kira did 2 things.. 1st showing that he kill someone when he is not watching TV.. makes L to be the one who witness his innocence and now killing someone when he is watching TV.. (which normally should make him look suspicious) doing it both will make L less suspicious of him because if he is too clean it will make people suspicious in a way.. that's why he still kill them after watching TV but he change the timing of killing abit after it.. the point here is kira still able to kill someone who is being shown on TV regardless on whether kira is watching it or not.. which make him look like just normal person unrelated to it.. is what kira thought of

People call Light a cool character but how on earth can you not agree that this move by L was one of the most badass moves in anime history. such a chad move. L was like : hehe what are you gonna do? kill me? lmao u mad bro?

That way it seems as if Kira switched to killing minor criminals in general. While if he doesn't, and they only died on that one day when L was watching while Light didnt have access to a TV, it would look weird right? The only time Kira killed minor criminals they just happened to create an alibi for Light.
Yes, and to add to this. When he didn't watch the TV it already served as an alibi. So it wouldn't look out of place if he watches TV to gather information now since he has his alibi to fall back on. If anything it would look out of place if he never watches the TV and people keep dying. L might end up drawing an incorrect conclusion that Kira can somehow watch tv within his mind or something. Wouldn't be too weird of a power in a world where someone can kill with just a name and a face.
Exactly. I think he is also not wanting to look too innocent. It could be suspicious if Light never watches TV, or if criminals he definitely saw are the only ones not getting killed. To generate an appearance of being innocent, he needs something that could be seen as just a coincidence.
Also, he didn't kill all the minor criminals that show up on tv, he remembers their face and name, and kills them at a random time when he goes out to prevent L from thinking all the criminals he saw die soon after
I guess the one thing that does make me wonder about his method a little, is that Light told Ryuk that he had been preparing instructions for criminal deaths months in advance. Light said it was in case he ever had to go to the hospital or ended up cut off from the note or from information in some other way, and the idea was that, if he had instructions for these criminals to die on a schedule for several month out, then it'd obscure a sudden lack of activity from him in the present, if he was ever incapacitated.
so to me, it almost seems like Light could've fallen back on this while the bugs and cameras were installed. criminals would keep dying while he's being observed, in a consistent pattern, and he wouldn't have to risk doing anything on camera at all. maybe he felt the need to respond to daily news reports, so it wouldn't seem like Kira was being kept from responding to current events? but to me it seems way more suspicious if Kira never kills minor criminals, then suddenly starts as soon as these two families are put under observation. it actually breaks the pattern, and is overall way more noticeable.
I will say that watching some TV while he's at home makes sense for Light, but he should also be using his time out of the house to try and subtly gather information in some way. and because he can schedule deaths, he could literally set it up so that people die while he's, say, having dinner or something, and seems like he's none the wiser.
but then... that's not even to speak of the degradation of his morals, where the fact that these were minor criminals doesn't even phase him now. like, a purse snatcher isn't an evil person... they're probably just poor. but Light needs to cover his tracks, so instead of being perturbed by the way his blind killings misfired, he doubles down and decides to kill more people who only committed minor offenses, just to make those first two seem unremarkable. if it wasn't obvious before, it should be by now... Light is not concerned with justice.

I absolutely love the small detail that Light brings up, where if he were to write L's alias into the Death Note, he might accidentally kill the real Hideki Ryuga(the actor in the show). He literally covered all bases.
There's actually absolutely no way L could know that Kira could accidentally kill the idol while attempting to kill him... Which means he took that alias on a hunch, that it MIGHT serve him SOMEHOW, and it did.
'I'm L' has the same energy as 'I'm armored titan' scene, out of nowhere lol

It's a good plan because it would be more suspicious if Light kept himself cut off from the media while being watched, almost telling them that he knows he's being watched.
When that shinigami said he was going to peek on Ryuk and see what kind of human was keeping him, he just meant he was going to go to the edge of the rift between words that Ryuk jumped off of and watch the human world from there. Shinigami can look into the human world without entering it, but they are so lethargic and slothful that they usually don’t bother, even though they are so bored every day.
what he said. just imagine it like a pond where the reflection is the human world.. just that that pond is an almost endless hole in the floor.

