- The Narrative of Hades is sprawling, captivating, and extensive. It follows the story of Zagreus and takes place over the course of dozens of runs through the Underworld with an epilogue that requires even more runs to complete. Due to how much is needed to be done to see everything the story has to offer, so let's take the time to compile all that information together to tell the story from beginning to end!

As a fun little aside, Hades has a special dialogue for you beating him on your first run. "Well, let's see. You've berated me repeatedly and often. You've lied to me. Mustered a bunch of incompetent wretches to try to kill me. But, sure, I'll grant you that you've always kept most of your anger bottled up. All that's about to change, then?" Usually he says "... Mustered your wretched forces to kill me, over and over."
First encounter* with him, yes. I wasn't sure if that dialogue was because I beat him on my first try, but now I do!
Yeah, uhhh, i noticed that too. Sure, umm, yeah, i totally kicked his ass on my first try, true story, i swear.

@@Dionysos_____Alters Never read the original greek myths? Achilles and Patroclus have a extremely close bond, beyond a normal friendship. Many have theorised they were actually gay for one another, but I personally think they were fireforged friends.

Probably the most wholesome I've seen the Olympian Pantheon.
I love the way they enmeshed actual Greek myths and contradictory stories, like the whole Zagreus and Dionysus were the same for a myth
that is true in the real story of greek mythology
Hera also hated Heracles and wanted him dead...yet nursed him alongside Athena, who was the God whom took care of him proper. So.....yeah, contradictions are a thing in mythology. @@spandansahs8816

After more than a year and +100 hours, I finally got to see the end of this story, and a lot of the little side stories too! So now it's time to dust this video off my "Watch later" playlist, and finally enjoy it.
My favourite side story is Zag and Dionysus trolling Orpheus into believing that they're related, because in many actual myths Zagreous is like a proto-Dionysus

In the actual greek myth, persephone gets kidnapped by hades when she was playing with her friends
When demeter heard of the from persephone's friends
She was sad and lonely so the earth became cold and freezy(winter)
There were no crops so the humans were devastated out of hunger
After a while persephone asked to leave and hades said yes
But before leaving hades gave persephone a pomgranate but she only ate 3 spores (or 3/12 i cant remember)when see got back to the overworld she met with her mother and her mother was so happy it became spring again
But then her mother asks if persephone ate anything while she was on the underworld and persephone replies
"Only 3 spores from a pomegranate"
And the smile from demeter's face vanished
Eating something from the underworld will make you stay there for that much time every year,eating a whole meal will make you stay there forever
Since persephone ate 3 spores she now must stay on the underworld for 3 months a year(she is queen of the underworld though)
Thats why crops can prosper when persephone isnt on the underworld but the 3 months she must stay are when demeter is sad so winter comes,zeus and hades made a deal so that persephone leaves the underworld after 3 months a year so she doesnt get stuck there forever
And thats the ancient greek myth
Don’t forget Zeus orchestrated the whole kidnapping in the first place, and hades went along with it because of his love for Persephone

There are several tens of versions of the story. In the end, greek mythology is mythology. A collection of stories, legends, religious texts, and only some philosophers wrote it down. Some stories say hades had the approval of Zeus. some show Persephone not liking the underworld and others that show that she liked hades as her husband. some show Demeter as sad and those that show her as vengeful using the mortal's demise to blackmail the other gods.
Some say hades tricked her with the pomegranate seeds and others imply that she knew exactly what she was doing when she ate them. There really is no one unified truth.
but if you look at all the stories about hades, he is literally one of the only good-guy gods of Greek mythology. He even goes around creating flower in memorial of his lovers. Imagine how many more flowers greece would have known, if Zeus did the same.

There is different versions, this is just one of them, Im pretty sure one of the versions is that Demeter did love Hades and only left once she heard what was happening to the mortals, so they actually made up the whole seeds story so that she could go back to hell after leaving to soothe her mother.
So yeah, the cannon of the game is pretty close to some of the versions of these stories.
Hell yes!!! This indie really climbed its way from unknown to game awards nominee, and showed me that games could make a story as great as its gameplay! Supergiant truly is legendary!
I've never played any of the other SuperGiant games, but I'd always heard they were really good. If Hades is any indication, I bet they are fantastic!

You did, actually. Demeter is pronounced de-meat-er. I think that’s the only character whose name you didn’t mispronounce.
I believe it, but all the characters pronounced it Deh-Meh-Ter in the game so I kept it for the consistency.

@@SquatchGamingChannel okay, cool. I understand why you pronounced it that way now. However, it is actually pronounced the way I said it. If you have read the Percy Jackson books (which are also heavily influenced by Greek mythology), I believe that they pronounce it that way in audio books. I would also recommend checking that series out if you haven’t already. They are a fun coming of age story, combined with fantasy, some elements of science fiction, as well as some interesting depictions of some more obscure Greek myths.

