  • This is a recording of the poet Humberto Ak'abal from the 2001 Minnesota Men’s Conference reading his poems with Miguel Rivera and Robert Bly. Humberto recites in both the K'iche' (Maya) language and in Spanish. The poems are translated into English by Miguel Rivera. The poetry comes from a soul deeply connected to the world. As is observed, the poems are not written to or about nature; they come out of her.
This reading occurred on September 12, 2001, the day after the attacks on the World Trade Center.
Humberto Ak'abal passed away in January of 2019.
"If the memory dies, the future also dies."

Founded by Robert Bly in 1984, the Minnesota Men’s Conference celebrates the telling of old stories, the gifts of poetry and music, and opening our hearts to grief, wildness, and joy. We all want richness and meaning in our everyday lives; this six-day conference in September is a unique opportunity to speak honestly in a community of men.
