  • Let’s explore threading wood! We will take a close look at the Beall Tool Company Wood Threader which is now distributed by Lee Valley Tools. We have been using these tools to create wooden threads for several years. I always feel like a machinist when I am incorporating wooden threads into projects, and it is always fun to make giant screws and nuts! I find this process stirs my mechanical creativity and it is always rewarding to build specialized tools, fixtures and jigs in your own shop!

when cutting the threads with the router, doesn't the wobble/play in the fit affect the quality of the threads?

Yes, if the dowel wobbles it creates chip out on the threads. I use both hands or a shop stand on long dowels to keep it as stable as possible.
A tighter fit in the die can help but too tight of a fit will not work with a nut (female) threads. A little practice is all it takes. Thanks for watching and excellent question.