I find the scene with L in the exam scene so funny. Because he's looking for a serial killer, but let's all be honest for a second. If you saw someone that looks like L and was acting like he was during that exam, and you look back at him and he suddenly just looks at you dead in the eyes... You would think he's a serial killer! 🤣🤣🤣
It is actually the opposite in reality. Serial killers often look like everyone else. It is the "weird" looking people that everyone pays attention to for no reason other than looking different from expected norms.

@@colt1903 If I were a serial killer, I would prefer to act and look like everyone else and blend in... Too many suspects to look into. There are fewer people that look or act differently, so easier to detect and easier to catch a witnesses attention.
When Light said he can't make someone kill someone else-if you look at what he said right before that line, "The Death Note can only kill a person whose name I write in it." Since he doesn't have L's name, he cannot arrange for someone else to kill him using the Death Note. So what he really meant here was that he cannot make someone kill someone whose name he doesn't know, using the death note.
Makes me wonder, what would happen if Kira, for example, murders all pilots on an airliner 10km in the air... Every employee and passenger whose life wasn't supposed to end thins day should survive somehow, is that right?
There's also the problem of that it wouldn't work if the person he's controlling doesn't know who the target is.

IF that would be possible, considering a death note could have been dropped in like.. Medieval ages.. then its an interesting theory to think about if something like the plague was actually.. well.. just a chain reaction set of by some instructions in a strange book.

I always just thought that there are supposed to be words written on it and they just didn't put them in while animating to save costs and everything because then they wouldn't have to make up and write a whole speech.
@@sydneypeck2488 I too thought that the first time I watched it but rewatching it Light's paper had words on it while L didn't I don't think reusing the same words from Light's paper is that hard after all L says the same speech. This is one of the best episodes of the whole show. This is where the mindgames truly begin
Criminals die when he isn’t watching tv. Criminals die when he is watching tv. Criminals die when he is at home. Criminals die when he is out walking around. He thinks his countermeasure is perfect because there is no pattern for L to latch onto even if he is observing everything.
L really got him trapped because like Light was saying when he got back home in anger basically only Light knows that "he is L" so doesn't matter even if he tries to get someone else to "kill L" it would just prove that it was Light who did it. I just absolutely love this part in this because even though they know who each other is neither of them will be able to do anything specifically Light can't unless he can get "L''s real name". So the mystery continues on and so does this cat & mouse game. It is going to be interesting how things proceed further.
I just wanna say... having two degrees in law is very impressive! I myself dropped out of college due to stress, so I really felt that bit about the tests. once I started working, I always thought working a job was _way_ easier than school, because at least when you're doing your job, you only have to do the one thing that you're used to doing, over and over... the longer you work in a position, the more comfortable you'll be, and the less new things you'll even need to learn. the skills you use every day are literally practiced so frequently that you become skilled at it naturally.
after a certain point, from the student's perspective, you can really forget that tests are supposed to show the teacher what the student's level of comprehension is... the consequences of failing are usually so steep that, if you lack knowledge, you'll do anything to hide it. tests end up not being that accurate a show of proficiency at all that way. and especially when the results are used as a type of credentials, it really puts the pressure on, because even if you know your stuff really well, the test might not end up showing that accurately. that really was always the worst part of school.
EDIT: also, Japanese is a language that constructs words from syllables... so a good way to know how to pronounce any Japanese word relatively accurately, is to know how each syllable is pronounced. and the syllables are actually fairly straightforward, even if some words string them together in long chains.
so the thing that Ryuk is, is a Shinigami. the syllables are SHI, NI, GA, and MI. if you know how to pronounce each one, you can string them together... SHI- NI- GA- MI.
there are a couple of exceptions, but generally speaking, most Japanese syllables will be a consonant sound and a vowel sound.
the vowel sounds are pronounced the same way every time...
A is always ah, as in "spa" not aa as in "apple".
E is always an ey sound, like, rhymes with "may" or "say".
U is always oo, as in "food".
I is always an ee sound, as in, rhymes with "me" or "see".
O is always oh, as in rhyming with "go".
so a consonant can be paired with each vowel to make one set of syllables, like Ka Ke Ku Ki Ko, or Ga Ge Gu Gi Go... and so on and so forth. of course, these make more sense in context... like, Light's last name... YA- GA- MI, with Y treated as a consonant. three syllables. this rule isn't 100% comprehensive, but it should make at least a little more sense of it.
if you wanted to investigate any further, you can google up a Japanese syllable chart, just to get an idea of what sounds exist in the language.

