Thank you very much. I had the Jig in the mail yesterday
This just gave me an idea for an invention. Thank You. ❤️ ❤️
Tamar, You've actually explained this much better than Katz-Moses
Phenomenal work Tamar! Really cool to see your first set on video with my jig! Not an experience I get very often.
Thanks so much! I was definitely nervous to film my first set but the jig made it so easy 😉
This has to be invaluable for you both
What’s the chances of getting one in Australia looks like a great jig to have in the workshop?
@@paullobwein1632 we ship worldwide my friend
Jonathan Katz-Moses awesome I might grab some saws off you as well 😉 how’s the COVID situation affecting you both?
I appreciate to much your kind support Lady
Great thanks for your videos
A greeting from Spain
I am 60 years old, 30 years old as a carpenter and I still learn from you, thanks again
That’s so awesome to hear. Thanks so much!
Ordered the katz-moses dovetail guide and a Japanese saw, watching your video and going to the garage
Thanks for this demo Tamar. Excellent commercial for a very useful product.
Glad you liked it!
I really appreciate the videos from the perspective of learning, that really helps us newbies
Loved your glue and saw dust idea in lieu of wood filler. Avid fan here. Please those great videos coming. Greetings from the Philippines.
Glad you liked it! I’ll try!
There IS a mathematical rule for making dovetails! I've learned it! But a long time ago, so I have to look it up. The most important number is that of the thickness of the board or panel that is getting dovetailed. The rest is relative proportions and to aquire those....the mathematical rule. Your dovetail exercise took me me back some thirty years ago, when I learned to make them. As learning material we used scraps of pine wood. Soft, cheap, easyily maleable. And we we did everything with a ruler, the formula, a pencil, a square, a saw and a chisle. The very old fashioned way. When you know the formula... you can dovetail all measurements! Thickness, width... easy peasy.
I like the way you do these videos in a relaxed in no stress way. Very enjoyable
Thanks! So glad you like them
really appreciate that you show the real process (warts and all) of trying something new. It would be easy enough to edit all of that out, but it really helps to see that this stuff is hard.
There are a bunch of videos on using magnetic jigs, but yours is the best one I’ve seen. Mainly because you are a complete novice at cutting dovetails. Most all other videos are by people who are already experts at cutting d/t’s. You happily admit you are not, so we get a good demonstration of how helpful these jigs really are. Very good from start to finish.
Yup! This was my first time ever cutting them by hand!
Lady. I think you did a pretty good job.
Professional in action. Amazing. Thank you so much.
Sorry, screwed last comment up with fat fingers. Suffice to say super impressed with self taught skills, while raising family and taking care of a good husband. Inspired by your channel, God bless!
Your dovetails were extremely well done for a first attempt, even without the Katz-Moses jig (I have one and I love it.). As I live in North Carolina, I was very privileged to recently attend a dovetailing class with Roy Underhill in Pittsboro, NC. Roy of course gave us a lot of great history on dovetails and he emphasized that while we always want them to be "perfect", they certainly do not necessarily have to be so. The folks in times past who made furniture by hand in production did not have the luxury of time to make "perfect" dovetails and yet their furniture is still around a century (or two) later :). You have one of the top woodworking channels on CZcams and I always look forward to the next edition.
Wow. That must have been an amazing experience. Goals. For sure! Thanks!
I have always been interested in the many possible way of joining wood together. I believe that what drew me to your channel was what I remember (not always reliable) as the “Impossible wood joint”. That was truly amazing. I now have confidence that I can make dovetail joints with this jig. What a great tool.
You continue to inspire me as a woman woodworker! Thank you!
That’s so awesome to hear!
Looks really great. Thank you.
very helpful video, not just for the dovetail but also for the vise with clamp over the counter ... i'm going to buy one like it. Thank you very much.
Glad you found it helpful! Check out my moxon vice video! You might like it!
Wow. That was a lot of work! You know your stuff!👍👍👍👍
Thanks for taking the time to make such a great video.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
Thanks for showing the imperfections! I'm starting my first dovetail project this week, and it's nice to have the reminder that imperfect isn't the end of the world. (Especially since I'm just building a box to hold some car jack stands.)
