- “Emma” is a DIY R/C sailboat made of plywood from plans found at:
www.bearospaceindustries.com/b...
This video shows “Emma” sailing, and gives you a close look at some of her details. “Emma” is one meter (39-3/8”) long, weighs 6.1 kg (13-1/2 lbs). Her mast, fin, and rudder are removable for easy transport.
You can make your own sails for “Emma” with tips from my DIY sailmaking video:
• RC Sailboat Build - DI...
Or you can purchase sails made just for “Emma” from respected model sailmaker Rod Carr:

We just love how neat craftsmanship you got there, looks so neat and hopefully that traditional way of building RC sailboats will be carried on. ❤
What magnificent craftsmanship. I must have a crack at building this sailboat. It brings back memories of my childhood when my brother and dad used to take our yachts to a local park.
Nice hat, nice boat and nice banjo music Mister. I can see you've spent some time building that beautifully finished craft. My hat's off to you.
I love this boat design as well as the schooner
Loving the accompanying Banjo music with your video's Gary.
Thank you for your RC sail efforts, I'm a newbie to RC sailing and your descriptions are much appreciated. Hope you're well and had a great Thanksgiving 2021. I'm subscribed and will see all your past videos. You are an inspiration.
Hello, Gary. Just waiting for my plans for your lovely Emma to arrive here in the UK. Such a beautiful sloop and you've built her magnificently. If I can get mine anywhere near as nice I'll be overjoyed. Peter
Such a nifty sail boat, just fantastic. Great build!
Very nice. Particularly impressed by the design of the fittings.
beautiful craftmanship! ive just aquired my first sailer a few months ago, a swedish albin cumulus built by albin marine and the constructor was Peter norlin, cant wait to get on the water!
lovely model and outstanding craftsmanship!
Thank you sir. For the beautiful simple yet elegant little boat. Also for the details of rigging it.
Man, thats a nice design, simple and good looking.
Very nice boat. Sails great, and looks great.
BEAUTIFUL Gary!
The on board video showing the two Emma's racing is awesome to say the least!
And the sailor and the bar bowline had me howling with laughter! Next time the 'rabbit' comes up through the hole I'm a gonna whack it!
Very clear and informative rigging info as well.
I am back at my own E.Irene build just recently and look forward to getting her ready for the water!
Cheers n Beers from Vancouver Island!⛵️⛵️⛵️🍻
Hi Jim, Thanks for that, really good to hear from you! Glad to know you are back to your schooner build, looking forward to her sailing. The poor rabbit was due for some time off.
Fantastic boat building and video presentation.
A very nice sailboat, i like it a lot. I got to build one of these. Well done!
Beautiful work!
Practical, simple, and beautiful
Thank you for the great video and all the great design tips. :)
beautiful!
Simple and beautiful!
Beautiful boat!
Very fine details!
I love all your sail tales videos!!!!!😁😁😁😁
What a great boat and video Thank you for sharing.
My favorite boat, I just watch to keep me in the spirit , always a bit of joy>
She is fast!! Excellent boat!!
This ist just wonderful. I hope i can get myself to build „Emma“ one day. (Emma happens to be the name of my latest grandchild)
You‘ve got a new fan!
Greetings from Germany.
Jörg
Very nice, simple, and beautiful
thanks for your videos Gary
Many thanks for your detailed reply. Regards, Jim.
Awesome video!
Just beautiful.
I make model schooners and gaff rigged model boats, but yours sail much faster then mine , well done ! :-)
A lovely boat, not too complex and obviously enjoyable to sail and watch.
In the UK the bowline is tied with the rope ending outside the loop, ie the bunny rabbit comes up the hole, goes the other way around the tree then back down the hole.
Very nice...classic!

