of emergency equipment. PD needs to shut the streets down and divert traffic elsewhere.

the Smarts replaced the older Go-4 3-wheeled scooters which were larger, offered less comfort and had less safety features for the driver in case of an accident, and I think the old ones were more expensive as well

sadly Bush did say when he informed Congress of 9/11 he was concerned that first responders would end up being the first at risk of terrorism operations rather than military forces. One cant exactly let a situation like this be handled by a few unbacked up police officers.

I'm not being mean when I ask this but do some people like watching and listening to emergency vehicles of all kinds?
Did the idiot driver do it deliberately or was it an accident? Either way it was a tragedy.
The next may seem silly but I'm going to ask any way. The traffic is horrendous. Who would drive there at that time of the day? My question is: how difficult is it to make a dedicated lane for emergency vehicles? The minute NYPD got someone directing traffic that was what the cop did. Why did it take so long to get someone out directing traffic?
Thanks to anyone who can/will answer any of my questions.