The Japanese arrange their vowels in AIUEO order.
Apples are used to represent the fruit of knowledge and also the original sin. I think their prominence is just a cheeky homage or reference to that, considering the themes of the story.
FMA for sure is a good next show I think. Glad you're enjoying this - I've been greatly enjoying seeing new episodes because I never got around to watching this and never found the motivation to watch it on my own - so now I get to reexperience the plot, while seeing you experience it for the first time! Win win! (I've read the manga fully and it's a great ride)

@Gg Ez I lean towards not recommending incomplete series to newbies. Bridging genres also allows us to gauge his interests in the new genre he's exposed to and tailor future suggestions, while giving him something we know he'll enjoy. That's the general logic I go by when introducing people to things anyway.
@Gg Ez It sounds like you're just pushing what you want him to watch instead of tailoring recommendations for him. When you recommend something to someone you should base it on what you know of their preferences, not on your own.
L's Plan looks really crazy and it _is_ defnitly risky, but for the reasons light just exposited, at least for the time being, he is untouchable. Now if Light had the eyes, things would be a bit different. All he would have to do is Wait and then kill L after a suitable amount of time has passed from when he first met L. But since he does _not_ have the eyes, he is absolutely stuck

About how old is L, it's not stated in the show but in these civic exams, at least in my country, there is no upper limit in age for applying as an examinee. I've legit seen men and women with greying hair sitting in the same exam hall as me.
The rules can get a bit funky at times and there's some loop holes that can possibly be exploited, but there are some that specifically prevent people whose names are written down causing the deaths of others.
I believe you *can* get someone to murder someone else, but you would have to enter both names in the death note as separate entries for it to work, having one person get shot at say, 9pm in an alleyway, and then controlling someone else to shoot them and then off themselves. But you can't get someone to go crazy and start killing everyone around them randomly before jumping in front of a bus or something, at least not as a single entry.
Judging from that scenario you wrote, I'm assuming you have also watched the first Death Note movie. I must say I really enjoyed seeing new ways to use the Death Note that weren't in the anime.
Fun fact, I'm a young researcher and uni teacher and I was marking my students on a black diary because my laptop had no battery and I forgot the charger. And one of my students told another one "imagine it's his deathnote" I said "I heard you and nooo it's not a deathnote don't worry... by the way do you have an apple for my shinigami?" And all the students who got the reference laughed 🤣🤣🤣 imagine your teacher having a real deathnote I would be scared af omg
These students are nice, they always get all pop culture references I put in my course. Well I'm not much older (only 3-4 years) than them so I guess that's normal but that's also fun!
The thought process behind Light’s plan is to lessen his suspicion. If for even a moment L thinks Light realized he was being watched and ended up only killing petty criminals instead of the usual hardened criminals that would take a bit more research to find then that would make the probability of Light being Kira grow. But by killing those petty criminals while both receiving and not receiving that information it just looks like Kira is targeting those who think their crimes aren’t important enough rather than Light simply trying to avoid suspicion
For the thing about Light killing minor criminals to avoid suspicion... If minor criminals only die when he's not watching TV and never when he is, that's a pattern. "He's watching TV again, and only minor criminals are dying again, that's a pattern, which means he's up to something" - L.
To avoid that, if he's gonna kill minor criminals anyway because of the potato chip trick, they'll have to die even when he has access to TV
If Light was correct in his assumption on why L chose such a famous pseudonym (and he probably was), it would show clearly that L is also quite a psychopath who is willing to throw the life of a random innocent under the bus in order to catch Kira.
Actually, the exam thing is not about memorising important details for your work, it's to test your brain performance to be acceptable for the job. But still I agree with you on your hate on exam. The atmosphere there was a mix of heavy pressure and sleepy feeling 😅

