  • One of a group of unaccompanied motets by Bruckner (the most famous being Locus iste) Os justi is a little gem, unfolding gradually over 5 minutes of sweeping dynamics and delicious suspensions.
Recorded in St Augustine, Kilburn by kind permission of the Vicar & Churchwardens.
Sopranos: Fiona Fraser, Hannah King, Victoria Meteyard, Josephine Stephenson, Katie Trethewey, Emma Walshe
Altos: Hannah Cooke, Martha McLorinan, Eleanor Minney, Elisabeth Paul
Tenors: Jeremy Budd, Nicholas Madden, Nicholas Todd, Toby Ward
Basses: Joseph Edwards, William Gaunt, Andrew Mahon, Owain Park, Simon Whiteley
    Produced by Jonathan Coates.
    安东·布鲁克纳(Anton Bruckner)-奥斯蒂(Os justi)-特内布雷(Tenebrae),由奈杰尔·肖特(Nigel Short)指挥

Imagine this song back in the day. People with no way to record music and only hearing this after travelling many miles just to hear this. They must have revered these singers as just short of angels. Truly magnificent!

Mozart transcribed Miserere Mei, Deus by memory after only hearing it twice. He then sent his manuscript to an English publisher. At the time, private ownership of that piece was banned by the church. His publication forced the church to lift the ban.
Imagine that, though. Only hearing the piece twice, and being able to jot it down perfectly.

A better word: they are gifted by God with vocal perfection, just as Bruckner was gifted by God to compose. Gifts of all kinds, some used, some ignored, some using their gifts yet never thanking God.
It is always wonderful to hear the results of these gifts come together in works of art.

In 1982, my university choir stood in the spot at St. Florian where Bruckner first directed his choir in this work. We then went into the catacombs below the monastery and stood around Bruckner's casket, with all the skulls of priests lining the wall and sang it again. I cried as I listened to this for the first time. Blessings to you all.

Having spent twenty minutes viewing postings from the USA - all of them bearing witness to the sheer lunacy of the views upheld by a significant proportion of the populace; and having, thereby, become increasingly depressed with the state of mankind, I have accidentally landed on this performance of sheer beauty and perfection; a flickering candle of hope in a mad world which seems to have lost its bearings. Where all that is brash threatens to annihilate the delicate, the fragile and the supremely beautiful. I thank you for this, and all your postings on ‘utube’; which, one might tentatively hope, will bring about a wider appreciation of this genre, and in so doing, enrich the lives of those who are fortunate enough to make the discovery. Long may you prosper in your noble work.

Not knowing where we come from, not knowing where we are going, conscience, a soul, back in the day these voices, these vocal works, the very churches they sang in gave people something tangible and they believed in the Almighty and the fleeting beauty of life and the promise of eternal.

Absolute perfection. Such beauty from what I think is the best choir I've ever heard. After many years of trying I finally managed to see Tenebrae perform live in Sion last weekend. It was a dream come true, and far exceeded every expectation I could have had. Swiss audiences are knowledgeable but very self-contained. They rarely get swept away, however good the performance, but at the end there wasn't a person still seated and I wasn't the only person using a handkerchief to dry my eyes. What an experience. Thank you so much, Tenebrae and Nigel Short.