Thanks. I am about to embark on dovetails journey myself. I was looking at purchasing Jonathan’s jig. Looks great👍
I'm excited to give this a try! Just ordered the KM guide. Thanks for the video.
I can hardly wait for your video on hand-cut dovetail "draws"! I don't know how you do it, but you always seem to impress me with great projects and presentation.
Hahah! Maybe soon! And thanks so much! Really appreciate that
Thank you!! I learned from you today and I’m grateful! J K-M is a great teacher as well!!
Awesome!
JKM for the win!
I wish I were as smart as him. Such a smart design.
You are fab, my woman woodworker favorit.
Love to see your videos, keep on making them.
Willy from Belgium.
👍👍👍
Ha! Thanks so much! Appreciate that
Another excellent video. Very clear. very helpful comparison. Thanks very much.
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
Explanations fantastic
Oh my goodness, I've fallen in love you, I've watched some videos yours and I've loved, these are amazing. You are superb! Congratulation, I want to become like you!
Great job Tamar! Can't wait to see the final product!
Thanks so much!!
When I use my Katz Moses jig I clamp it to the workpiece, gives me a free hand, particularly when cleaning up, also you can clamp to the front or rear of the workpiece to keep the jig flush, excellent video, I will be making your shooting board soon, best idea I have seen yet, thanks.
Tamar, enjoyed watching the making of dovetail joints ( handmade) . Katz has invented this great tool plus he is also a great artist in wood working 😊recently saw his inlaid joints it was amazing. Thank you Tamar😊
Glad you liked it
Thanks for doing these first time projects!
Glad you like it!
Great job Tamar and you explain everything so well!!! I would love to learn how to make dovetails. You have inspired me to give it a try!
Thanks! It’s really not so hard! You should def give it a go
Tamar, you did an amazing job! 😍👌🏻 Congrats on your first hand cut dovetails! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks! I’ve caught the bug! Ha
Sold me on that jig, too. I watch Jonathan's videos often, and hemmed & hawed about that jig and his stop block for a while- international shipping adds up- but your immediate success with the jig and how useful it was tipped the balance. Recent subscriber, really like what I've seen so far, that waterfall mitre joint table was absolutely beautiful! Keep up the great work!
Awesome! Thanks so much! Really appreciate that!
I am going to combine Jonathan Katz-Moses' dovetail jig with Rob Cosman's method of transferring the tail kerfs to the pin board with his saw-toothed dovetail marking knife. It should be the best of both worlds! Great video, by the way.
I would love to see the results of that!
Rocking it as always Tamar. I follow Johnathan as well & after watching this I decided to finally buy the dovetail jigs.
BTW my dovetails look pretty darn bad so I'm obsessed to make them perfect & you just inspired me to do so. You are a true inspiration.
Keep rocking it my friend.
Thanks! That’s awesome. I hope it works out for you! It’s such a smart design.
You did a damn good job on those dovetails. Great video.
Well done ......it 's all about practice and eventually you wont even bother with the jig . Thumbs up!!
Thanks so much! It’s def less frustrating to practice knowing the angles are correct. Ha
Not bad at all. Better than my first time. Practice, and you will get really good at this!
Thanks! Yeah I was surprised at how good they were. Maybe something about the pressure of it being on camera. Ha
This was such a clear way to show how....much I am never going to try to cut dovetails without a jig! ;) Great video!
Haha! Thanks! It’s such a smart jig
Nice! I gotta say though if you haven't watched any Frank Klausz videos on dovetailing it's like being a rock and roll fan without knowing about the blues.
Well Done Tamar!!!
Thanks so much!
Thanks. You did well. I just bought one of his jigs. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Excellent video.
Thanks!
The first set is excellent for your first time!
Thanks so much!
I have to say, that's a pretty amazing jig! And that's pretty awesome for a first try at dovetails. I wish mine looked that good the first time around....
Thanks! Maybe it has something to do with the pressure of it being on camera. Ha.
Great job Tamar. I learned a lot. Thanks
Awesome to hear! Thanks!!
Awesome job on cutting your dovetails. 😍😍
Thanks!
Nice video. I’m glad you used the jig first to show the difference
Thanks! Yeah. It was really cool to see the difference
Well done, thanks!
