  • Hey everyone,
    Well, after countless messages and comments requesting I make a video for this hack, I've finally gotten around to it after losing my voice for a good few weeks.
    The top zipper hack for Lindsay's Dayna Pack. A Fanny Pack in the USA or we call them Bum Bags here in Australia. Such a cute little pattern. Nice and quick to assemble too. This hack adds another pocket for extra storage. I've also made a change to the connectors which I explain in the video so double check your hardware depending on your strap preference.
    The pattern can be found here at Linds Handmade
    lindshandmade.com/products/da...
    Pattern piece changes...
    -- You will need to cut 2 lining pieces from the 'Back Main Panel'
    -- Don't cut the 'Front Top Panel Liner'. Instead cut your liner from the 'Front Top Panel Exterior' piece which is 1/4" taller
    -- Add 1/4" to the top of the 'Back Liner' piece (see edit below)
    -- Scrap for zipper tabs (at least 1 1/4" wide by about 5")
    I hope you like my video. Let me know what you think.
    Xx
    Ebony
    EDIT :
    A few people are having trouble getting the back liner piece to match up. I have no trouble at all but when I reviewed my pattern pieces, I can see that the Back Liner piece could probably be 1/4" taller. I have added this alteration to the description of pattern pieces changes above. It still works out fine for me without the extra 1/4", so I didn't pick up on it until a few people commented so I do apologise.
    However, some people are noting that they are much more than 1/4" off. Because the bottom is darted, you don't want to push it down flat. In the video at 7:40 you can see that mine doesn't match either to start with but if you clip the top and bottom like I did the base should curve up to meet the lining. That helps create the shape in the pocket. The liner is smaller so that it the front piece curves up. Don't worry about any difference until you've clipped it like shown in the video.
    If it is still not matching, it could be the SA used for the zip and the darts. Both can make the exterior piece longer if your SA is too small.
    I hope this helps anyone having trouble.

      Thanks KimberlyAnn. I figure most people are there for the "how to assemble" part and know how to use a machine. So I don't want to make the video any longer than it has to be. I prefer shorter, to the point videos myself so I try to create them that way too. Glad you enjoyed. 😊

    Thank you 😍 I hadn't tried the Dayna bc it was only the front zip, but having this top zip makes the bag far.more useful for me.

      Sorry Mary. I sometimes forget to mention them but yes all seam allowances are in the written pattern. I used 1/4" for the top zipper and I think most of them are 1/4" anyway.

    When I first bought this pattern on line I assumed there was a top zipper that just was not visible and was surprised that there was not. Thanks so much for this hack. Wouldn't you have to make the lining back - the one that is part of the original pattern - taller - if you made the top lining the same size as the top outer when you make the original outside zipper? That lining piece matches up with the shorter top part, you know what I mean? I would think the linking piece would be 1/4 inch too short.

    • @whatastitchup.creations
      @whatastitchup.creations  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Dawn, if you expand the description box there is an edit for that little measurement and all the pieces listed to cut. Sorry I couldn't update the video, maybe one day I will do a new one and make a few changes.

  • @IrinasBerninas
    @IrinasBerninas Před rokem

    Thanks! I see that it looks a bit tricky where you fit the webbing in close to the zippers. Would it be a good idea to cut those top corners a little wider to allow more room for the 1" webbing

    • @whatastitchup.creations
      @whatastitchup.creations  Před rokem +2

      Absolutely. You could add 1/4" to the top of the top front, top front lining, back and 2 lining back pieces to account for the SA of adding the top zipper. Or alternatively, reduce the size of your strap connectors to 3/4" with slightly smaller D rings.

    • @whatastitchup.creations
      @whatastitchup.creations  Před rokem

      I personally haven't but lots of others have definitely made all vinyl exteriors. There isn't really any super thick sections so it shouldn't be too tricky. Good luck.

    • @whatastitchup.creations
      @whatastitchup.creations  Před rokem

      There isn't a separate pattern. It's a Hack of the original. So you need to use the pattern pieces from the original and modify them or cut extra pieces as required in the video. Hope that helps.

    • @ispops87
      @ispops87 Před rokem

      @@whatastitchup.creations So the same pieces that I used for the normal part are the same ones that I'm going to use for the second part that is above because it's for the double zipper, right? How much more measure did you use sideways or upwards?

    • @whatastitchup.creations
      @whatastitchup.creations  Před rokem +1

      The 2 extra lining pieces are the same as the back exterior piece. The top front lining piece is cut the same as the top front exterior piece instead as it's a 1/4" taller. The only other bit to cut taller is the lining for the back of the front pocket. It should be 1/4" taller.

      Haha I know it sounds funny but if you google it you'll get a picture. It's a little wedge tool that you put under the front or back of your foot as you sew when the height of what you are sewing changes. So you can keep the pressure consistant on the low bit as your foot wouldn't be touching it.
