    I have just completed my first 50 plus mile bike ride and I’m over the moon. I suffer from COPD, self inflicted btw; I was a heavy smoker but had to quit. I took up bike riding during the pandemic and fell in love with it. I have converted to a road bike and I’m not going back. I use a heart rate monitor on the majority of my rides when I remember it. I’m thinking about investing in a power meter to see what way it can improve my overall performance. My 54 mile ride was done in a moving time of 4 hours and 12 minutes. My VO2 max is pathetic 34 and I would do anything to improve it. On my recovery rides I try to include a few short, sharp but steep hills especially after a long ride and ensure I ride at least 20-25 miles in my recovery rides or else I think they are a waste of time. No more canals for me. I have also recently switched to SPD pedals, I did try the road pedals but they are too tricky for me. Clipless has improved my speed and climbing abilities. I even use clipless on my hybrid for commuting.

    I like to use total Kj to help me understand the demands of a course and in training if I am near the fitness level to meet that demand. ie: if race takes 3500 kj, have I done a 3500 Kj ride in training lately etc.

    You can do all this for free with Golden Cheetah. I prefer it to Training Peaks/WKO.

      Quite agree. Golden Cheetah does all this for free and perfectly adequately for most cyclists' purposes. Plus it is being continuously developed by a dedicated band of supporters.

      Is there Garmin Connect or Strava integration for GC? I've been fiddling with it lately but it seems like you need to manually download each activity and then import it into GC. Something automatic would be neat.

      Unfortunately not with Garmin Connect. I plug my Garmin in and manually sync.

    #torqueback so if I do a 20 min max session to test my FTP out on the road do I go with my actual average or my normalised power? I don't have uninterrupted roads so the two are often quite far apart

    Is there quality evidence indicating what power curve shape ( ie stomping vs circling vs pulling up or some combination) is more efficient from a metabolic/physiologic standpoint? Other than in an expensive cardiopulmonary testing lab, it seems the only metric that we can easily measure is HR while generating the same force/speed, maintaining the same cadence for some fixed duration while trying different pedaling stroke shapes. Generating a given power at the lowest metabolic cost ( ie energy required by by the body to produce the power) would seem to be the object of all this pedaling data. Is there such evidence available and is there a metric riders can use? Chris F

    I almost exclusively use WKO (from trainingpeaks too). More numbers and graphs but I feel like it is easier to see progress and analyze your workout.

    Most of this data is on Strava or the Garmin. Strava has this "Suffer Score" - is that equivalent to the TP/Garmin TSS??
    Btw - slightly off topic - I find the banding of suggested power outputs in the Zwift interval workouts a bit low despite having my FTP set there. Does anyone else find this? (Maybe my FTP is actually higher and I just didn't try hard enough during the test!)

    Not everyone has access to power metrics. Wish you added other metrics, like the cheaper heart rate metrics, with in combination with the other basic metrics.

      Si is still very fit. I think in some video they said that when he rode the Ronde Van Vlaanderen, he came in at 2nd or 3th place overall on Strava.

    All this stuff is so complicated, it's putting me off from getting a power meter. That and the price too ...although the price is probably the number 1 reason !

      [Gary Jockstrap] It all depends on what your cycling objectives are. There is plenty of documentation on the web to help understand how to use power data and this video did a pretty good job of explaining the basics. Once you have some software like Golden Cheetah or Training Peaks and some data it is much easier to understand. I am just a recreational cyclist who does the occasional sportive and I find riding using power data helps me get to the right level of fitness.

      Yeah. It's so complicated... if you are amoeba. Because if you are intelligent person you can understand it all in less than 30 minutes. This knowledge may also be useful for understanding training and its principles even if you don't have power meter. Just make a little effort.

      You won't benefit from dual side, as long as u use dual or single an all of your bikes

      +keasone But you don't need dual to measure any of the five things in the vid... I'm looking at getting the Bepro pedals from favero. €750 for dual side and €500 for single. I'm not a pro, and looking at this it seems like the single might be enough, I'm just worried that I might miss out on something if I do end up getting the single...

      pretty simple - stick to single sided on all of your bikes, OR stick to dual sided on all of you bikes.
      If you mix, you won't get the same readings due so possible leg-imbalances.

      Yes, a bit of irony, but seriously, what techniques did the pros of old use? I'm sure they had some data while training, but long ago before Matt's time there were no head units, other than the one on top of your shoulders.

      Power meters are not cheap, and GCN have stated in the past that loads of money was not needed to improve cycling fitness. Perhaps that's a future #torqueback or a new video in need of production. If we don't have power meters, or even a heart monitor giving us instant feedback, how can we train to numbers? Can speed data over an often used course help us improve?

      I have a friend who doesn't use power or HR and he's got so much better than me just through riding more. I know that's not much help but it's more than you've been given so far. I will ask him what he does if you like

      average, you only use normalised to get an ftp if the ride is over 1 hr
