It depends which state, which city/town, which income - level, what color you are, how Progressive your area is. Some of it determines A High School Experience. So, a suburban high school would be different than an inner-city high school. Small-town high school, countryside high school, etc.
Movies like this take stories from many different high schools and make it about one so it looks overly toxic. But freshman year I was told to put my cardigan back on in 90 degree classroom because apparently my shoulders would distract the boys.

I’m just going to say it. This movie was a swing and a huge miss. No where near a home run. It’s based off the book Moxie, and as someone who has read and enjoyed the book, I was very disappointed in this movie. I was disappointed that it said it was a film adaptation of this wonderful book. There where so many things wrong with this movie. First off, the moms boyfriend. I guess we just hear from him once and then never again after that dinner scene? Felt like he was a last minute shoved in story point. He didn’t even add to the story. But what got me the most was how much this movie softened Moxie. Yes, they had all the right Moxie details like the stars and hearts on the hands and the stickers, but they removed major plot points that where important. The dress code protest was supposed to be bathrobes and it was to protest the random dress code checks that happened everyday, not just the dress code on one girl. The stickers where a response to the boys game of bumping into girls then slapping their asses. One of the bigger mistakes was a principle being made a women. A huge plot point of Moxie relies on the principle being a man. The slickers on his car where retaliation to him shooting down that girls rape allegations against the football player. She did go forward and he turned her away, so she put the stickers on his car. They just swept over that plot point. The principal is viewed as bad because he is enabling the boys because he is also covering up for taking funds from other areas like the science program and putting it into the football team. Some of the plot requires the principle to be a horrible misogynist. Also, That party in the movie never happened and I feel it was a filler and could have been something more plot related from the book like the bake sale to raise money for new soccer uniforms. I get that they wanted to make a new plot and have the whole student athlete rep thing, but they got rid of other plot points from the book like the bake sale, or the moxie meeting. The whole movie felt rushed, and slapped together and not at all like the book. When I read the book I was inspired, and I did not get that from the movie. I feel like they wanted to make it more exciting, add comedy that was not needed. They really skimmed over the rape part to. They shortened the time that they focused on that plot point, even though it was supposed to be the catalyst to the conclusion. The cheerleader doesn’t just write a note, she organizes the walk out, and is the first one to walk out when the bell rings. She was downplayed in the movie and should have been portrayed as a much stronger girl because she was so scared but brave, and much more important in the book. I am so disappointed that such a masterpiece was ripped apart and ruined for a profit. Such a shame.
Totally the same here I read the book in high school and couldn’t put it down I was so excited for this when I saw it on Netflix but the whole thing felt so corny and safe and I totally agree that the principal being a women was a huge mistake and makes it feel like they’re trying to down play the harsh reality of institutionalized misogyny!
i’m glad the movie was made and i did enjoy it, i’ll have to read the book now. but i’m at least glad that now this is a movie since movies tend to get more attention than books and it’s at least bringing awareness to the issue