Thanks!
Paul Sellers would be proud of you.😊 He'd probably encourage you to ween yourself off of the jigs where possible, though that is a nice jig. I have a Bencrafted Moxon kit I need to turn into a vice someday. Someday. Great demo!
Thanks! ☺️☺️
Practice makes perfect... In my own case, using a jig helped me build confidence to where doing them by hand became very easy... Thanks for sharing... Great video
Thanks! Totally agree! I think the jig is kind of like a teacher. Helping with muscle memory and all that
Hello
Hopefully in my country we could find tools so great that this
Excellent job
A hug from Colombia
Thank you
Hope you can find them too. Thanks
Really I love your work especially wood joint awesome amazing
Thanks so much!
I prefer without the jig gives it natural flaws showing it was done raw. Love your work as always. Nice work.
Thanks! I hear that! I’m a perfectionist though. Me and flaws don’t do well together. 😂
Fred, I see we are of a mind! The flaws I don't despair for the world to see, the little inconsistencies that advertise hand craftsmanship, are not at the glue surfaces. I am ashamed by mis-cuts and gaps. A little less so at overruns down to the gauge line, at least for drawer sides that are usually hidden. I like the slopes to be consistent, and I like the spacing to be fairly even, but I just go with my eye on those. If I cut the tails first, tilting the work in the vise helps as it is easier to judge a vertical as you cut. I don't mind if people use an aid to keep their tool aligned, as I am not above using a block of wood to keep my paring at a right angle, for example. And, any nineteenth century craftsman would use an angled guide block to mitre a moulding stuck on a door stile or sash muntin.
3x3Custom - Tamar oh I am a perfectionist as well. But flaws give it a nice character depends on how you look at what perfectionist point of view is 😉.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 very nice work!
Thanks so much Brian!
Absolutely love the way you have a go! You go girl don’t let anything or anyone stop you!!!😏🤭
Ha. I won’t.
Wow! That first attempt is amazing!! Congrats!
Thanks! ☺️
@@3x3CustomTamar No. Thank you! You have inspired me to try making my dovetails by hand, instead of cheating and using a router jig! I'm awaiting a fret saw and the dovetail jig you used to come in the post.
great work just got the jig
Awesome
Good work
Thanks!
I’ve used the Katz-Moses jig for 12 months and its great. Practice helps too:-)
Awesome. It’s such a smart design
I'm super impressed with both dovetails! My first 20 dovetails didn't come out nearly as nice. Keep up the good work.
Ha! Thanks so much! Maybe something about the pressure of it being recorded for all to see 😂
Check you out! 😃 Hand cut’n some dovetails, awesome! That jig looks pretty slick too... gonna have to pick one of those up 👍🏻
Haha thanks! It’s such a smart design.
Great job on your first attempt even with out the jig, very impressed! Keep up the great work.....subscribed!
Awesome. Thanks so much!
The more you do them the better you get. I have the Katz-Moses jig also and it does a great job. Also have the David Barron ones as well. You did a great job!
Thanks! Hope to master it one day!
Paul Sellers has great videos on cutting dovetails holding the saw and chisel as well.
I’ve watched all his videos a while back. I should probably rewatch them
another great video. great tips. and very handy jigs/tools you used there 🙂
Thanks so Much! So happy you like it!
And.... you became a pro....😁
Dear.... lovely!
Many thanks!
Ha! Thanks!!
3x3Custom - Tamar not joking ... better than mine...!
Anyhow... you did it .... and that is what matters!
The “gap” is just a detail.... an experiment!
Thxs
I loved your idea to make tails board with a router table, I don't have a shoulder plane... so, I'm using your idea... lol... greetings from Brazil.
Belle démonstration bravo salut Jeannot 🛠🙂
Thanks so much!
Fantastic work, Tamar~! I too have never made any hand-cut dovetails. I recently purchased the Katz-Moses jigs, but have not used them yet. Seeing your video gives me a little more confidence to get started~! Thanks for the great video~! :-)
Thanks! That’s awesome. It was a pretty fun experience to figure out
Definitely the Jig, even for a first time they look good
Thanks! The jig def made it easier
I like your projects thanks
Thanks! Appreciate that!
