Set your charging rate to 8 Amps on the Tesla.
Charging at 12Amps will overload the Yeti 1400, and that's why you had issues. 8 Amp is the limit.
Also, you should have got the Yeti 3000, which has twice the capacity, and then a 12A charger would be fine.

The ground pin is bonded to the neutral inside the outlet. Just like in a home where the grounding wires are bonded to the neutral at the main (first) cut off point in the system. For those confused why it worked: In a (code compliant) North American household primary panel (main breaker box) the neutral bus bar and the ground bus bar (think of it like a power strip) are connected what that means is every neutral wire is already electricly connected to ground, (the two rectangular prongs on standard electric outlets are live and neutral while the circle is ground), so in order to trick the charger the electrician just a connected the neutral and ground in the little box the electrician gave Dan. The perpose of grounding is that every exposed piece of metal that is near electrical working is grounded so if a wire ends up coming loose and touching that same bit of metal rather than the electricity passing through you, the user and killing you, it passes through the ground wire to the ground. Dan is cercumventing said safety measure it a way that may be deadly.
That box creates a bootleg ground which is not safe, it may work for simple charging but if the yeti box isn’t grounded with a separate electrode it’s not exactly safe, because there’s no where for fault current to go!
Actually it is safe as there is a ground being produced in the same way as a house! If you open up an electrical panel there is a DIRECT connection between neutral and ground. In theory the only thing unsafe in this set up would be no actual ground to the ground, however the entire system is isolated, not connected to any thing, therefore there is no circuit. I don’t see any fault with this setup. Now if it was a GENERATOR with a metal frame, now there is a potential circuit, however this setup is still fine as long as the generator is hooked into a ground from the grounding lug. In fact that outlet is the only way to get generators to charge an electric vehicle unless the manufacturer did it internally (not many do, some do, but not many)

I think the issue is that you're starting out with a relatively charged battery in the Tesla, you should run the same experiment with the Tesla battery pack at a lower charge eg. 25-50mi to see how many more miles you'll gain in range. Also, there may be a way to ground the portable charger by using the stake in the ground method (ask your elecrician).

this is not safe there is no ground.
Yes it is
RedDragon0724 Its nearly impossible to have a ground fault unless you leave the battery and the ground lift out in the rain. But, if there is a ground fault it would break some stuff because the ground wire is crossed over to the neutral wire so it can cause the charger to be backfed if there is a ground fault.
In summary... It's not safe.
This is perfectly safe for you, not so safe for the battery pack. But chances of a fault are very low.
Maybe try keeping the door closed so the car turns itself off and doesn’t use a lot of energy? Also, turn off the ac if you keep the door open for so long. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Mi Hai no kidding. He keeps pinging the thing checking on the SoC also.
If only you knew how electricity functioned. Your life would be so much easier. Just need 2 extension cords plugged into 2 DIFFERENT circuits. = 220v at 30amps Every new extension cord adds 110v and at least 15amps. (If you need to ground carry a grounding rod with you and jumper cables. )
This only works so long as you have proper phasing from the other circuits... I can't remember which is dangerous (both in same phase, or counter phase), but I do know that it makes a huge difference... One will blow up whatever you connect it to, and the other works just fine..
@@HDFoxra If it isn't going to work, ur out a few bucks for extension cords. It won't damage the Tesla. Too many safe guards built in. It just won't charge. Pretty sure the Tesla would fix the phase issues if there are any. A little over my head though.

Will a converter that is connected to a solar panel (that you place on the roof of a tesla) and tesla battery...charge it??
really not too bad.. on a model 3 you would get 2 to 3x that range.. also let's not forget in a situation where you would use this you would be driving slow which means your efficiency would be better than what the car is estimating.
Ok, I admit those two points are true. But those numbers don't substantially change the overall conclusion calculation.
My man listening to post malone
This is a 1400 Wh pack so even with no energy loss you are looking at 4.66 miles (averaging 300 Wh/mi in a Model X). Factor in the conversion loss (going DC to AC to DC again), and the heat loss as heard from the video by the fans running, I'm not surprised that you only got 2 miles. I think the trick to getting a "gas can" equivalent is finding a way to keep it DC to DC and charge it slow enough that the battery doesn't heat up as much. Keep up the good work!
Sweet something I've been wondering thank you
You actually spend so much energy taking that box around that it makes no sense for the small amount that it would give back to the car
You could push it to the SC faster than waiting for this to charge.
The battery pack would be good for lights, computer, radio, etc. in a power failure or at a picnic. Might run your fridge for an hour or two IF it could handle the startup current (depends).

Potentially if you had a lightning strike and you don’t have an isolated ground, then it will greatly damage the car. That outlet adapter thing your friend made combines neutral and ground together, which in a home setting is ok to do temporarily. It’s the same thing that a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter does. Neutral and ground are essentially the same thing. You’ll see this inside any breaker panel- All the white (neutral) wires connected to earth ground. The bare ground wire is just an extra ground for protection.

Nice testing and good to know.
Thanks for doing this test; now I know.
So it basically kept up with the power consumption the car uses at idle?
Well, basically, yes, but that's only in a warm climate which is already near the right temperature to charge a battery, so the battery actually collected one or two miles of range. In a cold climate or a very hot climate, the Tesla would use more energy than the small battery pack could provide.
Furthermore, Teslas have a software problem in which they will shut down in such a way that you cannot provide enough energy to start it up again with such a small battery pack. The only niche case this is useful is if you notice the car says "1 miles range left" and you know you need 2 miles to get to the closest charger, so you start charging it right away with this tiny battery pack, before the exterior temperature (weather) messes you up. That is extremely unlikely.
Chill on the edits 😂

Also have a small generator with about 3500 Watts of peak continous power.
Usually that's used for our party-and-barbecue shed out in the forest or as emergency power if it goes out because it runs really quiet and has a pretty low fuel consumption, even on peak power.
With that bad boy, the Up charges about 15-20% an hour.
Obviously the battery is considerably smaller but
Still.
The best solution is if Tesla, somehow via software update and maybe an output/input adapter cable, we can all charge Tesla to Tesla!
All you need to do is to flag down another Tesla or maybe call a friend with a Tesla and charge enough to get to the closest supercharger. The Tesla battery is obviously much bigger than what you have in the video. I'm not an electrician but this would be a very good solution.
You are the best
The Anker power bank didnt work because it the AC output is only 120 Watts. The GoalZero bank handles 2000 watts Peak and 1500 watts Constant.
Dan: this cable needs to be grounded
Me: send it to its room
Not grounded but also not dangerous the battery pack is an isolated supply grounding it wouldnt do anything thats why the pin isnt connected to anything in the first place
You STILL don't have a grounded outlet. There is a reason that the software needs a grounded outlet... So what you've done is risk breaking your $100,000 car for a solution that isn't even necessary... The battery automatically reserves extra miles for emergency situations, AND Tesla provides free towing for emergencies, which would be faster than this charger.
I don't understand why you would just want to *guess* on these things, rather than actually finding the correct answer.
As well as the electrocution reasons as now the whole exterior of the car and the exterior of the lithium ion battery pack could potentially be live at 110/240v ac or above 400v dc volts or worse
extremely dangerous (on top of potential damage to car)
you should have used a $400 kolher inverter genirator
Would it be possible to pack small but good solar panels and if you get low be able to charge from the side of the road. With just the solar panels that would fit in the trunk or frunk. Maybe a control panel but if it could charge a camping trailer or mobile van, it could charge a car... right?