Lovely craft you have built Sir. It sails incredibly well. Also would you tell me the name of the catchy banjo track on the video please.
Thank you for sharing.
love it!!❤❤❤
Very very very cool I want one.
I like the portability of a footie... and I love the looks of Emma with that Sprig Rig (learning something every day). Logical conclusion? build a Footie Class Emma - and share the pics with you! Thank you dude - also for the bowline lesson.
Such a beauty.. 👍
Hi, what a beautiful boat. I must say your craftsmanship is outstanding and i look in envy☺. I want to make one and I was wondering if you would show how the winch system works on Emma.
Hi Edwin, Thanks for your comment. The sail control on Emma is accomplished with a SAIL ARM SERVO (HiTec HS-765HB) rather than a winch system. The servo arm simply pulls the sheets in, and wind in the sails pulls the sheets out..
I regret having opted for a winch servo - I am having a hard time finding the right length of string for the winch loop, and nowhere in CZcams can you find a tutorial on this basic technique to control sails... I will eat up the 250 shekels it cost me, but buy an arm servo for my next project.
Aharon Konforti, kill two birds with one stone...
Get the new servo arm for Emma...
Build the IRENE for using the winch servo!
Gary would like that!☺️
I really enjoy his voice
Excellent
I wish I could build things that beautiful
You can. Free time, patience and a desire to acquire the needed skills. Do not fear failure, often it can be the best teacher. If you are attentive and persist every effort will be better than the last. And have fun in your modeling, always have fun. For if their is no fun, then it is work!
How could anyone give a video like this a thumbs down? :/
Hermoso, compre los planos y lo construire en Argentina. Muy bellas lineas en obra viva y muerta y un aparejo con velamen muy estilo antique. Saludos Cordiales.
Buenas tardes te contacto por que leí que has comprado los planos
Yo he intentado pero no puedo acceder
Te consulto me los podrías vender soy novelista y quisiera armarlo a mi nieto
Gracias por tu tiempo y disculpa el atrevimiento
I wish you had shown how the servo controls the sheets.
That's a beautiful Model. Respect!
Love the waves it makes on 1:00,, like a real boat.
super je vais essayer !
Awesome, would love to buy one already built, is it possible? I am in the United States, thanks again.
Hallo Garry! I am building this Boot in this Moment. It is soon ready!!!!!
should offer this as a precut kit
Thank you.
Definitely a next build coming up!.... Those white sails, are they actual separate panels that are sewn together?
Hi Jim, Yes the white sails are made up of separate panels sewn together.
First class job by Rod Carr at carrsails.com They perform really well.
Lovely boat! but my question is about the music. What's that banjo tune?
For viewing the sailing shots, set your playback speed down to 0.25 and turn off the sound. It makes them look much more like the real thing.
just got these plans :) you say build form door skin ply..not sure I can source that in the UK, have you got the thickness that would work (metric would be good) NOTE to self read plans...all sorted now :)
Great video and model, Gary! At 0:55 the camera is moving ahead of Emma, is it mounted on another boat model?
Yes, It's a mobius camera with pan/tilt and fav mounted on a schooner Irene, with gaff rig. We use a screen, and joystick on the transmitter with 2 spare channels for the pan/tilt servos. It's a handful to sail the boat at the same time as you film, but it's possible with some practice. you do have to stop filming once in a. while to make sure you're not about to run into the dock. When the boat you are filming turns, that's a cue.
Thanks Paul, Yes, that shot is from the FPV camera (Mobius) aboard my gaff rigged schooner "Irene".
How do you fix the boom to the mast?
Could I make the fin out of wood rather than aluminum?
Wondering how to adjust the sheets in .My one purchased her recently secondhand an I am going through checking everything. I need to replace rudder snapped off rudder at sale. today I went through checking the R/C servos an found by searching online your videos
For tech support, you can contact Gary thru the Bearospace website www.bearospaceindustries.com/boats2.html
Beautiful and simple. Only the rudder is remote controlled ?
Thank You Dimitris, actually, the sails are controllled also by a sail arm servo which pulls on the sheets.
We originally the rabbit popped out of the rabbit hole ran round the tree and went back down the hole. Lovely boat.
Como faço pra comprar 1 veleiro desse a controle remoto ?
Words cannot do this boat, or commentary justice.
QUESTION. Does the keel need to be so long?
Thanks Jim for asking about the keel length. I suggest that the keel be this long if your sailing pond is deep enough to allow it. If depth is a problem, the keel can be shortened 3 inches (7.5cm) with the same ballast, or even 6 inches (15cm) if an extra pound (.5kg) of lead is added.
Beautiful ship. I have a 1:90 h.m.s victory to build. How hard would it be to make her sail? Ive built wooden ships but never an rc one.
A static model (billing boats kit) is very hard to make watertight, and even harder to balast. To get something like that afloat, you'd probably end up building the hull, and use that to make a inverse "plug" that you use to build a fiberglass reinforced polyester hull having the same proportions. Then build the superstructure upon that polyester hull. After that the fun starts, because you have to control the rigging somehow. That will take some experimentation!
There are very little square rigged RC boats on youtube. The fact that there are examples out there at least means that it it is feasible. But you must not be in a hurry :)