As far as apples goes, there is a lot of very shallow Christian mythos spread throughout this series. It's pretty popular to do stuff like that because it adds a layer of depth to the series for certain fans who appreciate that type of stuff. Also some authors just like it. It's usually half hearted, but in this series it's actually quite decently pulled off.
In Christian mythos apples are said to be or to closely resemble the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. Eating this fruit is what brought death into the world. So a god of death or reaper, would in turn enjoy apples. They would also enjoy a game of wits between good and evil.
Even Lights name has a lot of symbolism behind it, but I'm not getting into all of the symbolism here, just figured I'd mention the apple thing.
It was a previous rule. A target cannot be the cause of another's death. If it results in collateral damage, the target just dies of a heart attack.
Exams still have a fuction, but they shouldn't be the main factor to determinate whether or not someone has the abilities to excel at work.
Actually I believe he can control someone to kill someone else, IF he has the name and face to be able to kill that person anyway. But if he writes "At [time], [criminals full name] will kill L before taking his own life" the most likely outcome is that the criminal just dies of a heart attack. Because to kill someone with the notebook always requires a name and a face. "L" is meaningless to the deathnote.
I could see a way around the limitation of not being able to get someone else to kill he target by having both individuals' names and faces and killing both of them simultaneously by having them shoot or stab (or whatever) each other. The Death Note does use other people already when there is an accident, as in a car running over someone... the car is being driven by someone obviously... so other people can be involved in special circumstances, but not if Light just indicated that a victim dies by being shot by say a police officer. It could not work that way normally because the Death Note has no control over people not specified for death in its pages.

writing in the death note "X kills Y" should work if you wrote "Y gets killed" or "Y gets killed by X" as well, but if you wrote "X kills lots of people" or "X causes a populated building to collapse" then he's just gonna die of a heart attack cuz the death note wont kill anyone who's name wasn't written in it
Which begs the question: what if all the pilots of a plane were kill in mid air? Since their names were written on the note, they absolutely would die, but then the plane would crash…? The other passengers aren't written, but how will they survive?
Also not related to my previous comment, but I think just writing "X kills Y" would work as well, since Y's name is written as well. (Of course you need to know Y's true name and face in the first place.)

5:01 He established to L that minor criminals died while he wasn't watching TV, if he establishes a pattern of not watching TV, so he wants to keep things, coincidental, normal and random. Conincindental coz there are other families being investigated that watches TV too and he don't want to establish a pattern that criminals die while he wasn't watching TV. Normal coz normally at some point people will want to watch news. With the Kira spree ongoing, he wants to show L that he is concerned about it by thus, watching the news. Random coz, he avoids L discovering a pattern on how he can kill and eventually leading to L finding out he's Kira.

23:00 actually the rule is "you can only shorten the life of people that have their names written, you cannot shorten someone else.
I mean, "X makes an explosion that kill X and Y", If you write it this way it could work because you wrote both names "X" and "Y"
but if you write "X makes explode a bomb on the street", if the explosion was about to kill anyone else, then it won't happend and X will just have a heart attack.
That's also why in ep 4 in the bus, Light said "it"s all right, no matter what happends, it's impossible that this criminal use his gun against us".
Jokes aside, I’m studying to be a lawyer. As much as I hate to admit, I believe exams are needed as an evaluation for people as a minimum requirement. Some people go to college without really studying anything, so what if they become a doctor and caused harm to other people because of their lack of knowledge…
I think changes are necessary for exams, but get rid of them might not be a wise decision imo.

The best strategy is to tell a lie that is partially true. I would ask L straight out if he suspects me. And I would assume that he is, because of father's involvement in Kira's case (actually, dad told that himself), psychological profile in father's database, and the fact that someone followed him a few weeks ago (an FBI agent). It's a suspicious coincidence that L meets Light and tells him everything just because of his help in some cases. And I would say that I approve of Kira's goal, but his methods are unforgivable. It's mostly true, with a lie in the most important part. And that's not a spoiler, because I don't remember what will happen next.
2 degrees in law is very impressive but you seem smart and analytical so it's not too surprising lol but yes this is one of the crazier episodes and things are really going to ramp up from here on.

It would be weird if at the exact time L starts cheking in on Light kira changes patterns ONLY at that very moment... so if he keeps killing low tier criminals it won't look like their surveillance was the motive... Also it would be weird if that happened ONLY at the moment he is being observed and he almost looks like he is going out of the way to avoid watching TV... so if he does see some and doesn't see other criminals who died then there will not be a pattern to be suspicious of... too clean can be suspicious too so he "dirtied" his own behaviour by giving himself a couple of AVERAGE suspicions...