Thank you very informative video
Glad you liked it!
Great Job Tamar! Nice review of the JK-M Dove Tail Jig!
Thanks! It’s such a cool jig
You can obtain a dovetail router bit which will give you also prefect dovetail cuts
nice 👍 great job Tamar
Thanks so much!
3x3Custom - Tamar you’re Welcome 😉 my friend
Rob Cosman has tome good videos on making dovetales as well
Wow *applause* great job on both. Been thinking about getting one of those jigs myself. Really enjoy your videos and you have a way of making it all seem more approachable. I will share something that changed how I sawed particularly on something that wasn’t going to be getting a bunch of post assembly sanding. “Whatever direction saw you use, saw away from the face”. Basically if using a pull saw, you would put the face/show side of your piece away from you. Western/push saw, face towards you. Even if it’s a fine saw, it has a tiny bit of grain tear out in the direction it cuts. Helped my sawing and if it helps you as well, awesome. Keep up the great videos
Thanks!
Fantastic!
Thanks!
Tamar you did a very good job on those dovetails! 👍🏻 Jig or no jig I wouldn’t try it! 🤣 Thank you for sharing!
Haha! Don’t say that! Just give it a go!
I've been doing exactly this but with mortise and tenons. Just cutting and fitting two together over and over trying to get better at it. Practice makes perfect, and eventually I can use it on a Paul Sellers bench stool I want to make.
Going to have my brother bring me one of the Katz-Moses Jigs when he comes over at Christmas, but I've been doing my dove-tails for years without and filling in the occasional crack with sawdust(which J. Katz-Moses also teaches you to do, lol...) Great job though Tara...cheers...rr Normandy, France
That’s a great present to bring over! It’s such a smart design. Hope it works out for you!
I have that same vise. I found I got infinitely better holding power after following the instructions and mounting a piece of wood on each side. It also cut down on the occasional marring. I have access to a Moxon vise now at the shared workshop I go to but I still use the blue one at home and it works almost just as well. Might want to give that a shot before committing to the Moxon vise.
Yeah. It’s actually been sitting in my shop for 3 years and this was my first time using it. Ha. I’m def going to add some wood to the jaws.
Lo que mas me gusta de tus video es tu exelente trabajo
Thanks!
Like driving to a new destination with a GPS. You get there ok, but don't learn the route. Try a few times without and you begin to know your way around , even the back roads. Everything takes time to learn. Your first free-hand effort was actually fantastic Tamar. With a little persistence...
Ha! True. But I still use waze to get around my neighborhood. Ha
You just convinced me to buy Jonathan's jig. It's on the way ;)
Hope it works out for you too!
A couple years ago I took a class on how to make a small wooden box -- not with dovetails but with mortise and tennon. The ends were inset so that the sides could have full four sides mortises.
The big take home lesson for me is that I can't saw to a line -- I'm very nearsighted so it was hard to see the lines while being far enough away that my head and saw weren't in the same place at the same time.
The solution was to make a rough cut with the saw, not cutting to the line but on the waste side if it, and then chiseling to the line.
The chisel us a much more accurate tool than a saw, especially an unguided coping saw.
Sounds like a fun class
fabuloso trabajo , preciosa 💕😍
Adoro seus vídeos....
Parabéns adorei ...sucesso pra vc.
Thanks..... I think.
Onother great video fabulous
Great job
Thanks so much!
So the moral of the story is........... get and use this Jig.....I get it, and why not, it makes sense for quick, easy and clean dove tails. I like it. Thanks for that.
It def made the whole process a lot easier
Can't have been easy trying your first dovetails whilst filming at the same time. Great job.
Ha! Nope. No it wasn’t. It was also 90 degrees in October.....
@@3x3CustomTamar Then a second well done, we rarely see those kind of temperatures in the UK.
Intense! If, someday, I become as brave as you, I will try to hand cut dovetails. I will definitely order that jig though! For now, box joints work well. LOL. Thanks Tamar. Always fun watching your videos.
Glad you liked it! Ha. If it ain’t broke....
Veri good beautiful ensamble from Chile ⚒️⚒️
Thanks so much!