Hello Garry,
Your videos are terrific. It's hard for me to choose one of your models. This is one of your favorites, but which one is really your favourite? I would look forward to an answer. Kind regards, Dirk SMC-Ahrensburg from Germany.
Gary, I've watched this video dozens of times and am on the fence about trying this build. I do NOT have a shop full of "bench" type power tools (saws, drill press, etc.). How practical is it to build this boat with hand tools only? I do have great patience so I would not rush the build. Also, how do you treat your boat hulls in general? Do you fiberglass the hulls, or use just a painting/ coating system of some sort? If you have a video on this, I haven't found it yet. Enjoy watching your videos , so relaxing to watch, great channel.
Thanks for bringing up the "build" topic. I built my Emmas with mostly hand tools. I did make use of a cordless drill and a hand held saber saw. The saber saw was used to cut the wooden mold for the lead ballast, and fitted with a metal cutting blade, was used to cut the aluminum fin keel. All other cutting can be done with hand saws. I fiberglass only the inside surfaces of the fin trunk and the rudder. The hull & deck I paint, inside and out, beginning with clear penetrating epoxy sealer (very thin epoxy) to seal the plywood.
@@sailtails2775 Gary, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. Great information and this makes it seem much more manageable for me.
What a lovely craft! So the only control needed to sail is the rudder? There is no winch on the main sheet? Very elegant. Does anybody sell this as a kit or completed? I would love to sail it but fear that I don't have the patience or skills needed to construct it.
There is sail control. A single sail arm servo sheets the main and jib together. 'Emma' is DIY, no kit or completed model is available.
nice boat ..i want to building
I've asked this on another of your videos. Why is the fin so long? Is it primarily for grip to windward? A simple tank test for stability would show it could be a lot shorter.
Thanks for asking about this Jonathan. Ultimate stability can be retained with a much shorter fin but heeling angle will be greater. I encourage folks to build the long fin if pond depth permits. I have discussed shortening the fin for 'Emma' in another video czcams.com/video/PnjECM_Kw4s/video.html
I did spend considerable effort "tank testing" in real life wind & waves of the Pacific Ocean, west coast of Mexico.
Check my response to your similar query on the 'Annie' video
I love the size of emma but prefer the design or irene. Do you think its possible to resize the 147cm plan size of irene to 100cm just like emma?
This is possible, though boats perform best at their designed size. See this video from a fellow who built his 'Irene' at 80% size.

I am sorry I did not buy an arm servo for the sail boat I am building. The winch is difficult to set up, the right length of string to use is hard to come at. An arm servo has no complication to it. I was dumb buying the winch.
If you install the winch such that it drives a loop of string on the inside of the boat, you can tie a jib and a mainsail sheet to that loop. The loop stays below deck (run it through a block in the bow of the boat).
Envisage the winch at the back of the boat, the loop running along the inside of the hull forward to the block in the bow, and back to the winch. So the loop leaves the winch, runs starboard side to the block, comes back port side to the winch. Now tie a string that acts as a sheet to that loop, and run it through a small hole in the centerline of the deck to your sail. Operate the winch, and notice that as the loop travels, it pulls in the sheet. Experiment to find the required length of travel in fully drawn and full slack.

I'm thinking about an Emma build using your plans. Can you please approximate the amount and thicknesses of plywood so I can estimate cost? Thanks very much.
Sure can Joe, Emma can be built with one half of a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood. In the US, I find 1/8" "utility ply" at Home Depot which is actually 2.7mm thick. Cheers !
@@sailtails2775 Great. Thank you for the info and the Home Depot availability tip. I thought I was going to be buying expensive hobby shop ply.
What a lovely boat and beautiful workmanship. Am i right to say that the long keel looks a bit out of place with this type of boat. It would have been nice to see a more appropriate keel installed. I stand to be corrected as i'm no expert in this field.
Thanks Kayak Malta, Indeed I agree that the long keel is out of place IF THIS WERE A FULL SIZE boat.
Physics demand the long fin in order to achieve satisfactory sailing performance on the smaller model.
sailtails , great thanks that makes sense

Ok, I think I ordered your plans, the site wasn’t very clear.
We received your order Matthew, Thank you ! When you make payment, Paypal notifies us of your order and your email address.
You should have received the PDFs by now, sent by email via Dropbox. Happy boat building !
Hi Gary. I have a challenge. Translate your documentation and plans in french in order to builg the RC sloop EMMA. I don't have a translation for traveler bitts. Are they pieces if woog, metal or rope that we hold in hand and use to move on board of a real boat ?
I'm a French sailor but beginner in RC.
@@philoulabroche2808 - Thanks for asking, but I have no idea how to translate that. The "traveler bitts" shown in the 'Emma' plans are pieces of wood which support the stainless steel wire "traveler. I made up the term "traveler bitts" for lack of any other name for them. So now that you know what they are, you can use the term amongst other boaters who will be quite impressed with your grasp of boatbuilding lingo ! Cheers !
@@sailtails2775 Hi, Gary. Thanks for your explanaitions. Now it's clear. Say hello to your Californian fleet and... ti your sea lions 💝
@@sailtails2775 I think in french langage, it's called " barre d'écoute". Sometime, " rail d'écoute ". Thanks again for your videos and the fact you speak slowly. It's better to understand and to read subtitles 😉. Bests regards.
@@sailtails2775 At the end of french translation, I'll send it to you.
Of course, I promise not to produce this translation to ithers in order to respect the right to property which is yours.
I don't understand the sail servo and it's use. Both sails can travel with the line attached to steel bars. What does the servi do to the line coming out of the deck to the sail?
Yes, the sails can travel side to side (self tacking). The servo pulls the line in, or lets it out, so you can control the angle of the sails relative to the boat.

Beautiful boat!