Your exam comment is very true. I studied law at a very good UK University and it's exactly as you say; it was cram as much in, spew it out onto the answer sheet and then forget it. Which does train short term memory but little else. In all my years of being a lawyer I don't think I learned much if anything on the academic side that was of practical use in my job.
Regarding Light killing minor criminals he watched on TV - his reasoning was that if minor criminals only suddenly died when he was acting super innocent (while using the crisp packet trick) it might look odd so he decided to kill them on other days too. As he'd already killed without apparently seeing the criminals he no longer needed to prove that aspect, and he wanted to show minor criminals would die regardless of how innocent he acted. Ideally he'd have done this before and after the trick, so that the sudden killing of minor criminals didn't stand out at all but of course he was under pressure from the surveillance and was also hoping the news would show more serious criminals when doing the potato chip trick.

Though exams are not perfect... as of right now they are still one of the best ways not to actually "test" or "measure" your knowledge on the topic... but to force the students to prepare for it and learn during that preparation process not only what will be in the exam but the rest that didn't... you learn how to look up information, how to process it and understand it during your study sessions, not to mention that THAT preparation does help to not exactly memorize everything but leave a way bigger impresion so that your brain makes connections that facilitate memory later... though it still needs the student to care to learn the right way... there are lots of ways to "cheat" the system by finding workarounds...

It’s really interesting to see somebody revisiting this series from the era of 2006, those were the days of emo and nu metal music/fashion. A lot of the aesthetic for L and Ryuk (and Misa) are reminiscent of those alt kids in high school who shopped at Hot Topic when they mostly sold goth raver stuff. In 2023 it looks like a completely forgotten era but sometimes it feels like yesterday for me

You know, I actually agree with that. Thing is, the whole practice of memorizing things for a test has always been a flawed way to teach people anything, unless they have a photographic memory or something and they just remember everything with ease.

So at the start when you were confused: Light successfully killed inmates while he had no access to the news and their names. However if kira kept killing minor criminals through the potato chip trick and Light never watched the TV at ALL that would almost be more suspicious. So to negate suspicions Light watched TV and saw the criminals' names but had Kira still kill minor crimnals and even went out of his way to shake up the times and make it a bit more sporadic as well. If you're ever confused i recommend just rewinding by a minute or two, the show is normally pretty thorough w/ its explanations 👍🏾

there's a bit of a joke about this scene in the community where L says "I'm L." In Romanji it is "watashi wa eru desu" which is literally "I am L" but it kind of sounds like he's saying "watashi wa ero desu" which translates to "I am perverted"
If you’re gonna watch FMA you need to understand that there’s 2 FMA. The first was made with the author to the point where they caught up to the og story so the author gave his blessing for the writers of the show to make their own ending. Then FMA brotherhood came out a few years after the first by the same people and they kinda sped through the stuff they already covered. It’s still good and has the manga’s ending.
My recommendation is that if you only want to watch the story one time is to watch the first 6 or so episodes of the og FMA anime for the better start then switch over to FMA brotherhood to get the manga’s ending. If you have the time and don’t mind, then watch both as I honestly think bother hold up pretty well on their own

I'm watching this series for the first time myself, I'm about five episodes ahead of the CZcams reactions. It seems like Light's caught walking the line between trying to give himself alibis that prove he can't be involved, without creating a pattern that looks like he's intentionally trying to cover himself.

I think they said it already but if the cause of death written in the death note causes another persons deaths then the cause will not be executed instead the victim will just die from a heart attack, Light can't make someone kill L even if that person actually wants or has thought about killing him.
Something that is kind of interesting about this is that someone having a heart attack could theoretically cause other people's deaths so would the death note work in that case? I heart someone else give the example of a flight and using the death note to kill the pilot, copilot, and anyone else on board who knows how to fly a plane. If everyone who can fly the plane dies of a heart attack while the plane is in the sky, the plane would inevitably crash and everyone on board would die even if their name's weren't written in the death note, so would it still work?

I think that Light is saying it would be suspicious for those minor criminals to have died (when he had the little TV in the chips bag) and for minor criminals after that to stop being killed as fast, at least that's what I think
What light meant when he said death note could not be used to kill a 3rd person,
is that he can't write someone's name in the death note and make that person kill a specific person without knowing and writing their name in the death note too.
When he tried to kill penber, light already tried to make criminals draw L's face and write a letter mentioning L before they died, but these two failed since the criminals don't have anything to do with L, so something like writing letters to L would never pop up in their mind suddenly.