I love greek mythology and have always been super into it. Hades & Persephone's story is one of my favorites. I love how this game kept a lot of the original story in there but added/changed a lot also to make a really compelling story for the game. I think you did an awesome job explaining it!
After getting kicked in the stomach by Katana Zero's story I'm glad this story is a lot more wholesome.
SO in a matter of speaking Nyx is the mother, yeah persephone give birthed to him, but Nyx given life unto Zagreus.
To anyone who talks about the true form of the myth, bear in mind that what people tend to think of when they read myths is a snapshot. Myths don't come into existence fully formed, but rather they change and evolve repeatedly over centuries of cultural progress. Myths aren't set in stone. For more on how that happens, I recommend Overly Sarcastic Productions videos, in particular the one about Hades and Persephone.
Red did mention that there's no canon in myth and that they are all basically fanfiction that survived through oral tradition.
It's like language: once it never changes, it's dead.

Did some checking about Zagreus, in the myths he's actually the son of Persephone and Zeus (Side note: Persophone is actually the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, not a mortal) so in actuality, Zagreus' Father is also his grandfather and Mother is his half-sister\cousin.
Actually, there's a bit of controversy on his parentage. People believe it to be Zeus, because one of Hades divine epithets is "the dark Zeus". So it's most likely Hades, but because of a translation error, people believe it's Zeus
Your thinking of Dionysius. Zagreus in acident Greek Mythology has very little info on him only that he was the son of Hades and Persephone, he was born in the (i may be missspeling it) Zagreos montains, and that he seemed that he and Dionysius were once worshiped as the same god like Pan and Hermes. Its really fuzzy infact the game actully has a quest centering around this.
Sort of. He's the son of Zeus in the Orphic hymns but not in exoteric ancient Greek religion.
Orphism is a specific and esoteric branch of Greek mythology that was basically a mystery cult.
I have a theory about why Zagreus is bound to the Underworld: It's the only reason he's alive.
Nyx says that she revived a stillborn Zagreus and it took her so long that Persephone left in grief by then. I believe the only way she was able to revive him was through binding him and his godly self to the Underworld.
While Thanatos or Hades or any other Underworld resident would feel somewhat inconvenienced by the upper world, Zagreus would feel even worse off because of his bond to the Underworld.
If he was already dead at birth wouldnt he belong in the underworld by default?
My guess she did this by bathing him in the River Styx, hence why he is now the god of blood.
It's been my headcanon for a while that if Zagreus' life is tied to some part of the Underworld, then that has something to do with why the Phlegethon is overflowing so majorly into Asphodel. Like some sort of balance was upset
@@rachelthornton4442 its probably why zagreus just cant survive long,if he tried surviving on the surface,it would be suffering not even he or his godly body could bear,thus either than or the river styx eases his suffering and ushers him back into the underworld in order to keep him from such indescribable pain

The one big problem I had how they did my boy Hypnos dirty also absense of Apollo and Hera AND Haphestus. Hypnos is one of the oldest kids Nyx has and quite powerful I mean the guy put Zeus to sleep twice. They got his kindness right and I like how they made him a sassy asshole XD but the treatment of him was abysmal.

The first time I read the story of Hades and Persephone was in a little blue book I got while I was in middle school which was probably meant for children even younger than I was. I enjoyed it so much I would always wonder what the "real" version of the myth was like.
. . . The reality of that being, fragmentary, full of ambiguity and contradiction from retellings and the distortion of time, containing lots of unconsensual sex, and written in Greek and Latin.
In other words, there was no "authentic" version of the story that my child brain was imagining. These larval musings fell away, but eventually resurfaced from the underworld catacombs of my mind in the form of a grown butterfly that was my own telling of the story, and was not unlike the one in Hades.
Thank you for the video! When I first started playing I skipped most dialogues. I usually don't care about stories in games, but this one eventually grabbed my attention. So this video was really helpful!

I find this to be a much more digestible version of Greek mythology than actual Greek mythology.
I can see this as a series for some reason.
I wish you actually did get to tend to the cottage after you beat hades! Going to Greece was my favourite part of the whole run and I think it would be funny if you could have upgraded it like you do with the house of hades.
And now the story continues trailer for Hades II is out and looks like we will be getting the second chapter to this.

So how many runs did it take for you to beat Hades the first time?
I don’t remember exactly, but I think it was around 10. The Bow fit my play style really well, and I got really good drops for it (Reflect, Charge up Volley, Consecutive hits with Volley do more damage). I think I narrowly beat him even with all of that.
However, the more you face Hades and upgrade Zagreus, the easier it gets. It is much easier for me to clear through the game now than it was when I first started.
